Shades of Nick Drake and Joni, not necessarily musically but in the sincerity, the heart, the authentic and beautiful spirit that is infused in his performances. And he has a grace and skill with his playing and singing that is, well, at times sublime. Hope Kakki, Coyote Rick or someone got to see him when he is on tour here. As always, there are tunes from all genres and all corners of the globe. And before I trace the tracklist, lemme say thanks to those who helped bring in the catch: Stephen Toogood (where have you been, Stephen? - you are missed!) Les Irvin (I suppose I should really thank Les every go-round as he hosts the covers site, but for this volume he was able to snag a downloadable one that I couldn't figure out, so thanks buddy! And here's what's on it: 1. Mandy Lagan - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: Canadian Jazz singer Lagan gets the party started with a nice take on Joni & Charlie's story. 2. The New Blue of Yale University - River: Another college acapella version, pretty as is the song, but not a standout. 3. Peter Isaacson - Both Sides Now: One from way back, a real nice folkish-country feel to this one. 4. Gabe Pigg - Big Yellow Taxi: Another of those annoying "kids covers" of popular songs - this is a cover of the Counting Crows cover. Why? And what's up with the name - Gabe Pigg? Even Porky wouldn't claim him. 5. Madeline Milla - A Case Of You 6. Madeline Milla - River: Madeline is from the UK, and she's very Tori-influenced, probably was inspired to play these because they are the two that Tori does, although she does acknowledge them as Joni songs (they're live recordings) They're both very well done, just the same. 7. Jonas Nordwall - Both Sides Now: Wow, and I thought Gabe Pigg was a weird name - Jonas Nordwall sounds like one of the characters in Revenge Of The Nerds, and this is an extremely NERDY cover - I love it because it's so bizarre. Apparantly this was a test record for a new kind of organ (the musical kind) and Jonas was putting it through its paces. He plays BSN in a couple of different styles, one of which sounds like a funeral. Weird, wacky, and wonderful. 8. Yoghill - Amelia 9. Yoghill - People's Parties: Two more from our French singer-songwriter pal with the affinity for obscure Joni covers. As before, Thierry Antoine plays all instruments and produces, and sings with a strong and imo appealing accent. 10. Suzanne - Chelsea Morning 11. Suzanne - Both Sides Now 12. Suzanne - Woodstock: These three come from Australia, from the 70's. I don't know much about her, there wasn't a lot of detail on the record. I guess she thought she'd be like Cher & Madonna and wouldn't need to mess with a last name. Oh well...anyway, these are all really nice, nothing too surprising, pretty straightforward but very well sung & produced with a nice array of musical colors. 13. Thomasina - The Circle Game: A recent recording, and a pretty take on the standard. 14. Azure McCall - Shades of Scarlett Conquering 15. Azure McCall - Be Cool: NOW we're talking, baybee! We've heard Hawaiian jazz chanteuse Azure McCall before (she did a nice take on the title song of HOSL), these come from her 2003 release titled "The Gift" and they are both prime. The first features a nice brass solo, and the second one really swings wonderfully. I hope she keeps on doing Joni covers, I'll take everything from her I can get. 16. Los Simpaticos - Both Sides Now: This was a very obscure indie release from the late 60's, I'm not sure where they were from. 17. The Michael Raitzyk Trio - Woodstock: Another new one, and a really nice instrumental too. A jazz/blues kinda sound, nice guitar work. 18. Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - Hejira: And #53 comes to a close with an unreleased live recording, this time it's a 10+ minute version of her epic Hejira, played in jam-band fashion and also some fine fine fine guitar work here as well. Also a comfort at the end of the song when he yells out 'does anybody know who wrote that song?' and several voices shout out Joni's name. This reminds me of the SUPERB version from Pazfest, which WAS released and is available on CDBaby. So that's #53...thanks for reading all the way to here, assuming you did. I do want to share this one around, so I'll have a little trivia test/contest to give some away. Stay tuned! And watch this space same time next month when another batch of Joni covers pops up. One trait to add to that list of yours would be humour. He has a great stage manner with an easy humourous style that makes you forget that he's not speaking his first language. Laura ********Eric's original post: In order to enable latecomers to the list or new traders have a chance of listening to Bob Muller's incredible compilation of covers of Joni's songs - some 1500 in all - this begins the launch of the Perpetual Joni Covers Trains. For those not familiar with trading trains, here is how they work. When the disks come to you, you make copies of as much of the contents as you want, and then you post back to this list offering to pass the disks along to the next person. You do not keep the originals -- you keep the copies you made for yourself. On most trains, the convention is that you make the copies and send the masters along within two days. For these trains, you must agree to turn them around within one week. Sometimes the offer goes unclaimed. Bob and I expect that to happen from time to time. So, by participating, you agree to just hang on to the disks and then make another offer a month or so later (or to respond if somebody posts a grovel looking for them). In theory, if everybody takes good care of the disks, wrapping them well, not letting them get scratched, etc. and passes them along, these covers will run on the tracks for years. Bob copied 50+ disks for me to launch this and I have copied them so there is a LOT of time sunk into offering these up. Nobody is going to monitor the progress of these trains so if you participate and then lose the disks or fail to re-offer them, you will have kept others from enjoying them. When you post an offer, please include these "rules". One final note, I know a few folks like to compress these into MP3s. If you want to, go ahead but please do not send MP3s to the next person - MP3s permanently delete some of the "data" and sound quality degrades so please pass the masters along. So, anybody who would like to receive volumes 21-30, please send me: 1. Your mailing address and 2.
