Was listening to June T on my cd player on the way into work. I love her and she was amazing in concert. As a celt, of course you know what I am going to say next, but June makes it clear on the liner notes about much of the music on 'Hooves' being of the Scottish origin. Small point but dear to me. Do you have Rosa Mundi? Her version of Rabbie Burns's 'My luve is like a red red rose' is the best Ive heard (better than Eddi Reader's..sorry Simon..domestic joke) and could bring a tear to the proverbial. She also does a great version of Roses of Picardy...my granny used to sing that in memory of her brother who was killed in the trenches in WW1. My spine tingles all over...like Joni when she talked about Rachmaninov and Piaf. Listers...Ive seen June's albums on sale in the US too and of course you can order them online. There is a 'best of' album which is worth having though its is some 5 years old now, so no recent stuff on it. A new 'best of' album came out last year but isn't as far as Im concerned...just the record company reycling... Have a good British day..lol...cheerio ..lol..and other cliches..actually Glasgoe people say cheerio a lot ! It would be interesting to know how culturally bound an appreciation of June Tabor is, has she a peculiarly "English" appeal? (I used to think that about Richard Thompson, but I know he is very popular in USA? What I'm driving it is that to me in a way Echo of Hooves is June exploring the heritage of English music while on BSN Joni tries something similar with a vastly different American heritage - and I can enjoy both, and they both "work". A few years back, June crossed a few boundaries by making an album with the Oyster Band, called (I think) Freedom and Rain, which is worth checking out if anyone is interested.< < Hi Mike, I can't speak from an American perspective, being in the UK. However, many years ago, I was at the Sidmouth folk festival and wandered into a tent where June was singing. At that time, I was very young and my main interest, I have to admit, was in young male guitarists preferably playing and singing in a contemporary style. Unaccompanied females singing traditional songs did not have an attraction for me. Nevertheless I was completely bowled over by her performance and have never forgotten it mainly because it was so brave and sincere and her voice was so stunning you just couldn't ignore her. "Awesome" probably does some it up best. I love the way she is completely her own person and the fact that she has survived in such an unpopular area of British culture simply because she is so good. I imagine that character will come across wherever she performs rather in the way the Portuguese singer, Mariza's does. I was similarly inpressed with Joan Baez when I saw her a couple of weeks ago. Long may they all continue. Regards Jacky ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Feb 2004 03:21:05 -0800 (PST) From: Jennifer Faulkner Subject: [none] Hey guys! Gary asked about how I first got introduced to Joni. Well, Laura is nuts about her, and told me about her and played some songs on her guitar for me. I love The Circle Game, too, but right now I can't get enough of Both Sides Now, which my husband's English class analyzed in lecture, one time. Have you guys seen Love Actually? It's so emotional when the character who is a Joni fan figures out that her husband is cheating on her, and goes to the bedroom and the final part of Both Sides Now is playing. "and if you care, don't let them know, don't give yourself away". Then she wipes her face dry and goes out to the family room again like it's all okay. Jennifer Yahoo! "The Circle Game" was my introduction to Joni via the Ian & Sylvia version (yes, it seems a bit bouncy & dated today) which was on their 1966 *so Much For Dreaming* album. I was eleven and had been playing guitar since I was eight and I learned it immediately. When I played it for my mother, it made her cry, and after that she would often ask me to play it, and would cry every time. In late 2000, right after my beloved wife had died, I spent Thanksgiving with my sister, her husband and my niece (who was eight years old then). My sister & I were singing old songs we'd sung as kids as I played her guitar, and we sang "The Circle Game" getting Sarah (my niece) to sing along on the chorus. My own son was 20 at the time, and since he was spending a semester abroad in Germany, he hadn't been able to get back for his stepmother's memorial service, though I was going to pick him up in Atlanta the next day. Also my parents had both died, my mother in 1990 and my father in 1998. Well, this time I was the one who couldn't get through the song without crying, and Sarah came and our her hand on my shoulder to comfort me. I think I truly and profoundly understood the song at that moment. Just another way of Joni being ahead of her time, I suppose. It was rare in its day; now I'm sure that poor Tipper & her crew have given up on trying to sticker every CD out there with such dangerous content that will surely warp my fragile little mind. But back to Circle Game, which is indeed a wonderful song. It's really presented a challenge in the covers arena; if it's sung properly as Joni intended compositionally, it's a 5-minute song, so it would not be a likely radio hit even with its catchy melody & chorus. Some folks like Ian & Sylvia and Buffy Sainte-Marie tried to put it in high gear and make it a 3-minute song, and it just loses so much in the transition, at least in my opinion. To Tom Rush's credit, he recorded it as he heard Joni play it. Agnes Chan, a pop singer from Hong Kong, recorded it shortly after (or maybe even before) Joni did and spawned quite a few other Asian vocalists that followed suit. I remember the note I rec'd from Mae Robertson, who covered the song on oneof her CD's, and she said that while she was sitting on her front porch working out the guitar part, her son came out, car keys in hand, and took off in the car and the meaning of the song just poured over her (Joni songs tend to do that donchaknow) and she just had a good cry. Well, now I'm blabbering, but one more thought about the song. Even though it's not really written as such, I always feel like when the song starts I'm looking through the eyes of the child, seeing the stars, the dragonflies, and experiencing that wonder. In the next verses, I feel like I'm looking through the eyes of the parent, watching my child move through those seasons, and by the end of the song I feel as though I'm looking through the eyes of a philosopher, commenting on the whole experience and wondering why those childhood years are so fleeting. Also a belated welcome to Tom & Jennifer! It would be a simple matter for her to buy a fresh salmon from a local commercial fisherman who most probably would be a neighbor of hers. Or, it would even be simpler for her to catch herself own salmon off of those rocks that she's standing on naked in the fold out of FTR. Remember, she likes to do things for herself. It would be easy to cast a spoon out off those rocks and catch coho and chinook salmon, steelhead and coastal cutthroat trout, lingcod, piling perch and rockfish. Besides, fishing is very meditative, which is the main reason she goes up to her camp in the first place. I had a great time and everything; it was great to see everyone, but that orange/green lighting combination was deadly! Things are better at the Full Moon, beginning with lighting and ending with 4 days worth of music (which one of my nieces called "MOO-gie" when she was 2.) I like it so much I am going to play it right now.** Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did, Michael. It's always the right time for that record - it's great on a road trip too. It was a real fluke that I ever heard it, because I was in Raleigh listening to the college radio station from Duke which I hardly ever did. They played "Rainbow In Your Eyes" (a Leon Russell tune) and I just was in love. Had to find out who that singer was and what record that was, bought it the next day. It was a double LP and they had to squinch a little out of it to cram it on 1 cd, but they did. Some of the finest jazz singing I've ever heard in terms of his scatting. You're right about his studio stuff - they tried to make a Johnny Mathis out of him and his studio records (his post-Rainbow ones anyway) always felt flat.
