They usually already know what they want when they come in. But as you said, it isn't a genre they ask for, but more a specific song or artist. So your idea might be just the ticket. Colin Riley is a well-respected contemporary 'classical' composer; Tim Whitehead is a great jazz saxophonist (played with Loose Tubes). The concept of the collection was to invite contemporary composers to rearrange favourite songs, which are sung by various jazz singers. Jenni Roditi selected All I Want and gives it a radical rearrangement. Alone of all the arrangements on this CD, the arranger is also the singer. All starts reasonably familiarly - the string section, piano and sax combination making you think, 'well, I guess this might be how the song could have sounded if Joni had held it over until For The Roses'. But then, suddenly, the arrangement turns disturbingly stacatto and Roditi's voice fractures into a kind of Central Asian ullulation on the words 'dance with me'! The serenity of the strings returns (really beautiful actually...) but when she reaches the words 'how you hurt me, baby', the ullulating returns and she sounds like someone truly demented by her love. So... its a genuinely interesting interpretation and I think you'll either love it or hate it... and I love it... I think! In the CD notes Roditi says, 'Joni Mitchell's distinctive style had a big influence on my own early song writing, then I went through all the academic stuff as a composer, then landed in a North Indian music singing class, via various therapeutic voice workshops. Elements of all these things can be traced in the arrangement. Joni's songwriting, lyrics and vocals deserve continued celebration and should in my opinion rank as highly as the Beatles in the history of popular music' ...so, she's one of us! Oh, and inexplicably she changes the lyric to, 'I want to get up and jump, I want to wreck my stockings in some juke box dump'! Other songs covered include Paperback Writer, Over the Rainbow, Who Will Buy? (from 'Oliver'!), Memphis Tennessee, Love Action (yes, the Human League song!) and, my 2nd favourite on early listening, a gorgeous version of Peter Gabriel's 'Here Comes The Flood'. I bought the CD online from www.jazzcds.com (12 UK pounds) and it arrived the next day - why don't you? Even if the Joni proves not to your taste you have to respect the intention and the CD is so varied that there is bound to be a favourite on there for you. Raveen is a brand name of a line of hair care products. This one isn't in the JMDL Glossary yet but it seems to be a "curl relaxer" and/or a conditioner. I don't know if they also made a curl enhancer, or if Joni mis-applied the word (unlikely!), or it was Mitchell-esque droll irony to call straight hair "Raveen curls". In the context of the song, it is about a preocupation with fleeting and youthful appearance. Can someone add to this? Dylan, the most important thing to get from this is that the printed lyrics for "Harry's House" (on the LP, on the CD, on the songbook) are wrong. I don't know why the copy-written words were so often wrong. I think someone here said that in the old days, artists turned over the master tapes and someone transcribed the words to be copy-written. That they were wrong about "raven curls" is undeniable. That they were reproduced wrong again in THE COMPLETE POEMS AND LYRICS is another shame. Speaking of that book, the first song lyrics in that book have at least 2 errors. Check it out. Joni's talking about leaves as if they had feelings. The book says: "When the leaves fell on the ground Boy winds came around, (and) pushed them face down in the snow." Almost everyone thinks she sang and meant "bully" as in "Bully winds came around and pushed them face down in the snow". Later, she talks about stoking the fire. The book says, "Apply the fire with kindling now." Isn't it more likely that she sang the contraction for "I will"? "I'll ply the fire with kindling now," means she's bartering some sticks in exchange for warmth. I didn't discover these for myself. I found them here on the JMDL, just as you have, today. All the best, Jim L'Hommedieu >There's a particular line in "Harry's House": "Skinny black models with raving curls". I was so bummed that Chelsea Morning was unplayable amoung others. It wasn't until I got on line, founded my own discussion list and then had a lister name Jimmy from Florida invite me to join the JMDL where I then found all those wonderful tunings. I can't believe how many years have gone by... I have been one of the biggest Joni Fan in the world until I discovered all of you..... Hugs, Debi aka Catgirl, Deb, Debi, Debra...Michael, you gottem' all! Michael Paz wrote: OH MY Catgirl, Deb, Debi, Debra, Ms Worthington (if your nasty)- Where the feck have you been??? My gawd it's good to see you back. Where are you now? Are you in some hotel room? Does it have a view? Fill us in with the missing years. What have you been up to? Are you still playing a lot? Are you going to a Jonifest near you soon? Come on they have ignored you on Et and all the other celebrity stalker shows. Still remembering the incredible jam we had on my back porch with the gang esp. "Hit The Road Jack" (no offence Neilson really!!!!) featuring the Muller on spontaneaous vocals. Speaking of which have you heard Jack Neilson's CD? The Pazfest Vol 1 & 2 CD's. Debi David Sadowski wrote: I'm watching an episode of Magnum, PI on the Hallmark Channel right now... an episode called The Look, and they are using 60s/70s hits throughout the episode on the soundtrack. The gimmick is that Magnum is listening to an "oldies" radio station. For financial/rights reasons, all the songs heard are recreations, and they aren't bad. The songs I've heard include Dock of the Bay, Satisfaction, She's Not There, Let It Be, and... You Turn Me On (I'm a Radio)! And it's not half bad, the vocalist had talent... the arrangement includes a harmonica. *It's all a dream, she has awoke* Yahoo!
