Ignore me; ignorance is bliss. I am not ignoring your valid criticism, so this is short and sweet. I'll go plow some deep and muddy fallow fields. I wonder, Who planted all those iris bulbs Van Gogh and Monet painted? My father planted thousands of bulbs in his last 10 years "to give back to the community." While he was on the Planning Commission, they passed his suggested ordinance prohibiting cutting down trees. It amazes me how trees feed on their own fallen fingers. I always liked playing Van's "Bulbs", and sent Joni a sadnesses poem about sharp japanese iris wordswords and failed bulbs, partially in grass-style calligraphy. Is mindlight enough to brighten your day? Hope so! Every tender curve requires energy ... ask any iris. It's my youngest daughter's name. I painted her a butterfly beyond her grasp for Christmas, with a sun+stars+crescentmoon bracelet, her forearm held aloft in just blue sky. It was my first painting in many years and she loves it. I wonder how butterflies find their right kind(s) of flowers? perhaps it's better to remain ignorant of such things. Perhaps I'll plant lots more wildflowers soon and try to translate them into Arabic, for Rumi + Lorca. As a DJ at Philadelphia's WMMR and other influential FM radio stations in the city, Sciaky was instrumental in the careers of such artists as Bruce Springsteen, Yes and Billy Joel. He is survived by his wife, Judy, and their daughter, Monica. The following are statements from Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt regarding Sciaky's passing. Bruce Springsteen: "Ed Sciaky was the kind of DJ whose passion was the lifeblood for artists like myself. His support for my work brought me to an audience in Philadelphia that has remained one of my strongest to this day. Ed was the DJ as true rock and roll fan...the very spirit of the music he loved. He will be greatly missed." Steven Van Zandt: "Ed Sciaky will never die. That is what being legendary is all about. As long as the music of the bands he played lives, he lives. I loved him. I'll miss him. I discovered it was from resting my arms on the desk in front of the keyboard when typing at work. I stopped doing that and the problem went away. My numbness in my fingers sometimes comes back when I rest my elbows on the chair armrests, so I try to minimize using that position. But now I have another problem. Frozen shoulder with pain. I can hardly play 5 songs on my guitar without having to stop from the pain. I'm taking expensive prescriptions and going to physical therapy, and it doesn't seem to be helping. Plus it is costing me a small fortune. Even if I have the surgery, I'm still going to have to go to physical therapy afterwards. I'm wondering if the surgery isn't the quickest and cheapest route to take. I went back on last Tuesday as it had gotten worse instead of better. What I have got is a condition called Ulnar Neuritis. Nest Tuesday I am going for Nerve Conduction Study tests. This will indicate the time for responses from this nerve and then I will have to have surgery. Christ almighty, I am worried. from what I have read, it is not life threatening, unless you are a guitarist. If it doesn't work I may have to take up the maracas or some such instrument. Has anybody else on this list ever had this problem or know anyone who has had this problem. And what is the outcome from it. Sorry to burden. Don Sydney, Australia >> Don: I am no expert but I have had experience with pinched nerves and such. A while back, I suffered from Sciatica (sciatic nerves run down your body from neck down both legs) and, after accurate diagnosis by my family doctor) physical therapy was suggested. After several months of PT, I was feeling 90 % better, at least well enough to live with the little pain I had left. A year or so later, I had another slight bout with it and after only a month of PT, it's been gone for good (hopefully) but I do a series of exercises every morning... I seldom miss unless I'm late for work. About nine months ago, I had soreness in my right shoulder, elbow and numbness in the two smallest fingers of my right hand (and I'm taking piano lessons!) so back to my doctor. He again correctly diagnosed arthritis in my discs (especially two in the vertabre/neck area) causing pinched nerves to the two fingers on my right hand (x-rays confirmed this). My daughter is also an OT and she has advised me as well. After about four months of PT/OT again, and proper exercise, I have no more pain and only very slight tightness in my right hand at times, usually in cold weather... numbness is gone but piano playing hasn't improved much though ;-) Hummm... I think I still need lessons but I swear by Physical/Occupational Therapy. They can work wonders on my 60 year-old body. God bless 'em! I don't know if what you've got can be cured/treated like mine but if you'd like to talk to my doctor or PT, email me off-list and I'll get you in contact. On TV last week was a American documentary called "Sherman's March" made in 1976 by Ross ?..it's about 2 and 1/2 hours in length and concerns Ross ? and his 1976 trip thru the South (Southern America) and his mother and teachers attempts at matchmaking him to Souheron Belles! He meets a would be actress who wants to be in a Burt Reynolds film when he is Atlanta..who does this Tartaric cum aerobic exercise and does not wear any underpants while doing it!. A woman who is having a nip and tuck A friend of his sisters who is preparing with her parents and Jesus for the end of the world..they live in the back woods with shelters and guns. Next is the lone woman on a farm on a river who is a nudist who has 'dropped out' who spent most of her time picking out ticks off the film producers legs! Next he see and films Burt Reynolds and is almost arrested for doing such!! Next is THE Southern Belle who is from Charleston...and from Gone with the Wind..fiddle dee dee..who also preparing for the end of the world is nigh. The ex teacher who I think fancies Ross and he her?..... as she overtakes the film as a semi pimp and making Ross meet someone and get rid of his camera. Then Ross's exgirlfriend who has also found Jesus and dislikes Ross even more as he is filming her! All this as he travels Sherman's 1864/65 route thru the South.. So my question is?? Has anyone seen this film? and WHAT happens to the ladies and Ross?.we are talking 28 years here! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2004 21:10:13 -0500 From: vince Subject: njc whale rider looking for any comments on this movie - the actress (13 years old) Keisha Castle Hughes got nominated for an Oscar for for best actress in this. The movie was a profound immersion in Maori culture and damn was > it entertaining. New Zealand posters - your country is beautiful. Thanks, Vince - we think so! Keisha did an amazing job with this film, considering it was her first ever acting role and she was actually only 11 at the time of filming. People who've seen the film might be impressed to hear that the emotional scene where she delivered her winning speech (dedicated to her grandfather) was done in only one take, but they had to stop half-way through to load more film in one of the cameras. It really shows how talented she is - to be able to keep those emotions going. It did portray Maori culture very well, especially the traditions and the way it has (and hasn't) adapted to 21st century life. Incidentally, the community where most of the film was made is real, including the marae, etc. The only problem now is the tourists flocking to the small settlement! They also did an amazing job of creating those whales - all animatronic, although some of the smaller ones actually had people inside them. The footage of the whales in the ocean was real (sourced elsewhere rather than filmed for this movie) and the scenes of Keisha on the whale's back were also real. A model whale was dragged behind a boat with her on it - miles out to sea, and in the middle of winter! I'll be thrilled if she manages to win the Oscar - another Anna Pacquin in the making (although I think she's more talented), but I suspect Charlize Theron may get it this year. Not that I've seen Monster (I will eventually - we tend to get movies 6 months after the rest of the world) but I've heard great things about her, and the fact that she won the Golden Globe probably indicates that she's the favourite.
