A couple of things...at work today I saw the front page of USA Today which depicted, in not so living colour, over one hundred colour photos of US soldiers who died recently in Iraq. While I hesitate to get into political discussions, I cannot help but chime in on this one. It stopped me in my tracks so to speak. Bone/soul chilling images . I stood there surrounded by the chilled air of the libraryand read all the names and tried to imagine the lives that are now shattered all because. I wanted to cry but I went numb instead. Saving grace that. That's all I can say for now on this subject. I'm beyond angry about it all that I cannot even begin to articulate all that I feel in this moment. All in all, I think it's a good thing to show photos, real ones. War is hell and there's no way around it. Deja vu all over again. Why the hell shouldnt we see this? And more? I like what Bob Muller said...it's BULLSHIT not to. As for Garret, in my subject line, hero of the week award goes to you re: another hot topic of the week, abortion. I've struggled all week to stay out of it for a myriad of reasons. Ive much to say but have reconsidered as it gets too personal and what I have to say is perhaps inappropriate or might get lost in the masses or whatever. Suffice to say that Garrett's post touched me deeply as he said it all when he said that were his very own sister confronted with this decision, he would be there for her, by her side, through it all, with love, a hug and understanding. (paraphrased, i dont have the post in front of me). Garret, I just wanted to thank you for being spot on. Your words meant a lot to me. And finally, the writerly award of the week goes out to our very own Lucy in the Skye with diamonds. Outstanding story telling. Thank you so much for inviting us in on something so personal and private. Biggest hugs and admiration to you. Yeah the Pretenders were great and all...but but but...hmmmmm..have to examine my thinking. But the "em-filter" filters out Ms. Hynde. So I need to think what is it that Janis and Patti Smith had/have that none other has. Stugots perhaps? ::shrug:: dunno.... Trying to define the "em-filter". Not Bonnie Raitt either - she is filtered too. Wierd, the "em filter". It wants to group Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and Smokey Robinson together. You know there are photos of them where they all 3 look very similar, oddly enough. And really, have you ever seen all 3 of them together in the same room?? lol, ok kidding.. OK look I swear I'm *not* on drugs. Thanks for listening, thanks for playing. Wanted to say how much I've enjoyed all the conversation today. I "came for conversation" and I was not disappointed! Mine would be "Chain Gang". Only one that forces my ass to dance. It rolls easy. The best music is like that for me. Like if the motor were shut off, it would coast and coast and coast, as if pushed by the hand of god. And then some music, dang, it needs to be pulled by tug boat or 20 mule team just to roll down the road at all. Like someone had mentioned James McMurtry. When I first heard him, back in the 80's, I liked him. I WANTED to like him, hell he was bitching and moaning about all the right things, "painting by numbers" and all... and I truly do like his deep voice. But the stuff doesn't MOVE!!!! If it were a bicycle it would stop and you'd tump over as soon as you stopped peddling...whereas to me the most kick-ass music, you stop peddling, and man, you just keep flying..it has that beautiful energy - that music just WANTS to be and NEEDS to be. And "Chain Gang" touches that. And the 2 women rockers in my limited pantheon, not ALL their stuff has this - no artist's does. But some of their stuff HAD WINGS!!!!! "Horses" the song..sheesh the energy there..and with Janis, even as simple and messed up a little tune as "Down on Me"...total energy. FREE energy. OK one other female rocker I'd almost let in: Nina Hagen. You know, the Sunday magazine that comes with your newspaper's comics. Anyway, tonight I read the following in last week's edition, on Page 5 of the cover story: "The Tigris and Euphrates merge today in the abject town of Qurnah. This confluence is recent, after a 1954 flood redirected the Euphrates. On the banks is a tiny park about the size of an outdoor basketball court. It contains a shrine to Abraham, a few trees, lots of concrete and no grass. Joni Mitchell was right: They paved Paradise." Ok, two vinyl discs and an Amstel Light in hand, the verdict is: Album: "Nina Hagen Band" Maxi: "My Way" I bought these at in '85 or '86 at Graffiti, a used record shop in Bremerhaven, (West) Germany, for DM7.00 and DM6.00, respectively. Haven't listened to Nina in years; I'll have to do that (but tomorrow, when I can crank the stereo).
