On the other hand, I keep reading recurring posts on the photography lists about 3 year old "burned CDs" which have separations. The data layer has actually lifted off the base, making them unplayable. Every time I've read about somebody with this complaint, they say they've stored the discs inside, in normal temperatures. Some of these were made by Kodak in a product called "Photo CD", intended for print professionals. They were hideously expensive scans. On top of that the CDRs with a gold layer, intended for archiving, are not easily available. If you're thinking that a spindle of 50 from a discount store is going to make your cassettes live longer, I'm skeptical. I'm sure you'll get lots of advice from others on how to do this. I guess my take is to keep using the cassettes and get that player tuned up or replaced. What do the librarians and archivists in the JMDL say? Jerry? Simon? "Archiving" cassettes to CD-R is going backwards, right? Lama Covington, KY, US PS to RR: Wouldn't it be funny if all of the Napster users who stole songs and burned them to CDRs, lost them to layer separation? The stuff he plays is power chords. Power chords are basically played with the root and the fifth (no third). Many of them can be played with only two fingers down, but you don't play all the strings. That may be the answer to Em's dilemma. If you do a google search on "power chords" you may find a solution that lets you play horrible chords like C# and B without having to barre them. It also occurred to me that you might be able to tune your guitar to an open D and use straight barres for most of these chords up and down the neck(with the exception of the minor - I think there was just one, and you could probably play that with just a couple of fingers down - but then you'd probably be playing it like Joni, and I think you wanted to play McGuinn's version, which I've never heard & that most likely sounds a fair bit different from Joan's.) He just got back from a month's vacation, and is catching up. He's definitely been missed as has everyone who used to be around and isn't anymore. I just got off the phone with silly Jimmy in Ft. Myers, and we were talking about how difficult it is to maintain a long-term relationship with this list, like any long-term relationship I suppose. You've gotta deal with all the highs and lows and fights and stuff. And the "magic" of finding fellow souls who get Joni is really cool at first but wears off in time so you've gotta find some other hooks to keep it interesting. Unless you lurk, in which case I suppose it's a lot like watching daytime serial. It's funny to go back into the archives and pull up some of those old digests and bring back back memories of people who used to be here and wonder whatever happened to them. Those were heady days, to be sure. It was an incredible thrill to be able to quote a Joni song (past 1973 even!) and have everyone get it! But as you note, maintaining that feeling is hard. I've unsubbed and subbed several times since then and currently mostly lurk. I find I have said most of what I had to say about Joni and her work. And yet she has a pull--as does this group--that makes me want to keep connected to Joniphiles, even if it is a tenuous connection . . . As for those early JMDLers that I think about from time to time . . . has anyone kept in touch with Meri? I want to say his last name was Jones (because in my mind I kept seeing him as the love child of Buddy Ebsen and Lee Meriwether, who of course starred together in Barnaby Jones) but I could be wrong. We would e-mail off list now and then but as often happens in this cyber-world, we eventually lost touch. I'm glad to see the recognizable name here, still, just to know that there are people with more stamina than I have . . . not that that's such an amazing accomplishment. lol - -Neil ===== Neil Ellis Orts 713-838-1787 Houston, TX keep up with my creative endeavors--join my newsletter list: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/neonews ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Jun 2004 22:30:26 -0400 From: FredNow@aol.com Subject: Re: New album from Fred Simon? njc In an email dated 6/6/2004 9:17:49 pm GMT Daylight time, Chris Marshall writes: >On 6 Jun 2004, at 4:24, FredNow@aol.com wrote: >> Horn, bass clarinet, and penny whistle) and Steve Rodby on acoustic >> bass; I played piano. > >Blimey! That's one helluva name to have in your band... You mean Steve Rodby, extraordinary bassist and co-producer with the Pat Metheny Group? Yes, he certainly is, but Paul McCandless ain't exactly chopped liver. (By the way, a little bit of Joni connection, once removed ... that is, besides the Metheny link ... McCandless played and recorded with Jaco's Word of Mouth band.) >If I wanted to buy a CD online, where would I look? The new one, scheduled to be released in September, will be available here and there, but definitely at http://naim-audio.com/ which is also where my previously most recent album, Dreamhouse, is available. In the mean time, there are a couple of other albums of mine which are greatly enhanced by Steve Rodby, Open Book and Usually/Always, the latter of which is also greatly enhanced by Paul McCandless. The original joke was a Clinton joke...the trade was for Hillary and Chelsea. Razorbacks are from Arkansas, not Texas. Donna responded: I came upon a child of God He was walking along the road And I asked him, where are you going And this he told me - ------------------------------------------------- You've gotta find some other souls who "get it." Which brings me to my journey from Texas to New Jersey this past weekend. The JMDL list was invited by MagsnBrei to attend the Appel Farm Music Festival in Elmer, NJ the weekend of June 4-6, 2004 and I accepted. Other JMDLrs who accepted were our own Lori Fye and her beautiful partner Mary, and Timothy Spong, who knows all the words to Shawn Colvin's tunes. It was great to meet yet another JMDLr in person!!! The day was around 60 degrees and raining a fine mist continuously but everyone sat in their rain gear taking shelter where they could in order to hear the music. The highlights of the day for me were The Kennedys, Lizz Wright, Shawn Colvin and JONATHA BROOK *what a voice!!! She made me dance in the rain! Mags, Brian and I retired that evening worn out but filled with new music and were then blessed to have the company of our own Nicki after the show. Her sparkling eyes are always filled with love and laughter - and Sunday morning during coffee we all watched Joni DVDs. I had never seen Shadows and Light, though it is one of my favorite albums and we were singing along because that's what Joni fans do, and there were many Joni moments. We all knew the words, we all get it. We just had ourselves a Mini-Jonifest! (Please insert southern accent here) YEEE HAAAWW! Everyone who saw me this weekend couldn't believe that I would travel so far for that festival. However the main reason for traveling was to see my friends and to be with other people who understand my passion for Joni Mitchell. Over coffee and waffles, singing everything from Blue to Hejira to Night Ride Home and everything in between my soul was rejuvenated*.. Thanks again to those who gave friendship, food, clothing and shelter to a Texas girl who came unprepared for anything but the beach, ha ha. Certainly all blanks are not created equal; this website suggests that rather than a certain brand, or even dye type, that you find a combination of blank and burner that works for you. If you're interested in the techie side of CD-r's: http://www.mscience.com/faq.html#CDR For really important field work and archiving, they recommend testing, and I have heard of music studios that test blank CD-r's and throw most away. They also remind that scratching the top of a CD is worse than scratching the bottom, because there is only a thin layer of coating, and the data layer is right under that.
