I can't remember the last time I had such a visceral adreaction to a record, especially one that is, on the face of it, so inoffensive. I haven't head the album, so I'm not commenting on that, but hearing that single (The Closest Thing To Crazy) it sounded to me that the cry had gone out from her label "somebody find me a Norah Jones!" Then Mike Batt (previously responsible for The Wombles and the theme to Seaside Special) got his claws into Katie Melua, a toothsome young woman with an exotic background (sound familiar?) and lo, a star was born. I'd be fascinated to hear the album... Comparisons are invidious, but on the basis of what little I've read, seen and heard so far (that single a few times and excerpts from other songs), Katie Melua is to Joni as Britney Spears is to Madonna. And, having pissed off all those who have enjoyed Katie's album (Call Off The Search? Sorry, I'm carrying on!), I will compound my sin by saying if you want to hear a really exciting new talent with attitude, songs, style and pizzazz to spare, you owe it to yourselves to check out Amy Winehouse. I've now had (from our local Brit owned brew pub with all the tanks and stuff) a huge Maibock (well I guess it was maybe a "pint"?), a glass of a single malt whiskey that some kind soul bought me because he saw a guy sneak behind me and steal my parking spot after I had pulled a wild "U"-ey to have it, and he felt bad for me, and then an IPA (whatever the heck that is) on cask. I love whatever they have on cask at the time - the Maibock was a mistake. The could have old man-piss from the wall on cask and I would probably like it. So anyway I sooooo didn't feel like fighting with the guy over the parking space and he came up kinda all ruffled while I was still sitting in the car...and I thought look, this man is in some way, shape or cosmic form, my brother. With all this war BS why should I fight him over this space. So I told him that. Anyhoo, gonna re-read your peeing difficulty post now, out loud, to my girlfriend. Which brings me to another question..I keep seeing the previews to this new "Troy" flick with Brad Pitt. Why oh WHY?? is he putting on a fake Brit accent to do this??? How SMARMY!!!!!! LOL!!!!! I won't be able to watch the movie just because of that! ay conyo! ok, bye Em .....--- tantra-apso wrote: > I didn't take your email as negative, wasn't sure what you thought. > Now i > know! > bw > colin > http://www.btinternet.com/~tantraapso/ ===== ........... I totally agree. Lucy, I get such strong images and feelings from your writing, and I'd like to read more. You evoke all these feelings without once getting overly sentimental. You really MUST get these things published. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 2004 18:36:16 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Joni in the new RS (or out of it as the case may be) I succumbed & bought RS for the plane ride... Joni was also mentioned by Rosanne Cash in her piece on Janis: "if Joni Mitchell gave me the idea that a woman could write about her life in a public forum, Janis gave me the idea that a woman could live a wild life and put that out there in a public forum, too." On the other hand, Britney Spears in her piece on Madonna wrote: "Madonna was the first female pop star to take control of every aspect of her career and to take responsibility for creating her image, no matter how much flak she might get." I guess if you don't consider Joni a pop star which in many ways I think she was. Perhaps for some, history begins in the 1980's. It just means consentual sex of the bar-pickup variety. It's a bit similar to a slang term "t`ts and @ss". That's just a 20-something, unrefined, male take on women in tight or skimpy clothes.
