Were they actually listed on amazon or am i mixing that up? I would love to see this happen, but is Joni really up for it? Joni's poetry - i'm not sure how good that would be. It could be great, but if she had anything to say wouldn't she be writing songs? An art book - would that be a presentation of her own art? A JM art coffee table book! I would surely invest in that, but would prefer to pay for Joni writing about other people's art. What is she up to these days? Lounging around in the sun? Painting? The Pentagon ban on news organizations photographing returning caskets at Dover was adopted in 1991 (Dick Cheney was then secretary of defense). As for what the families of the dead want, I think it probably depends on the family. I heard a mother who lost her son this morning who expressed frustration with the ban. Y'all are gonna hate me, but ... My work hours are 9:30 am to 6:00 pm, Mon-Fri, with an hour for lunch. That's 37.5 hours per week. Anything over 37.5 hours is paid (or comp'd with days off; my choice) at "time and a half" (1.5 x my hourly rate). I get 3 weeks of vacation each year, accrued at the rate of 4.688 hours per pay period. It can be rolled over to the next year if I don't use it all (but I'm typically in the hole). Same with sick leave, which is accrued at 2.5 hours per pay period. Typically the stress level is negligible. However, we're fairly flexible, so if I arrive later, I stay later; if I arrive earlier, I leave earlier. Sometimes I don't take lunch. Sometimes I take a short lunch. Sometimes I go to the gym, so I take a longer lunch. I'm the boss in my department and my boss is in another place, so there's no one to yell at me if I come in a few minutes late, except for me. Because I have worked there so long, I get five weeks vacation; and I get another week as management compensating time off, in lieu of overtime (regardless if I work no extra time, or a week, or two weeks, or whatever - I think it has balanced out over the years.) This fall, I will have been there 25 years, so I will get an extra week from her until I retire. Or die. Whichever comes first. (Gaaaahhhh!) Is is stressful? Yes, it can be. It's often very busy, and we get foolish demands imposed upon us by higher-ups who seem to think that everything they want is some kind of emergency, and that, on a scale of 1 to 10, everything they want, no matter how foolish or inane, is a 10. In my job, a lot of the stress can be self-induced and I frequently have to remind myself that, in the grand scheme of things, all of what we do isn't terribly important and to remember what is important - family, friends and just living life. Hi Marianne wish I had a teaching gig. Would love those summers off to ride far and wide on my bike. My hours are 7 to 3:30, Mon thru Fri. Some overtime in the afternoons or on Sat. For instance tomorrow I must work a bit. Not bad hours really. And its easy to sneak a bit of OT in, too, by *working* through lunches etc. Also I get to be online (as you've probably noticed) ALOT. Am up to 3 weeks vac. a year minus one day. Sorta stressful... some ways yes some ways no. It suits me I guess. If I could have a good radio here it would make it MUCH better. Think I'm gonna see about getting that for myself here. Another thing I like about my job is that its very much "of" this city where I live. The owners are from here since forever, I'm here since forever, we have some common history etc. That's valuable to me, as I continue to see the genericizing ('zat a word?) of America. I don't feel that way at my job. I'm in Tampa, working in a situation that could be transplanted back in Tampa 60 years right here and wouldn't be that different. (except for the computer aspect) I feel rooted at this job. Too bad it don't pay squat!!! Good thing its cheap to live down here! :) Em ===== ........... They ran through really fast and by the time security came, they were all gone. That was frightening on a number of counts - first, because the pictures are sick and they don't accomplish a thing by doing this, apart from either making people sick or pissing them off; and, because if they can drop pictures off on office desks, they can drop anything off. That was a while ago though. Security is better now - you can't even get in without a passcard. Back then, things were wide open. According to the report, Sinclair General Counsel Barry Faber actually said a program honoring fallen troops is "contrary to the public interest."...The decision is of particular interest considering Sinclair executives are major financial backers of President Bush's political campaigns...Sinclair's CEO David Smith was also a close ally of the White House's in the President's recent decision to deregulate the FCC...Additionally, the right wing is now touting Sinclair as "the next Fox." "STATEMENT OF THE SINCLAIR BROADCAST GROUP The ABC Television network announced on Tuesday that the Friday, April 30th edition of "Nightline" will consist entirely of Ted Koppel reading aloud the names of U.S. servicemen and women killed in action in Iraq. Despite the denials by a spokeswoman for the show the action appears to be motivated by a political agenda designed to undermine the efforts of the United States in Iraq. While the Sinclair Broadcast Group honors the memory of the brave members of the military who have sacrificed their lives in the service of our country, we do not believe such political statements should be disguised as news content..." She was just great. Probably the most enjoyable show I've been to bar none. I've seen Dylan and Joni in concert but Sarah knocked me out. I was not expecting too much after seeing her on the Degeneres show where she put on a kind of lack luster performance and I had seen her live at a radio taping last month where she was good but but in concert she was in her element. She played a lot of her older music which she seems more comfortable with. Unpretentious, friendly and if you like her music damned talented. I had talked to someone on the list a while back and we both kind of agreed her guitar playing was just so-so. Have to say after seeing her in concert I was dead wrong. Extremely competent comes to mind. Plays fairly complicated stuff while singing. If you like her stuff and ever get a chance see her.
