She needed a very versatile producer to pull it off and she had that. He's given her an collection that it feels like a thrill ride with a brilliant driver rather than a hell ride with a psychotic. This was *NOT* an easy album to make. The best comparison I can make is to Ben Folds' songs which are also piano driven, have changing tempo and zany humor. She throws it fearlessly into HyperSpace though. Sincerely, Jim From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com [mailto:SCJoniGuy@aol.com] ...she sings in MANY different styles on this record, from eminem-style rap-hop to lounge jazz, and none of it sounds out of place. A very fresh voice. So if you're not nutty about the first track you sample, realize that it might be totally different from the rest of the disc. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Mar 2004 11:03:04 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Re: What is reality? NJC PC >Kate gave us a link to a New York Observer article which includes this line: "...the Clinton administration foiled the Millennium plot to blow up LAX..."...I have no recollection of anyone in LA currently posting offering a thank you to the Clinton administration. < I have been thinking this very same thing since reading about this. We in SoCal should be down on our knees thanking Clinton (okay I can hear the jokes coming!) & Clarke & anyone else involved in foiling that millennium attempt. We on the West Coast were so far removed from NYC & think we have no idea what it must have been like (even though I went back 5 months later to the site it was hard to grasp what that day must have been like BEING there...we heard Kay & Debra & Patrick & other's accounts firsthand, it was beyond understanding I think) Yes I think about this constantly ... It could have been here... I don't know how big the damage would have been... We are over 100 miles from LA but Jeff's oldest son & wife & daughter lived near the airport then... His youngest son was in LA at that time too & very near the airport (all of them in Manhattan Beach which is minutes away) ... Not to mention scores of other friends in the area. Our lives could be full of that very same tragedy that those who lost their loved ones in the WWC buildings now live with everyday. It would have been absolutely unbearable. It could have been here. I don't think I am a big ra ra Clinton person, he pissed me off several times with his lying & stupidity when it came to personal issues. But it is absolutely amazing to me (though I guess typical political posturing by the administration which is in damage control) to blame Clinton's administration for the terrorist attacks that happened on his watch without also giving credit to the ones that were thwarted. Yes I don't want to let a day go by without in some way recognizing what could have been. Thanks Vince for bringing this up as I have been thinking about it so much but haven't had the chance to express it. At this point Clarke is a hero to me. He was one of the few to stay in the WH on 9/11 because that was his job. That must have been very frightening knowing they could be a target. Remember how scared we all were, not knowing if there would be another attack somehow somewhere?. Anyone in the WH must have felt like a sitting duck. He is a hero to me because he told HIS truth. Anyone who slimes him for doing so to sell a book or get a job (right, like his laurels were not enough to live on for the rest of his days) or for being disgruntled (hello if you had critical info that you knew was important & your boss who was not as informed just ignored it, would you not be extremely frustrated? Would you not eventually call it quits after 30 years of working for presidents?) has a very weak argument & has forgotten the powerful bush PR attack machinery. Clarke is a hero because he knows what happens when people turn on the bush administration. Their name is dragged to the mud, their family is put at risk, etc. Most of all he is a hero because somehow he has retained a sense of honor that I really really miss in our political & business leaders. He said I'm sorry, he personally took some responsibility for 9/11. It used to be the captain of the ship would go down with it while everyone else got in the lifeboats, it used to be that those in charge said the buck stops here. I drove past a school last night where they have a big banner that says 'Character Counts' & a long list of honorable character traits. As I read them I thought what a disconnect there is between what we teach our kids & what we accept (or if not accept, see) in our leaders. NJC quitting cigs Colin asks: << btw, how is the not smoking going? well i hope. >> Fine, but it often makes me bitchy, as you can see! Seriously, though, quitting smoking may be the best thing I have ever done for myself. I felt noticeably better from about the second day on. When I quit I said to myself, "Okay, you can eat anything and everything you want. Just stop smoking and then deal with whatever weight you put on later." I did eat anything and everything, especially chocolate. And I put on 15 pounds very quickly and became fatter than I have ever been. Then, about a month ago, I started on the South Beach Diet and have lost 17 pounds so far! So, almost 4 months after the fact, I have quit smoking and I weigh 2 pounds less than when I stopped smoking. I am very happy about that. And to anyone who might be contemplating quitting, I say this: IF I CAN DO IT, ANYONE CAN! I WAS AS HOOKED AS CAN BE! Also, while I am up here accepting this nonsmoking Oscar, I would like to thank some JMDLers for helping me quit, namely -- in alphabetical order -- Ashara, Jody and Maggie. Each one of these ladies, along with other friends who have quit smoking, gave me some reason -- from inspiration to kicks in the pants - -- to quit. One more thing . . . not smoking has not changed my behavior in any significant way. If I am bitchy it's because of my family is once again in their own personal "Murphy retrograde" -- as always! -- and not because I have done something very positive to improve my health. I'm not sure if you're talking about using ebay or some other outlet, but if you intend to do that it'll be almost a MUST to use Paypal. All you need to open an account is a credit card or a bank account - and don't worry about getting ripped-off, Paypal is very secure. By having a Paypal account, your buyers will be able to pay you instantly from anywhere. Just this week, I sent Paypal payments to Germany and the UK and got a couple from around the world as well. As Catherine says, it's not a free service, but it's not very costly either. If you send somebody a payment via Paypal it costs nothing. If you receive a payment via Paypal, you pay a small (5% or less) fee. The convenience of not having to wait for checks/money orders, cash, etc. and then depositing them in a bank account is well worth it. And with a few clicks of the mouse you can send money from your Paypal account to your bank account. This also costs nothing. Hope that answers the question.
