When I was in high school the album "Todd" was getting a lot of turntable time, at least within my group of friends. One particular friend used to mime "I Think You Know," which was very funny to me, at least when I had had a few tokes. Very brave of you to 'fess up on that, Em! I hated Afternoon Delight when it was released! Now I can probably sing along to it with the best of them! Chevy Van, too. Funny how we change, huh? > Life remains weird, and I'm thinking it remains good. I'm thinking you're absolutely right on both counts, Em! I'll start by saying that i do agree that Joni is a must be in any greatest artist list. But what, on earth, is so wrong with Madonna? Nothing's wrong with Madonna, and if the list was the 50 greatest geniuses of self-promotion, then she should definitely be on it. When Madonna first hit MTV with "Like A Virgin" I was telling people she was good and she was going to make an impact. My peers were into The Grateful Dead and Bob Marley, so you can imagine the looks I got. I like alot of her stuff, the Ray of Light album, the big band stuff on Dick Tracy is cool, lots of great hits...but she is this incredible organizer, getting the best record producers, songwriters, ad execs, etc. The end result is often excellent, but it is manufactured somewhat in the Monkees/Spice Girl sense, and I am fine with that, but I would not put her in the top 50 who have rocked. The top 500 for sure, but not ahead of Tori Amos, The Youngbloods, Rascals, Janis Ian, Country Joe and the Fish, Sons of Champlin, Fiona Apple, Pink Floyd, X, The Dead, The Pretenders, Zappa, etc. Certainly not ahead of Joni.
