I realize its barely JC and may seem like a crackpot idea, but here it goes....Ive always thought that Joni had an influence on the "Johnny Bravo" episode. In an early scene in that show Greg was shown playing/singing in the boys room (with the groovy bunk beds). I think sometimes the minutiae of what goes on on the Jonifest list could be a bit much for people that aren't planning to go. Sometimes it's about schedules and people joining up and meeting on the way to and fro, sharing rides, doing songs together and all that. That could be a bit much on this list, esp. as you get closer to the date. On the other hand, trying to talk up fest on the fest list is preaching to the converted. Sometimes you can hear people laughing at the ends of tracks because they left the tape rolling and decided to leave that part in, because it's kind of cute. Tehre's a couple of tracks on Patty Griffin's "Thousands kisses" CD like that (but I can't think of which ones right now - sounds kind of odd the first time you hear it, but adds this home-recording, backporch kind of feel to the song and gives you a tiny glimpse of the real people recording the songs). I've never noticed any hiss/pop on the Joni thing, but then, I wouldn't, or my brain would just edit it out. It's entirely possible they just couldn't remove it. Or decided to leave it, because it's authentic. Or they were sloppy. Look at the typos and mistakes in some of the printed lyrics in some of the Joni lyrics in music books, that stay there even when reprints are done. People are lazy, and editing (of the copy-editing variety) is a boring job, where attention drifts far too easily and the same mistake is missed over and over again. (Now on coffee #4, or is it 5? The woman who broke Rosalita's little heart seems to have won the heart of this reviewer. I am intrigued by this. Anyone heard any of it yet? - --Smurf 23rd Street Lullaby [Columbia] "Love, be my cure/Be my medecine/simple and pure," sings Patti Scialfa midway through "Love (Stand Up)," the centerpiece of her remarkable sophomore solo effort, "23rd Street Lullaby." It's fitting, for "Lullaby" is marked by an unassuming purity and is touched throughout by grace. Yes, she's got a husband who casts a rather formidable shadow, but Scialfa was a musician years before becoming backround vocalist with the E Street Band and eventually marrying Bruce Springsteen. "Lullaby" is, on the surface at least, a fond look back at the days Scialfa spent busking in New York City, hustling day gigs to pay the rent and hanging on to seemingly unreachable dreams. Look deeper, though, and you'll find a record that seeks to reconcile one's present with one's past; it's about taking stock of love and loss and letting go. Musically, Scialfa blends idioms with a master's stroke. There are elements of the work of Rickie Lee Jones, Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris here, but they are filtered through a melodic sensibility that owes more to gospel and R&B than it does to country or rock. With producer/drummer/mulit-instrumentalist Steve Jordan and a cast of seasoned pros, including guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits), Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan) and Nils Lofgren (E Street Band), Scialfa constructs elegant little symphonies to support her gorgeous, vibrato-laden vocals and rich harmonies. "City Boys" is a sultry blues-country romp; "You Can't Go Back" a clear-eyed reckoning set to a beautifully arranged blend of post-Motown pop. "Each Other's Medecine" is a folk-country shuffle with an aching chorus. And in "Love (Stand Up)," Scialfa has penned a glorious gem, a love song both sexy and deeply spiritual, a paean to the transcendence that can be offered by a relationship f ounded on faith, hope and love. Soul-stirring, and well worth your time. - - Jeff Miers "I DON'T. Buy the tomatoes with. The stems. On them. They don't. Degrade. They go. Down the sink. And into the WATER. Then. As for the restaurant, that would be the Daily Grill on San Vincente Blvd in LA (my company's LA office is maybe two blocks from there and I'm dying to find a reason to be sent there so I can hang out at the Daily Grill every day until I see Joni). > Has anyone ever met her? What's she like in person? Kakki (from LA) and Stephen (from Vancouver, BC) ran into Joni at the Daily Grill a few years ago ... here's the first post from that occasion. Lordy, lordy. JMDL'er Stephen from Vancouver is here in L.A. on business this weekend and I've been showing him around. We were going to have lunch in Topanga Canyon, but then he mentioned a friend he'd like to see who has a business in the mall where the Daily Grill is located so we decided that would be a good choice and Joni-related, of course. We sat with our food, drinks and smokes in the hot sun having a lazy afternoon when my God, who should appear!! I have so much to tell, but it is a bit difficult as you can imagine! We left her alone but she has a new little yappy Jack Russell terrier dog she'd brought who was quite the center of attention. (Oh and yes, the cats are all getting along with Coco, and even though they have their skirmishes, she said they sleep together every night ;-) I was telling Stephen about a dog I had like that and Joni heard me and wanted to know about it so we had the opening for conversation. Well, lots of drinks and smokes later turned into our own chat with Joni for about an hour. Phenomenal, phenomenal. I'll give the short version for now with news of what matters probably to most of you. The "war:" has affected her very much and she has done three paintings since 9/11. The paintings are going to be featured in the L.A. Times next week. I don't want to share her views here yet because it seems more proper to see what is said in the L.A. Times. I will tell you that while talking with her about why she doesn't write anymore - she said she has not been able to - but this event is very definitely inspiring her to write again. I may have more to write later - right now I'm still in a little shock!! ;-) Kakki NP: For The Roses album - --- > I have also heard that she spends a lot of time painting. Yes, you could say that. (I am a lonely painter / I live in a box of paints) There are lots of places on the web where you can find Joni's paintings, but here's one for starters: http://www.jmdl.com/shinytoys/art/ Have fun! Chance? Take a *chance*? Are you kidding? And Catherine, I know you're talking about the NE Jonifest list here, but it kinda undersells Jonifest itself in a guilt-by-association fashion. And I'm sure that's the last thing you intended. In fact, I know so, so I'm not throwing stones here. In fact, it's a chance to talk up Jonifest itself :) Lest anyone think signing up for Jonifest is taking a chance, let me just point out that it's three days of fabulous company, food, surroundings and music. Add the pre-fest day and it's four. After three years of fests, and longer on the list, I've not heard a single fest-goer return from the North East of the USA saying "well, that was a bit sh*t, wasn't it?", which I think says it all. I have, however, heard a lot of people return home from fest commenting how mundane real life is, how for a few days the rest of the world just didn't matter, and how many new friends they'd made. If you love Joni and have a few dollars spare, just sign up and go. It's really that simple. You might think that four days away doesn't amount to a proper holiday, but it does, in spades. It's currently my annual holiday, and does far more for me than a week by any sunny beach. - --Chris Marshall chrisATstryngs.com (AIM: Chr15Marshall) "If you're ever lost, I'll beat the world to finding you" Stryngs, "Bobblehats and Beer" Band website, with downloads, at http://www.stryngs.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jun 2004 21:05:36 EDT From: LCStanley7@aol.com Subject: Re: Billy Jeff tour, NJC July 2, 2004 -1:00 p.m. Books-A-Million Lakewood Village Shopping Park N. I have a copy of that down in the basement where the LPs are (probably all warped to crap by now, but I've still got them.) Disco is today's nostalgia. Looking at that list, here's a few synchronicities just from today: - - I took my son to see Shrek 2 today - the song "Le freak" is in the film - - We rented the film "Radio" and watched it just now - "Rubberband Man" is in the film - - I'm reading "Fortress of Solitude" right now (thanks for recommending it, Smurph), mentioned in this article, along with the song, "Play that funky music, white boy" (I always thought they were saying, "Play that funky music all night"), which is mentioned a few times in the book Years ago, when my parents moved into a condo, they had their bedroom wallpapered in this garish shiny wallpaper, so my sisters and I started referring to their bedroom as the disco inferno. And just about anything by Earth, Wind and Fire is fantastic. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2004 #275 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
