I haven't decided on any dates yet and want to check with the list to see if perhaps there is a group getting together to go. I thought it would be more fun to meet up with a lister(s) from the group and share the experience together. I live in Southern California (Orange County) so I would be flying up on for maybe a weekend show. Just checking... Just in case I haven't expressed enough times here Blue is my absolute Joni fave. Points for the girlfriend for purchasing Blue recently - way to go baby! But right now for a little break - I have put on some vinyl and am listening to Hejira. And Amelia happens to be on as I write this. BTW - we have this station here that plays all of "our" music from the 60's and 70's called the Drive or WDRV. Every Friday night they pick a year and at 10 pm they play 10 at 10 from that year. Last night was 1967 and speaking of Janis ... they played "Bye Bye Baby" dont know if that's the exact title. But anyway, they mentioned after the set that - Janis and Big Brother and the Holding Company came to Chicago to record that song and the album. Cool to think of Janis coming here just to record. Now IF - I repeat IF - I make it to fest - it's making me want to tackle that song! It's certainly not my usual fare, but right now I am considering it a possibility. Ahh this is the part before fest I love all the brainstorming, anticipation and planning. Actually there is Joni content - but I am not changing the tag - suffer joni onlys LOL! JK! I've been reading'n reading (some hundreds posts left) with no time to write... (Very glad to read from new -and talkative, and interesting- people here!) That new release from Joni... is obviously a cut-off from last year's boxset. It's obvious that, after the edition for fans, comes another one for trying to make more popular these songs from the less (and in justice) heard of our Queen's albums. just my two cents: The Windfall: off. where's Cherokee Louise? the title... they/she couldn't find another one more pretentious? I mean, yes we can consider it like a vision on actual state of things, but: for an album of previously released songs? Of course the 80s albums weren't properly aknowledged ... is actual situation better for hearing these songs on the couple of radio stations that are going to play them? In my humble opinion, since Joni doesn't want to record nothing, we must yell for that Carnegie Hall show to be released, or The 2nd Fret sets: these would be a Must. Yes, SIQUOMB's entire career is a Masterwork, but Her early years are highly historic! Humm... Have a Wonderful time! Emiliano NP: "Aspettami": I Muvrini - -------------------- LOS ANGELES, May 26 /PRNewswire/ [...] She tackles consumerism in "The Reoccurring Dream" and exploitation in "The Windfall (Everything For Nothing)" and "Sex Kills." Scorched are the corrupting power of money in "Dog Eat Dog," "No Apologies" and "Passion Play (The Story Of Jesus And Zachius ... The Little Tax Collector)," of advertising and image-making in "Fiction," of televangelists in "Tax Free" (with Steiger delivering the money-grubbing sermon) and of the values of Western culture in "The Three Great Stimulants." A news-specific track is "The Magdalene Laundries," the true story of the horrid conditions suffered by young unwed pregnant Irishwomen who were sent there in decades past. Mitchell's passion leaps from "Slouching Toward Bethlehem," her adaptation of a poem by W.B. Yeats; the eerie "The Beat Of Black Wings," and the tale of hunger in "Ethiopia." Her championing of Native American culture rises from "Lakota," in which Iron Eyes Cody is heard, and its corollary environmental beliefs in her adaptation of the Sons Of The Pioneers' classic "Cool Water" (with Willie Nelson). THE BEGINNING OF SURVIVAL, an optimistic title in itself, concludes on a hopeful note with a song whose title might very well be applied a la Don Quixote attacking the windmills to the influential and inspiring Mitchell -- "Impossible Dreamer." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 May 2004 21:32:48 -0400 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Holidays can be hard, njc I guess this is about the thread of revisiting old "homes" in some way. This is a 3 day weekend in the US because Monday is a national holiday and I've been thinking about my very old ex, Karen, from long ago. She's always near the top of my mind at New Year's. I guess I think of Karen when Sharon stirs hot cocoa in a coffee mug at work. And every time some says "final exams". And especially during the summer. And in the autumn at Thanksgiving dinner. Let's not forget Christmas. This is a very old wound... Anyway, today I was minding my own business, reading in the living room. The big rig was playing FM radio when Aretha Franklin came on with the slow intro for "Oh Me, Oh My" (I'm a Fool For You Baby). I see myself in some lines: "to make you laugh, i'll be the fool for you. although people turn and stare, i really don't care. i'd give my everything to keep you, [girl]. it breaks my heart when you're not there." I see Karen in other lines. She was built like a ballerina and took classes after school as a kid. She had developed perfect posture to overcome scoliosis. For me, it's visual to the point of being visceral when Aretha sings "i'll stage a ballet on the tabletop. command perfomance." The bassist builds the tension until the last refrain. There are backing vocalist from the Baptist church. I can see Aretha, hands on hips, making those supernatural, octave jumps: " oh me / oh my (me oh my) i am (fool for) a **FOOL** for you, baby (me oh) oh (fool for) me / oh my (ah) you know that i'm (craze) *CRAZY* baby (love you) i love you too (baby) " They say if you can feeling your feelings, you're in a good place. And it's good that I dug out my Aretha CDs. Compared to depression, this ain't so bad. npimh: Albert Brooks as the overthinking journalist in "Broadcast News", asking his estranged love interest >Does anyone ever WIN one of these things?> All the best, Jim L'Hommedieu BTW, everone knows that Aretha was "discovered" singing in church. Did you know her father was the minister? And that he knew Rev. Abernathy and King? She's the real deal. I guess I'll always have Aretha. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 May 2004 18:56:40 -0700 (PDT) From: Susan Guzzi Subject: Re: "np" njc Thanks so much Emiliano - its been a long time coming!
