And now since I am old, I get to tell my Patti story - which I may have before. Back in the early 80's, I saw Patti at the Aragon ballroom here in Chicago. I can't remember the set list but she rocked and the crowd was ravenous for more and more of her. Towards the end of the show she picked up a rose on stage and I was standing just off center stage and she threw the rose out and I caught it. OMG! I was mobbed and jumped on - but held on to the rose through it all. She also took to playing the sax ,or was it the clarinet, at that gig. Can't remember right now LOL! I remember her lying down on her back and playing. Still not sure if she played very well or was being very abstract - LOL! After the show, my friend and I broke through with the press and finally got backstage. What an eye-opener. We just kept opening doors and walking into scenes we probably shouldn't have seen. Then we got tossed again by security and this time they were much more understanding. They lead us to Patti's limo in the alley and told us to wait there and we could see her on her way out. So as we waited, we heard a huge disturbance in the front of the building. Police cars were everywhere, apparently Patti had gone to one of the windows and waved a bra out the window. Well it created a mild riot and many were arrested! Soon after I was leaning against the building - still waiting and this little woman stumbled out and stood next to me - quite disoriented - it was Patti! She smiled and shoook my hand as I reached for her and then immediately climbed into the limo. My friend and I climbed in as well and tried to talk to her but were dragged out. This was so unlike me, but apparently someone had slipped me something - in my drinks (wink). But I remember that we both begged Patti to read our poetry and hear what we had to say - she just kept staring at us as we were pulled back and she was smiling and mumbling - she was really screwed up! Years later, in fact 2 or 3 years ago - she played my neighborhood folk festival. I took my 7 year old niece at the time and my little Angela loved her and was totally enthralled with how she moved and shook and sang! I was quite proud of her enthusiasm. I also took her the following year to see Michelle Shock. Ahhh maybe I can get her off Brittney Spears yet! I love Patti - she is a poet and like our Joni wil be revered long after all these imposter musicians are gone! My favorite patti song is Ask the Angels - hmmm those were the days! And I am glad that she is a voice of reason and protest against the evil cabal that is this administration! Thanks Patti - People DO have the Power! And welcome to our newbie Patti - nice to have you here! Peace, Susan Win a $20,000 Career Makeover at Yahoo! "Vital information is being deleted, buried, distorted and has otherwise gone missing from government Web sites and publications," Linda Basch, president of the National Council for Research on Women, said in a telephone interview. "Taken cumulatively, this has an enormously negative effect on women and girls." A council report said the missing information fell into four categories: women's health; their economic status; objective scientific data; and information aimed at protecting women and girls and helping them advance. The deletions and alterations appear to hew to a political agenda, rather than providing the nonpartisan, unbiased data that has been the tradition of U.S. government reports, the council said. Its report cited a fact sheet from the Centers of Disease Control that focused on the advantages of using condoms to prevent sexually transmitted disease; it was revised in December 2002 to say evidence on condoms' effectiveness in curbing these diseases was inconclusive. The National Cancer Institute's Web site was changed in 2002 to say studies linking abortion and breast cancer were inconsistent; after an outcry from scientists, the institute later amended that to say abortion is not associated with increased breast cancer risk. 25 PUBLICATIONS DELETED At the Labor Department's Women's Bureau Web site, the report said 25 key publications on subjects ranging from pay equity to child care to issues relating to black and Latina women and women business owners had been deleted with no explanation. Key government offices dedicated to addressing the needs of women have been disbanded, according to the report. These include the Office of Women's Initiatives and Outreach in the White House and the President's Interagency Council on Women. At the Pentagon, the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services was slated to be dismantled but was saved after an outcry. However, the report said this committee now focused on issues such as health care for servicewomen and the effects of deployment on families, but not on equity and access issues. In the area of scientific objectivity, the report said two advisory committees recommended the Food and Drug Administration approve a contraceptive known as Plan B as a nonprescription drug but were blocked by political pressure from doing so. Regarding violence against women, the report said the U.S. attorney general, as of March 2004, had failed to conduct and publish a study required under the 2000 Violence Against Women Act to investigate discrimination against domestic violence victims in getting insurance. The White House did not immediately return a call for comment. _____________ http://news.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=domesticNews&storyID=4977467 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 May 2004 10:39:10 -0500 From: "Music Is Special" Subject: Perpetual Joni Covers Train: Volumes 1-10 of JM Covers Getting back to the music....in order to enable latecomers to the list or new traders have a chance of listening to Bob Muller's incredible compilation of covers of Joni's songs - some 1500 in all - this begins the launch of the Perpetual Joni Covers Trains. For those not familiar with trading trains, here is how they work. When the disks come to you, you make copies of as much of the contents as you want, and then you post back to this list offering to pass the disks along to the next person. You do not keep the originals -- you keep the copies you made for yourself. On most trains, the convention is that you make the copies and send the masters along within two days. For these trains, you must agree to turn them around within one week. Sometimes the offer goes unclaimed. Bob and I expect that to happen from time to time. So, by participating, you agree to just hang on to the disks and then make another offer a month or so later (or to respond if somebody posts a grovel looking for them). In theory, if everybody takes good care of the disks, wrapping them well, not letting them get scratched, etc. and passes them along, these covers will run on the tracks for years. Bob copied 50+ disks for me to launch this and I have copied them so there is a LOT of time sunk into offering these up. Nobody is going to monitor the progress of these trains so if you participate and then lose the disks or fail to reoffer them, you will have kept others from enjoying them. When you post an offer, please include these "rules". One final note, I know a few folks like to compress these into MP3s. If you want to, go ahead but please do not send MP3s to the next person - MP3s permanently delete some of the "data" and sound quality degrades so please pass the masters along. So, anybody who would like to receive volumes 1-10 (there are actually more than 10 disks because of Bob's initial numbering system), please send me: 1. Your mailing address and 2. Your promise to reoffer, etc. If you want to know what is on the disks, please see this link: http://www.jmdl.com/covers/byvolume.cfm Enjoy and have a nice weekend, Eric ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 May 2004 08:53:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Em Subject: Re: njc, patti smith and Nina Hagen?! - --- Lori Fye wrote: > > well yeah but she made me wish I was in Berlin, im BahnhofZoo aufs > > Damenclo (sp?) > > Is/was that the name of the big women's bar in Berlin? I will add this important note regarding Volumes 1-10... When this project began (and I no freakin' idea what I was getting myself into), I took lots of cassette tapes from folks who kindly sent me recordings. Well, the transfer of those tapes to CD included the hiss, so in the interest of perpetuating the best quality of these tracks I went back and wherever possible procured the source recording, be it LP, CD whatever so I could remaster these volumes. For instance, Volume 2 WAS 4 cd's, I remastered it to remove the "contributions" (Joni singing background vocals, etc) so now the sound is vastly improved and it's a 3-CD set. So even those of you who have been on this crazy train since the beginning might have an interest in replacing the copies they have. Just got some wonderful recordings in the mail (Thanks Doug - you da man) and one of them features Joni playing 'Roses Blue' and giving it this intro: "Speaking of the weirdest things (she had just played 'Dr. Junk') here's a little song about a witch who lives in my country's capital. (picking the intro) All you need to be a witch is the right amount of negativity & the belief that you have that power (chuckle)..." Later in the same show, she begins to play "I Don't Know Where I Stand" and has to stop to retune, and tells this story: "The same day that I discovered crazy old Dr. Junk the dentist man I sat up all night and wrote another song which I do my little trumpet solo in. I'm telling you there's a trumpet solo so that when I get to the part where there's a trumpet solo you won't say (whispers) 'what's she doing?'...my Daddy was a trumpet player, I always wanted to be a trumpet player." Just thought I'd share this tidbits with the one who would appreciate such trivia. Or one for every card in the deck, not counting the jokers and lord knows we have enough here to count... So anyway, without further ado, here we go with Volume 52 in the never-ending, noise-pollutin' rootin-tootin' series that has been called (by me) the "Greatest Compilation In Rock & Roll History". A big thanks to those who chipped in to create this one: Monica Cardinale (I can't overemphasize what an incredible help she has been) Thierry Antoine And now, all rise as we introduce our starting lineup: 1. Carli Munoz/Eddie Gomez: Both Sides Now : A very tasty instrumental jazz version, gets #52 off on the right foot. Some very nice improvisations of the melody. 2. Anneloes Verveld Combo - Big Yellow Taxi: A live recording, great sound, and actually a cover of the Counting Crows cover. Nice guitar work and a nice vocal. 3. Claire Daly - Goodbye Porkpie Hat: A little lady with a BIG baritone sax, and she plays a mean one too. 4. Natalie Merchant - River: Well...most of it anyway. Yet another JMDL exclusive, this is a soundboard recording from a 2001 show. Nat sings about half the song interspersed with some anecdotes about Christmas. Even throws in a bar or 2 of "California" at the end. Bonus! 5. The Changing Winds - Both Sides Now: Much better than the Breaking Winds version, which really stinks. All I know of this youth ensemble is that they were from Texas and put out this LP in the late 60's/early 70's. Nice harmonies anyway, they do a good job imo. 6. Yoghill - Night ride home 7. Yoghill - Jericho : Once again we feature a couple of recordings from French singer-songwriter Thierry Antoine, who plays all instruments here, sings, and produced these tracks. I love the strength of his guitar combined with the fragility and tenderness of his vocals, not to mention the fact that he picks some 'off the beaten path' Joni songs to cover. 8. Theresa Andersson - Carey: This one is pretty awesome, and comes from Paz' Nawlins pal. When the track starts out, you think it's a Jungle Line cover, as she intro's it with a very African sound. Emphasis on the percussion, she really builds the tune through its paces and puts a unique spin on it. 9. Ranee Lee - Both Sides Now: Canadian Jazz singer/chanteuse Ranee Lee put out this tribute to Canadian songwriters and includes her rendition of the franchise - very Diane Reeves-ish. 10. Jane Hall - Help Me 11. Jane Hall - Woodstock 12. Jane Hall - Chelsea Morning 13. Jane Hall - You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio 14. Jane Hall - Both Sides Now: These Jane Hall tracks are all taken from a karaoke tape titled "You Sing The Hits of Joni Mitchell", side A is the backing track, side B features these vocals. As you would expect from karaoke, they are pretty straightforward repro's of Joni's recordings in terms of rhythm and style. 15. Witness - Woodstock: Ian Matthews latest group, here recycling the hit he had with Matthews Southern Comfort in a live setting. 16. Nazareth - This Flight Tonight (live): Taken from their 1981 live "Snaz" recording. I think Nazareth all on their own have made Joni a wealthy lady. 17. Steel Sunrise Steel Band - Carribbean Steel drum music by way of Connecticut. A lot of fun - ya mon, makes me think of da Ganja line mon. 18. Julie Anthony - Both Sides Now: Another pretty femvox version, this time from Australian vocalist Julie Anthony. And that's it...if you're interested in snagging a copy, lemme know. If you made it all the way to here, thanks for reading! So, anybody who would like to receive volumes 11-20, please send me: 1. Your mailing address and 2. Your promise to reoffer, etc. If you want to know what is on the disks, please see this link: http://www.jmdl.com/covers/byvolume.cfm Enjoy and have a nice weekend, Eric ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 May 2004 15:38:38 -0400 From: Doug Subject: Re: Roses Blue is about ____________? + Joni on the horn?
