Seems to me you're experiencing the "out of sight out of mind" thing. It happens to everyone, with today's hectic schedules. Also, you see the glass half-empty because you don't get the attention and care from as many people to whom you've shown care. I think that's the story of all the "givers" in this world. The "half-full glass" way to approach it IMO is the old jewish saying: "if you've got 1 true friend then you've accomplished something". Then you may have positively affected many more people who actually can't find time to get in touch with you, but this doesn't mean they've totally forgotten you. Hope this helps and that your health improves. Laurent ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Feb 2004 20:34:41 +1100 From: ash Subject: Re: Try this with your online friends. Did Anyone Ever Tell You, How Important You Make Others Feel? Somebody out here is Smiling About Friendship, That is so Real. Did Anyone Ever Tell You, Many Times, When They were Sad. Your E-mail made Them Smile a bit, In Fact It made Them Glad! For the Time You Spend Sending Things, And Sharing whatever You Find. There are No Words to Thank You, But Somebody Thinks You're Fine! Did Anyone Ever Tell You Just How Much They Like You? Well, My Good "Online " Friend Today I am Telling You! I HOPE I GET THIS BACK I believe that without friends we'd be missing out on a lot!!! Don't be confused by friends and acquaintances, there is a difference! Because I care about friends. It's National Care Week . . . and you get to end messages to all your friends telling them that you care about them and make them feel good about themselves and if they write back (just once) then that means that they care about you too. BUT, you have to send it right now!! Send it to everyone you care about and if they send it back. That means they care too. But don't just send it back, send it on to everyone you know. I am not depressed. I have not stopped doing what i do and in fact do more than before now. I am still knitting away, groomoing dogs, typing, walking, going away etc. One becasue life is for living, and 2 becasue not doing these thongs makes no difference to the pain. Pain is something that has always scared me and still does but amazongly I can cope well with it. A lot of the time, I am not even conscious fo the pain tho it is there all the time. It sounds like one of those nerve things, like what Don from Oz has (the ulnar thing), or the carpal tunnel syndrome (repetitive strain injury) that I (and numerous others) have - but on a grander scale. I don't know how the waiting list thing works there in the UK, but is there a central registry somewhere, or could your doc check around, so that maybe you could get the MRI done sooner, if you were willing to travel further to get it? ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Feb 2004 12:54:27 +0000 From: Garret Subject: Barangrill We've talked about FTR before, but i don't recall too many talks about Barangrill. i guess some people might think it doesn't warrant the conversation we have afforded FTR itself or Little Green or magdalene laundries, but let's see.... So, i had interpreted this song in quite a straightforward way. Joni in a restaurant or "diner" or what have you as she is travelling, not wanting to be recognised. Perhaps she's a little envious of the more simple (ie less complicated) life that the waitresses et al seem to have. This is consistent with the more general themes of the FTR album. she is feeling the "crazy you get from too much choice"; they don't have the anxiety she is arguably feeling. She gets nervous becasue she thinks the waitress has found out who she is by "teh second refill". (for a long time i thought this was "secondary feel, and thought it was highlighting a very perceptive nature of the waitress that something was up with this woman... you know that feeling you might get that someone might be famous??), but then joni realises that no, she's just in to do her job and is no more concerned with this nervous blonde than with anyone else. this may be because she is part of the service industry or it may be beacuase she is preoccupied with her own life (an interesting reflection of joni who is very obviously preoccupied with herself). i don't neceassarily understand the function of the truck driver. any ideas? the man at the gas pumps gives joni something of a For Free moment perhaps? he is jolly and singing because it's christmas. he's full of character or soul (at one time i thought his making up his own tune was filling her ears full of his problems , about his job for example. this really isnt uncommon is it? how often have you said "how are you?" to a barman or somesuch that you know and he says something like "so, so. would be a bit better if i wasnt here!" ? But i prefer to think he's singing and joni wants to stay and listen; she's a little transfixed perhaps. but at the same time she needs to get to her destination. and furhtermore, she is feeling the pressure and paranoia of being in the public eye so really just wants to get moving. and then she realises that his just being himself has given her that little big of freedom to be herself, to lose the drive to not be seen and to feel slightly less anxous. and then i get a bit lost. is barangrill a place? i had thought it was a bar and grill, but i just can't make that make any sense. So what is this song about? It's not a torch song (still unsure what *exactly( that is, but this aint it:-) GARRET np - Barangrill Barangrill by Joni Mitchell Three waitresses all wearing Black diamond earrings Talking about zombies and Singapore slings No trouble in their faces Not one anxious voice None of the crazy you get From too much choice The thumb and the satchel Or the rented Rolls-Royce And you think she knows something By the second refill You think she's enlightened As she totals your bill You say "show me the way To Barangrill" Well some say it's in service They say "humble makes pure" You're hoping it's near Folly 'Cause you're headed that way for sure And you just have to laugh 'Cause it's all so crazy Her mind's on her boyfriend And eggs over easy It's just a trick on you Her mirrors and your will So you ask the truck driver On the way to the till But he's just a slave To Barangrill The guy at the gaspumps He's got a lot of soul He sings Merry Christmas for you Just like Nat King Cole And he makes up his own tune Right on the spot About whitewalls and windshields And this job he's got And you want to get moving And you want to stay still But lost in the moment Some longing gets filled And you even forget to ask "Hey, Where's Barangrill?" - ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Feb 2004 14:24:21 +0100 From: Emiliano Subject: (Fwd) phony lakota? Grey Owl (played by Pierce Brosnan) was one of the earliest known environmentalist (1930s). Because he was "Canadian" he was basically unknown here in the States. But, people in Canada and especially in England went crazy over his writings. He wrote about being a trapper and life in the North Woods, about living with the Ojebwa (he was adopted by them), and about his beloved beavers. I was introduced to Grey Owl by a Canadian buddy of mine who had bought the VHS tape in Montreal. If you haven't seen the movie get it. And, watch the two "shorts" afterwards featuring the real Grey Owl (Pierce does not resemble Grey Owl in the least!). I heard a story 4 years ago by another author featuring Grey Owl. It's a true story. It's seems that he (Grey Owl) ventured down to N. Dakota to buy a bird dog from a breeder (the author?) there. They were walking their dogs towards evening when a blizzard hit. One of the dogs was lost, so Grey Owl ventured out onto an ice covered pot hole lake to see if the dog had fallen through the ice. The author said that all of a sudden Grey Owl vanished through the ice, but without leaving a splash. I'll leave it at that--I don't want to spoil the story. Tom Rush pioneered the modern singer/songwriter era with his 1965 album "The Circle Game." Since then, he's been known equally for his classic songs ("No Regrets") and for his discovering and popularizing the music of Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Jame Taylor, and dozens of other now-famous artists. Tom has been going strong now these 40 years, as can be heard on the recent Warner/Reprise "Best Of Tom Rush" compilation CD. Tom's special guests will be CommonbonD (http://www.commonbond.web), a multiple-award-winning duo whose soulful blues/folk style often brings comparisons to the Indigo Girls or Bonnie Raitt. Tickets are $20 and can be had on-line at http://www.sanctuaryconcerts.org. Any remaining tickets will be sold or at the door beginning at 6PM the day of the show. I just think it's impossible to really classify Joni....I mean she uses so many different influences and styles in her music, I couldn't personally think of where to put any of her albums.  They should just create a new section for artists like her.....Does anyone agree?  Rick >> Hi, Rick, I have more of a problem trying to find out what section someone is in when I go to a music store to buy a Christmas Present for someone; I mean, I've usually got a list with a name and some album titles but is it "New Age", "Pop", "Country", etc.??? Half the time, I'm not even aquainted with the artist or group so I don't have a clue where to find them. Asking the help usually isn't much... ah, help, so I have to use the computer aid in the store. Maybe the music store should just list everything alphabetically from A to Z and not worry about the catagory. After all, how many people go to a place like Borders music dept and say, "hummmm... I think I'll buy some new age music today"? Kenny B ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Feb 2004 22:12:49 -0500 From: Subject: Re: Re: Larry speaks of Joni This is a bit off-topic but at least it is not a rant. :) Speaking of microphones, it turns out that Peter Frampton is balding and living in Cincinnati. When he talked about a basement-made album he released last year, he talked about his treasured Telefunken U-47 (is that right?). He also related this: When they remodeled his basement, they jacked up one wall and removed cinder blocks, forming a 20' wide, 4' high slot. He said he had to leave the house because he couldn't bear to watch when they loaded his MIXING BOARD, WIDTH-WISE THROUGH THE BASEMENT WALL! That's eccentric but is it as eccentric as Karin and Linford who had a spinet piano installed in the 3rd floor attic to make room for the Steinway on a lower floor? Is it as eccentric as the inner city music fan who is so poor he drives a 16 year old car, yet has each of his 130 pound speakers sitting on concrete blocks in his living room? Guilty.
