Well, I could probably list 49 reasons why Covers #49 is so cool, but I'll hold off. I will however thank my uber-helper John van Tiel for his contributions and help with this one. Lots of fun & nice selections this time 'round, and here's what's on it: 1. Catherine Moon - The Beat Of Black Wings: Finding a CMIARS cover is always a nice surprise, and even better when it's my favorite track from that record and better still when it's a nice version. Catherine is an indie from NJ. 2. The End Phenomena - Both Sides Now: This is the one that I've already mentioned, Emile Pandolfi & his UK combo from 1970 or so. 3. Matthew Kern - A Case Of You: A lovely instrumental version. 4. Hajime Chitose - Blue: I don't suppose many of you will care for this one but it totally enthralls me. The acoustic guitar is beautiful and she uses her voice like a bamboo flute, with a fluttering that is jarring at first but rewards repeated listenings. 5. Michel Clement & His Orchestra - The Circle Game: Muzaky version from a movie soundtrack compilation. 6. Maria Joao & Mario Laghina - Both Sides Now: Love this one, they are Portuguese and this version has a nice samba swing to it. 7. Bill Hurley - (You're So Square)Baby, I Don't Care: Fairly straightforward Elvis dupe, except for the echo vocals which sound like a ribbiting frog! Bay-buh Bay-buh! 8. Nazareth - This Flight Tonight: The classic version of Nazareth's cover was from 1973's "Loud & Proud". For whatever reason, they recorded it again in 1991 and released this alternative version on "No Jive". 9. Sheena Easton - Raised On Robbery: Taken from her concert video, Miss "Sugar Walls" herself turns in a rockin' take. 10. Harry Belafonte - Both Sides Now: This recording was also taken from video, though it was not a Harry video, it was Petula Clark's TV special - famously controversial in its day (1968) because Harry (a black man) & Pet (a white woman) HELD HANDS while they sang a duet! The horror! I'm sure that my Mom saw this special since she had the hots for Harry. 11. De Kast & Venice - Woodstock: A live version taken from a concert in Hooland with about 100,000 folks in attandance! Basically a cover of the CSNY version - very upbeat. 12. Carolee Mayne - River: A Seattle vocalist who sings primarily Christian music, Mayne contributed this cover to a fundraiser CD. Here it at: http://www.caroleemayne.com/con_mp3downloads.cfm 13. Ralph Towner/Gary Burton - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: I love the combination of vibes and acoustic guitar, very relaxing, and this is a lovely take of the Mingus melody. 14. Eric Miller & His Orchestra - Both Sides Now: For your elevator-listening pleasure... 15. Danilo Perez - Fiddle And The Drum: This is hot off the presses, just came out last year. Danilo is a wonderful jazz pianist from Panama, this track features Lizz Wright on vocals. Mmm Mmm good! 16. Cindy Keller Wittenberg & Tracy Dietrich - Michael From Mountains: A flute & piano duo from Pennsylvania. Very pretty, as you would imagine. Hear a sample: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/wittenberg 17. Tricia Lundeen - Morning Morgantown 18. Tricia Lundeed - The Circle Game: Trish is from Minnesota, don't know much more than that, except to say that these are from her mid-seventies LP and she has a very nice voice! 19. Citizen Helene - Little Green: A live version from her 2002 EP, Helene is a Dutch singer. Hear this one at: http://www.atease.org/citizenhelene/music.htm 20. The Rainbeaux - Both Sides Now: Eaux my! Doesn't this sound psychedelic? Too bad it bleauxs. And there you have it, another month, another tribute to the finest composer of our lifetime! Sometimes weird, sometimes wacky, sometimes wonderful, and always worth a spin! Just let me know if you'd like a copy, and I'll make sure it happens. Euros, contact Mr. van Tiel for your fix. And you'll be glad to know that Puxatawny Bob saw his shadow, so that means at least 6 more volumes of covers! :~) Bob NP: The Cure, "Purple Haze" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Feb 2004 11:27:39 -0500 From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: article Jon, you can find it here: http://www.rocksbackpages.com/news/2501_hoskyns_joni.html Or go to Google, type in "Queen Joni Approximately" and you can get it that way as well. And, I am not 100% sure on how she feels, but I am sure she would cringe at being referred to as a goddess. Remember, she said that when she is put in the public eye (under heavy scrutiny) she has a tendency to wobble on the "pedestal" of hero worship (and sure, she is about the only living "hero" I have), and it makes her very uncomfortable to say the least. But, she just wants to be part of the "gang". I think that if we want her to come to Jonifest she needs to feel like she's a member of the group and not the center of attention. Remember, after all it is her ideas of freedom, individual responsibility (towards ourselves and others) and self reliance that she has sparked in us through her music which is what the festival is about (isn't it?). And as some members of the group already know, I truely want to meet her and talk to her. With today's technology, you can take any of the video trees and make DVD's out of them, or have someone do it for you. Also, on ebay, there's a guy who sells DVD's of Joni's document of her '83 tour 'Refuge Of The Roads'. He burns it from a video laser disc to DVD. This will be officially released on DVD in the future (no idea when) so maybe you want to wait until then. As for "Just Like Me", the answer is a resounding YES. Last year I rounded up all the early unreleased Joni songs I've accumulated on various recordings, as well as the duets, stuff she put on other records, etc. and made a 2-CD collection called "Joni - Off The Record". It's a great way for newbies like yourself to gather up some rare unreleased stuff! Here's what's on it: Joni Mitchell ~ Off The Record Volume 1: Early Originals 1. Play Little David, Play 2.
