I lean toward thinking that's not the case, but I do think they're taking unfair advantage of the situation to compare themselves to Reagan -- even if the comparison is accurate in many ways. (And not good ways, imo.) They all want to be "heroes." As if ... Cindy, you wrote: > gisele and i were talking about that just this morning, and get > this - we couldn't remember any other presidents who had died > since KENNEDY! i think that's a fair indicator of how crazy this > stuff is. Oh honey, where were you when Nixon died? That was April 1994. It was a big deal, although not quite as big a deal as the death of Reagan. > lori, other DC-area folks - the news is reporting about 150k > people filing past the casket. have you noticed a > larger-than-average number of tourists about? Not really. Other than it being summer in the "nation's capital" (as the news and weather people like to call DC every single fecking day, as if we don't know it), nothing is much different than usual. 150,000 people filing past the casket seems quite possible and even reasonable, given the number of people who live in this area and the number of gov't workers, etc. > it seems unreal to me that people would show up in those numbers > to see a box with a dead guy inside, but maybe i'm just grumpy > and jaded. Hey, Mary actually thought long and hard about driving down to the Capitol herself but then decided she would be able to see more on TV. Afterall, she voted for the dude both times (this is a HUGE bone of contention between us; interesting to me is that we were both in the military at the time but we saw his presidency from wildly opposite points of view). Mary thinks he'll go down as one of the greatest presidents in history. I'm all for Mary personally paying her respects, as long as she sticks a "Kerry for President" sticker on her truck before driving to DC. (She plans to vote for Kerry, as do I.) : ) Personally, I was hoping for an open casket or a glass one. Not to be morbid or disrespectful, but I've been curious to see what the ravages of Alzheimer's and age did to Reagan. Actually, I find it extremely disrespectful to fly his body back and forth across the country. Really, I do. It's just wrong, and kind of sickening. As a last note, have y'all heard the banter about putting Reagan's face on the $10 bill? I guess Hamilton will have to go. http://www.hillnews.com/news/060804/memorial.aspx For my money (pun quite intended), I think that if Reagan's mug is going on any denomination of currency, it should go on the THREE DOLLAR bill. Perfectly fitting since he disliked homosexuals so fervently. But it was a good movie and in many ways it was faithful to the spirit of the Iliad and where it wasn't - such as the Wooden Horse was from the Aeneid by Vigil - what the hell. NJC Hello again all. Been away for a while. Being here in DC the funeral thing is waaaay too much. If I were the Reagan family, Idda sent an empty casket to DC, then had the real service and internment privately, without the press and media. I respected him as my President, but, even though the casket is only blocks away from me right now (I'm at work for the night), I have no desire to see it, so I won't. The circus atmosphere could cause me to do something stupid and I might ridicule the assembled and start a mob, so I'll pass. I know, it's like he's on tour or something. The media gets ratings, and damn right they know who hands out the big tax breaks, and dismantles the media monopoly laws. Who loves ya, baby?
