Fortunately, we've been able to transition to other industries so unemployment has not been a major issue. Hi Bob! When I think of Joni, I think of her as a continuum, like she's the same today and tomorrow and yesterday... but changing. Change is something I've had a hard time embracing at times. Once when I was having dealing with the death of a loved one, my husband introduced me to the song Judy Collins (sorry Kevin!!) sang that goes: "Everything must chaaaaange, nothing and no one stays the same, everything must chaaange, nothing and no one staaays the same. Except rain falls from the clouds, sun lights up the skies, humming birds flyyyyyyyy." There is something that stays the same about Joni despite the change, some kind of exception. It really is neat to be able to have grown up with Joni. She is like a big sister to me in a sense. I look up to her and have learned from her and feel loved by her even though we've never met. After being tired of dating troubled guys, I prayed the prayer in her song "The Same Situation", "I said 'send me somebody who's strong, and somewhat sincere" and then I met the beautiful man I eventually married... also a Joni fan, a gift from God. Through her song, my big sister told me to pray so I did; it was very natural, and the answer to the prayer has been coming up on 19 years of marital bliss including 3 beautiful children. Sometimes I get very enthusiastic about thanking God for Joni because she is such an awesome expression God's love. I know people on the list call her a goddess sometimes, well, I have to agree with that in part, because God very obviously expresses the divine through her. She glorifies God in the way she brings so much love and truth into the world through her songs. I hope and pray Joni stays healthy so we can enjoy her presence for many years to come. And, when the time comes for her to fly with the seagulls.... I hope she will be able to know the depth of my appreciation for her then because I could never adequately convey it in this life. It was just wild, and I'm laughing about it now, but at the time, it was very hurtful. It happened when I was at an all time low, when my mother was dying of cancer so I was really at a loss for dealing with it. But, I have a good support system of friends, especially my husband. Basically, it was a witch hunt. They looked for demons that weren't there... but they saw demons anyway and acted accordingly. Ouch! I started praying for St. Joan of Arc's intercession daily back then! I don't know why people sometimes look for or see bad (real or imagined) in others rather than good. I know from my experience as an alcoholic that my perceptions can be very wrong... in fact they are usually more wrong than right. It is the reason why alcoholics need AA meetings for life. In these meetings, we talk about things going on in our lives to see what others think of these things... to gain perspective. We share our experience, strength, and hope. We have a sponsor to talk with about the details of our lives every day so they can help us detect when our perceptions are off and make suggestions accordingly. These misperceptions are what lead us to drink or to insanity depite being dry if we don't talk them through and sort them out. I think all people do this misperceiving to a degree, but I know as an alcoholic that I do it royally. The AA solution is to realize one's perceptions can be off and to overcome one's own ego. The ego wants to be "right." There is a priceless question we ask each other in AA: "do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?" I can waste so much time and miss the joy when I'm trying to be "right." I find it so much more rewarding to realize I'm only guessing from my own perspective and to let go and focus on the beauty in life rather than on what seems right and what seems wrong to me. Singing Joni's song "Sweet Bird" helps me with this. And, so does Kate Bennett's song "Dangerous Wind."
