Somebody besides RR & me wants to talk about vinyl! Cool. Q:>1) Did Joni's 1st album (STAS) come on the tri-color Reprise label in the US?> A: I've heard people talk about "Steamboat" labels but not tri-color, so I don't know. I have Clouds with a steamboat on the label but the colors are just black, bright orange and brown (burnt orange). You aren't counting black as the 3rd color so this is news to me. Simon would know, without a doubt. Maybe he'll post or contact you off-list. Q: 2a) How many of Joni's early albums had white label promos or timing strips? A: Only Simon knows. Q: 2b) I'd really love to have "Court and Spark" with timing strip or white label. Does it exist? A: I'd bet on it. I have some later titles with a white label & promo sticker but without the timing strip. Although I understand the "cool" factor of having those things, I'd recommend the Nautilus pressing for the better sound. It was mastered at 1/2 speed and pressed on premium vinyl. Don't buy it on gemm though; it goes for almost nothing on ebay. Q: 3) Lastly, does anyone have any Joni white label promo LP's (other than [STAS, FTR, THOSL]) in near mint condition for sale? Please contact me privately if you do. A: I don't have any for sale right now. Last year, on Joni's birthday, I put up several American promos of Mingus though. Mingus promos are "da bomb". They sound incredibly good, especially compared to any of her other titles. Shadows and Light is exceptional too. I wish FOR THE ROSES had this kind of clarity... I've bought and sold at least 5 copies of FTR and there isn't clarity in the masters. Although they aren't for sale, I have a white label of Ladies of the Canyon, Miles Of Ailes, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, and Hejira. I bought all of these as 2nd hand vinyl but they ALL lack timing strips for radio. I got 1/2 in local stores and 1/2 on ebay. Here are some questions you didn't ask: Q: Are there any known flaws in US promos? A: DJRD (Don Juan's Reckless Daughter) has one, yeah. On the side dedicated to Paprika Plains, I can always hear a big 'snick!' a few seconds before "the band plugs in again." At first I thought my copy had a pressing flaw but I've bought at least 3 copies of that promo and they all have it. Maybe an engineer punched in to turn up the level at that point. I pretty sure the HDCD does not have that flaw in it (which would make it a mastering error I guess). Q: Geffen promos? A: I have Dog Eat Dog with gold promo embossing on the cover but the sound isn't nearly as good as the recently re-mastered edition within THE COMPLETE GEFFEN RECORDINGS on CD. They just didn't do the LP promo that well. Q: Other than promos, are there other ways to get better sounding vinyl of Joni's releases? A: I have WILD THINGS RUN FAST on a nicer Quinex II pressing. These seem to be limited editions, not promos. Mine is nice but I'll bet the Mobile Fidelity version is better. Since I have no money this year, I won't be able to compete for vinyl auctions for awhile. So, I'll just go ahead and give you the straight story: for sound quality, you want Japanese pressings. I was lucky enough to get a Japanese pressing of "SHADOWS AND LIGHT". Man, was it expensive but if you have a promo of BLUE, you won't bat an eye. I have Joni's literary masterpiece, THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS on a Japanese pressing (with Obi for whatever that's worth). It's not a promo but I'll never sell it. Yeah, it sounds better. Lastly, I sold off several American promos of MINGUS when I got a Japanese promo (!). There's no way I could have been the successful bidder if the title was BLUE so I got lucky. To me, MINGUS, FOR THE ROSES, THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS are just as brilliant as BLUE. I know you like her soprano voice but I like the jazz-influenced era. There are so many textures in Hissing so for me, it's a desert island disc along with Abbey Road, FTR, Blue, Sgt Pepper, Ram, and Air Supply's debut. There might be a ringer in the list. :) I'll donate them all to Simon's archive when I go, I suppose, but I'm sure none of them will be a centerpiece there. :) All the best, Lama ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jun 2004 00:24:47 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: give joni a break **c'mon now she wnts to be remembered for something other than morning morgantown Hey Walterphil. great to hear from you again! I can guarantee you that NOBODY on the planet would say "Morning Morgantown" in a free association with "Joni Mitchell". Hope that helps. Give her a break? No f*cking way - I respect her too much to let her off the hook so easily. "Hejira" ends side one, and "Song For Sharon" begins side two. Lama Emily Tedrowe how was the hejira album divided by songs? that is, where did the break come, and which song began side two? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jun 2004 00:36:19 EDT From: KindTaper@aol.com Subject: another known flaw on a Joni album - vljc Thanks Lama for the long post on the vinyl. In response to something you mentioned: Lama said: <> There is a drawing of a steamboat on all of the labels, but in 1967, they changed from a tri-color, pink green and yellow "steamboat" label, to an label that is orange on the top and brown about halfway down through the base. Around 1969 or so, they killed the orange top half and went all brown, ant the only thing that remains orange is the box with the "r" for Reprise. Now for the flaw: If you have "Court and Spark handy, vinyl or CD, listen to the beginning of Free Man In Paris. After she sings "Everybody's in it for their own gain" and a *millisecond* before she sings "You can't please them all", you will hear a tiny "pop". Now, this could have been an engineering flub, where a new vocal track was lain over a bad one and has yet to be erased on remastered CD editions, or I'm just nuts, but if you listen to it, I swear, it's there. It drives me crazy everytime I hear the song. When I first bought the CD, it was the old, non-remastered version. This was after hearing the "pop" on the LP. I then bought the new HDCD version, and the "pop" is still there. Would love to hear if others hear it (listen carefully).
