Yes, this is what I was talking about. . . Our country (perhaps it is part of the human race in general) has destroyed lives, families, caused harm in countless ways. . . It's the "strong doing what they can and the weak doing what they must." What about the boy who lost his two arms during the US invasion in Iraq? And his parents were also killed. Did you hear about this? What about the man who lost 6 of his children during the invasion? Hear about this? just part of the story. . . And we were trying to do good. (?) What other injustices has the US caused? I would like to understand why are a target. It is no wonder that people who have been wronged try to achieve some form of justice. (even tho it is usually the wrong thing too.. . ) If you can't achieve justice in the courts then how does one attempt to achieve it? And yes, what Lucy said about general kharma. . . even if harm is not outwardly intended toward us, Kharma comes to us. . . ("Harm" in the word Kharma, I just noticed.) And then I think that terrorists are just groups who have less money and no "organized" army, etc. . . this doesn't make it right to "terrorize." Yet just because you have a military and a big arms budget, that doesn't make it necess. right to wage war either. So many will agree that "it is a sad world." But if each of us take a stand and speak out against any injustice (be it big or small) then at least we know we tried. I don't know all the answers. You know we've got to try. It includes many Irish musicians and a description of the socio-political setting of the songs. There's a link to the full listing at end of mail. It's worth a read, I think. 14. Joni Mitchell and the Chieftains - The Magdalene Laundries During the mid-nineteenth century Ireland became a more conservative place in many ways, including regarding sexual behaviour. In 1966 Oliver J Flanagan, a member of the Dail (parliament in Dublin) could say "Sex never came to Ireland until Teilifms Iireann* went on the air" (*the state television broadcasting agency, now RTI) - an obviously ludicrous comment but one which he felt he could state at the time. Severe penalties - including ostracism and social rejection - could be meted out to people, particularly women, who did not meet a very conservative sexual moral code. Women pregnant out of marriage, and others, could be sent to an institution like the Magdalene Laundries. The mistreatment of many women in such institutions, and of children sent to institutions by the state, has been a shocking discovery within the last decade or two. This song tells of some of the women in 'the Magdalene Laundry'. It's from the Chieftains' 'Tears of Stone' album and sung by North American singer Joni Mitchell. http://www.innatenonviolence.org/pamphlets/wrimusic.htm mike in barcelona np - Paul Brady - Arthur McBride ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Apr 2004 10:28:23 -0400 From: "Marianne Rizzo" Subject: Crosby. Some but not all of these people might be worthy of making this list on the merits - but they did not / could not - except arguably for Lennon and Presley - stand the test of time, which is one of the "hall of fame" criteria in virtually every other endeavor except R&R. Jim Morrison versus Joni Mitchell - police! I mean, puhhhleeeeeze >> I've just had a quick glance at the list on the RS website. It's basically another bleedin' list touting itself as definitive, part of the staple of all music magazines, and so subjective as to be meaningless - which is not to say that "one" doesn't enjoy them of course. One thing that grates on me when RS does this sort of thing is the air of self-importance. Does the article actually make clear what the list is supposed to represent? If it's most influential, then the presence of people like Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly and Fats Domino certainly makes sense; if it's about who's produced the greatest body of work, then it's impossible to quibble with Neil Young, the Stones, David Bowie, etc etc; if it's about the greatest pop stars, then I wouldn't for a moment dispute Madonna's right to be there. This list seems to be right old mixture, doesn't it? Joni's omission is ludicrous by pretty much any criteria. There are plenty of other omissions, but we'd all have our own. As to those who do make the cut, personally, I think the Doors are one of most overrated groups ever, so I'd happily drop them, along with Nirvana, who had moments of brilliance but were too patchy and short-lived. I also believe that had it not been for one song (you know the one I mean!), very few people would have heard of them. I find the inclusion of Simon & Garfunkel puzzling because I much prefer Paul Simon's solo stuff. Elton John looks out of place here. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. You make a couple of interesting points, Bob, about dead people. I think Janis Joplin is also greatly overrated, although who knows what she might have achieved had she lived? I think Pearl is easily her best work, and given that it was posthumous, maybe she would have got better and lived up to the hype. Without wishing to be controversial, I can't help thinking that it was because she was white that she gained the reputation she did. Death did cement the legend. I think this also true of Otis Redding, who although I do believe he was a great singer, I don't think he was *that* great. I was also very surprised to see that they mis-spelled Muddy Waters's surname! Carla Bruni (of whom I'd never heard until a few weeks ago) is an international supermodel, rich, beautiful, speaks three languages fluently, has a partner and a child, lives in one of the most exclusive parts of Paris. Not a bad life, all in all. Then she goes and makes a record. Will it be a soon-to-be forgotten fiasco like Naomi Campbell's, enabling us mere mortals to nod sagely to each other and proclaim with relief "phew, she's human after all"? Erm, no! It's a wonderful album: the songs (about half of which she wrote on her own, the rest being co-writes and a couple of covers) are delightful, with lyrics that alternate between sweetly romantic and kinda goofy. The arrangements are spare and elegant, the tunes catchy - and her voice is one of the sexiest I have ever heard, honestly! I think "Hejira", as it is, no need to change a thing in it, could make a great play for a single actress. The journey, the order of the songs, the main female charcter, the vividness of it all - it's such a great material for the stage.
