I now have only one funnybone (on my right handside) left. The tingling and numbness in my little and ring fingers of my left hand are not as bad as they were but still thers sometimes. It is only 5 weeks since surgery but already I am back at work and have just returned from 6 days in Central Australia at an observing faciity where I had 5 magnificent nights under the most beautiful southern skies playing with telescopes (some peoples jobs are good hey) Any way I have started to play my guitar again after nearly 3 months of sitting there watching it in the corner on a stand and only being able to polish it. I can at least play for 30 minutes before it gets a little sore. I go back for my 6 week check up this coming Thursday and I hope he says it will improve even more. At this stage I have no regrets for choosing the path I did with this. I did want to wait until I return from the US in May but it would have been much worse by then. So now I am getting ready for this years trip to LA for our conference and workshop down in Irvine. And Paz I will try to catch up with Kakki when I'm there. I will email her offline. But now that the cat is out of the bag, I will admit that I think it really sucks. Wow, I couldn't believe how bad it was. Thank God I could stream it on the net and hear it before I bought it, which I surely would have done as I have and love every other thing she's done, including her work with The Story. But she's really tanked with this one. Where are the interesting melodic twists? The depth of lyric? And let's face it, when you do a cover of "Fire & Rain" or an Alan Parsons song, it's safe to say that the old idea well has run dry. Hopefully, she can do the Phoenix-thang next time around, but I for one will approach her future work with much caution. And their cover is one of the few that (for me) improves upon Joni's recording of it. (Gasp! Crucify him! Give us Barrabas!) Of course, it's all opinion...but their rendition captures the essence of the song and the difference in their voices makes for a nice contrast as opposed to Joni's overdubs of her own voice. Plus the CMIARS version suffers (as does the whole record) with that lousy late-80's muddy-synth production. I still don't think it's a great song...and the Williamson- Near version exposes the stripped-down weaknesses of it (weak compared to Joni's typical composition). But in the context of Joni covers, it's a real breakthrough for American artists to acknowledge her 80's work. I can certainly relate to this as the first really good listen I gave to it, the first time I was really wowed by it, was on the deck at the beach. I was just kicked back about mid-morning, with a cup o' java, and I think I rewound the tape a couple of times to replay it. Whenever I hear it, I'm transported back to that beachhouse deck on that warm summer morning. I know exactly what you are talking about as I'm sure most on the list do, but you couldn't have put it into word any better. I also got that really strong feeling tonight while listening to my mix CD of some of my favourite Joni songs...I've slowly come to appreciate HEJIRA since first hearing it about 3 and a half years ago and I've always loved the mood/theme and lyrics to "Song For Sharon", but tonight it hit me with such power and I really got the whole thing musically! It really is one of those epic songs, but like none I've ever heard. The Toronto Sun in no way fits what one could describe as good journalism, but that's just my opinion. Their front page usually has a picture of a girl in a bikini with a headline about something horrendous that has happened somewhere in the world, leading one to believe that the chick in the bikini has something to do with that. And it's full of cruddy ads of all kinds. It does have one or two OK columnists, or at least it used to. I understand it has a good sports section, but I couldn't give a rat's ass about sports, so I wouldn't know. It's not aimed at anyone with any taste or discernment, but it's a bit above the "News of the World", for example. It's popular with subway and bus riders, mainly because of its tabloid format. Oh yeah, my ex-husband used to work for them but, in fairness to him, he hated it too. So, it wouldn't surprise me if anything they have on their site about Joni is less than stellar writing. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Mar 2004 17:48:26 -0500 From: "Kay Ashley" Subject: Kay Ashley at Columbia this Saturday the 3rd! Dearest Joni Listers, I am quickly breaking my lurkdom to let you know that I have a gig in NYC this week, and perhaps some of you in the vicinity would like to come (I would love to see you!). Details are below. I recently returned from nearly a month in India, and it was totally fabulous, and I literally took 2000 pictures with my digital camera. I can't wait for NE Jonifest this year (get me out of this city!!), and I can't wait to show you all the highlights of my trip on my intrepid laptop... :-) It was an amazing trip -- animals everywhere! And yes, it is true that the cows walk (and even sleep) in the middle of the road, and everyone goes around them... Patrick is now singing in TWO choirs -- can you believe it?! Ain't no way I'm letting him back out of a set at THIS year's fest.... Some exciting news: fellow lister and generally extraordinary human being David Lahm arranged my song "Eyes So Bright" for a cabaret show that he did with Gail Newman, and the song had its debut in their show on the 21st of this month at Danny's Skylight Room here in NYC. It was a thrill to realize that my song exists apart from myself, and David's arrangement was really beautiful -- very jazzy and actually pretty driving compared to my version. As you all know, I'm a totally crappy lister and should probably be kicked off for not reading & writing often enough, but I am so looking forward to seeing all the usual suspects at this year's fest, plus all the newcomers who will undoubtedly become usual suspects. I am especially happy that Kate and Jeff are coming back -- you were truly missed in 2003! Talk to me! :-) Love, Kay _________________ Hello Everyone! Just a quick reminder about my upcoming show at The Postcrypt Coffeehouse, which is in St. Paul's Chapel at Columbia University. This is my first full length show in this room, and I am so excited, I could just, well, whatever... This is a great, acoustically wonderful room -- so wonderful, in fact, that there is no PA system. Just brick walls and vaulted ceilings which naturally amplify sound. You gotta check this out. And you gotta come get your FREE KAYzoo. If you don't know what a KAYzoo is, well, there's only one way to find out... Joni was wearing a shimmering Pompeii red gown and antique costume jewelry, and immediately dazzled the crowd with songs and stories. The place was packed, and as Joni began there were still a lot of people milling around. A bar back dumped a load of ice into a large portable ice bucket, breaking the spell for a moment: Joni looked over and said: "Oooh, that sounds like a slot machine! Are we in Las Vegas?" The crowd roared with laughter and once again the spell galvanized. I have heard about this ongoing series of performance pieces, and I even met John Kelly at a party a couple of years ago, but I was not prepared for the overall effect: such fidelity and delicacy from one artist paying loving and imaginative tribute to another. And then there was the spectral Georgia O'Keefe, Joni's accompanist and sometime foil (played Zecca Esquibel). What I appreciated the most was the mix of songs, representing the span of her career, from STAS through Blue and THOSL to NRH. Very funny and very moving. The show will re-appear in May for two weekends, (May 14 & 15, and May 21 & 22) and is definitely worth seeing (again). 'paved paradise' was the reason that the first time i did an internet search, it was on 'joni mitchell' and it went to jonimitchell.com. so i've always appreciated john for that. i'd loved a number of john's other works before then, and had heard him close 'wigstock' the festival with his 'wigstock' the song many times. but 'paved paradise' rekindled the fire. so it was particularly good to hear the dates of his return to the fez: >The show will re-appear in May for two weekends, (May 14 & 15, and May 21 & 22) and since kay posted earlier about my choir activities, i get to announce that kay ashley and i are singing in the new york metro mass choir's spring concert (see http://metromasschoir.org/) on friday, may 14 in avery fisher hall at new york's lincoln center.
