A guy in New York State named Simon has been building a list of Joni's appearances for a loooong time. A JMDLer in good standing, he supplied this list (and lots of other stuff) to the producers of the PBS special on Joni (now available for purchase on VHS & DVD) and in return he is in the production credits. (COOL!) I'm not sure if he actually set out to be an Archivist but he sure is one now. Anyway, Simon's list of appearances is on the official web site: www.jonimitchell.com If you click on "Appearances" in the left hand column, then scroll and click on "GO TO JONI APPEARANCE CHRONOLOGY", it takes you to: http://www.jonimitchell.com/appearances.html There you'll find the most exhaustively collected, and meticulously updated list available. If you go to 1976, and scroll to "The Spectrum Theatre", you'll find 2-16-76. That's the way we US residents say "16 February". Anyway, that date is a clickable link taking you to a review at: http://www.jonimitchell.com/PhonographRecord476.html It answers you question about personnel. It says (in part): "With saxophonist David Luell having replaced Tom Scott, the L.A. As anticipation grew to fever pitch, Joni entered the spotlight. With the Express supporting..." I agree that it was a GREAT show. - ---- On the other hand, I have to disagree with you about DJRD. It is Joni's 'white album'. Joni's 'TUSK'. Joni's 'OHIO'. I can't imagine cutting out "Overture" or "Paprika Plains" to make a single-LP release for example. I *DO* think DJRD "plays" better as 4 sides on vinyl because PP is a single entity that way. You can turn up the volume for that side and the closing bits where "the band plugs in again" get suitably very loud indeed. I think DJRD is in a string of 8 or 9 consecutive albums that I think are essential Joni. My opinion is that she was able to line up many more great solo albums than any of the solo Beatles. Not only did she write it all but she also self-produced almost all of it. Enough. All the best, Jim Bruce said, >Not having ever seen Joni live, and really only knowing the official live recordings -- MOA & S&L -- it's a fascinating bridge between the two. I've just been thinking about this after Yoko Ono has had her work remixed to great success recently, perhaps this would get similiar recognition for Joni - if she approves them, that is, but if she approved of the BYT mixes she'll probably agree to this. Your NZ accent is so good, Bob! Speaking of good films, the kids and I went to see "In America" yesterday. This is by Jim Sheridan who did "My left foot" and "In the name of the father", among others. It's a story about an Irish family who moves to New York, where the father is trying to find a job as an actor. It has two of the most beautiful and engaging (without being annoyingly precious or precocious, as so many child actors are) little girls (who are sisters in real life) I've ever seen. It's one of those films that is by no means a blockbuster. It has an actual plot!!! You will laugh, you will cry. You may have a hard time finding it playing if you don't live in a big city, but I think it's worth going out of your way for and sooner rather than later, because I doubt it'll be out there much longer. Haven't seen Whalerider yet, but it's on my list and available for rent now. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Feb 2004 10:45:43 EST From: LCStanley7@aol.com Subject: Re: ulnar neuritis, NJC Don wrote: > What I have got is a condition called Ulnar Neuritis. > Nest Tuesday I am going for Nerve Conduction Study tests. This will indicate > the time for responses from this nerve and then I will have to have surgery. Hi Don! Sounds like you might have cubital tunnel syndrome... There is a tunnel the ulnar nerve travels through which is formed by two bones and a ligament. If you do repetitive bending of your elbow or keep your elbow bent or lean on your elbow for long periods of time, the nerve can become compressed in this tunnel either from inflammation of the nerve itself (ulnar neuritis, "itis" means inflammation) or from the tissues surrounding the nerve. I wouldn't be too quick to let them do surgery on you. The more conservative treatment to be tried first would be a splint on your elbow with your forearm extended... preventing bending at the elbow joint. Keeping your forearm extended (straight out) relieves pressure on the ulnar nerve which stretches when the elbow is in the flexed (L shaped) position. You might also ask your physician if you could try a steroid shot in your elbow before going to the extreme of surgery. If the problem is caused by the inflammation of the nerve itself, steroids at the site and wearing a splint could be beneficial. However, if there is a problem with abnormal bone deposits, like with bone spurs, you might need surgery. Here is a website for you to read about this condition in guitarists: http://www.museweb.com/ag/cubital.html Hope this helps. Keep me posted. What do y'all think? She not only approved of the BYT mixes, she produced them, and presumably had a hand in creating them. I think your idea is great; I can definitely hear Jungle Line as a dance mix, or Talk To Me, or France They Kiss On Main St (amour, hm m- m-m-mama) BOOM ta BONG.ta ... Generally in order to use samples of existing recordings in a new recording, you have to get a licence from the artist &/or label, which can cost thousands of dollars. But maybe if Joni liked it, she would give it her blessing. Anyway, if anyone does this, I'd like to hear the results. Clinton on the other hand was > perceived as someone who might make some progressive changes, > but it soon became apparent that he in many ways indistinguishable > from the Republicans. Except that Clinton's first acts as president showed otherwise. No Republican would have as his first acts trying to change the military's policy regarding gays/lesbians, and overhauling the health care system. Both initiatives were clumsily presented (one of the negatives of being a Washington "outsider") and were shot down immediately, but I think Clinton did come into office wanting and expecting to make some progressive changes. There's no way to know what he might have achieved if the conservative, Clinton-hating Republicans in Congress had not had such power. One of the reasons Bush's huge deficit is so offensive is that the surplus from the Clinton years was gained in part by cutting back drastically on social programs. There's not much extra in the budget anymore, so Bush now talking about having to cut spending in order to balance the budget is just empty talk. His tax cuts benefiting mostly the wealthy are what has caused the deficit, and that has nothing to do with 9/11. Bush now putting the blame on Congress for the deficit, when the Republican majority there has given him everything he wants, is, arrrgghhhh, how can he get away with that? If the similarity you mention, Randy, between Clinton and the Repubs has to do with raising money from special interests and paying them back, maybe so. I'd say, though, that Bush makes Clinton look like an amateur in that department.
