It's such a wonderful, life affirming movie! I've found that a lot of people don't "get" it if they take it at face value. Kenny B _________________________________________ Hey Kenny, In my bio that is listed as my favorite movie as well. The book is great because it talks about how she went into a pet store to let all of the canaries free. I knew Ruth Gordon's sister who taught at UMKC back in the 70's when I went to the Art Institute of Kansas City, her name was Lillian and she was a lot like Ruth. She said that that was one of Ruth's favorite rolls because she felt like she was playing herself in the movie. I think it should be a requirement in school for everyone to see that movie. It would be interesting to hear what Ron might say about those days. I recall that Linda was very popular at the time (so I assume she was already earning lots of money) and I don't know what her motivation was - maybe she has discussed it somewhere in some interview. in the mid 80's to early 90's i listened only to christian music, so a lot of that times music just passed me by unheard. i missed the linda ronstadt tour (well - i guess i did 'cause this is the first i heard of it!!)!!! about the only ones i managed to catch were in the early 80's (chris deburg - ick phooeyy and tina turner - pre huge comeback career - great!!). the only other big name bands i remember being out here was queen (i never bothered) and chris rea (couldnt make it - damn!!) i guess i really have mixed feelings about sanctions. they seem to work, yet at the same time - they hit the very people they are supposed to be protecting the worst. they can also have a certain amount of backlash by causing the govt to prop up local industry - leading to massive tax hikes - affecting every one. some essential basics such as medicine were particularly hard hit due to high prices due to supply difficulties. and of course inordinate amunts of defense spending were killing the economy. i dont really think that the inability of foreign bands to come here was as big an issue artistically, as was the stranglehold on the local music scene. a number of musicians got into all sorts of trouble for what they said, as well as for playing for mixed race crowds. all broadcasting was govt controlled so you only got the crappy mor bands while most of the quality stuff was never heard. (some thing like the way the US seems to be going with the notorious "clear channel"?????) i actually think that the change in south africa came about more as a result of the unique pairing of fw deklerk and nelson mandela, than as a result of sanctions. take a look at zimbabwe - there are all sorts of sanctions in place, yet mugabe continues to run the country into the ground, despite having reputedly made himself one of the richest men in the world (a dollar multi-billionaire). inflation is now so bad - they print banknotes with printing only on one side of the paper 'cause they cant afford ink for both sides!!!!!! so on balance - i have to say that i think that in the case of SA and zimbabwe - sanctions have created more problems than they ever solved. thank god we had some above average politicians instead of mugabe & his ilk (tho we now seem to heading that way.........) ron np - susan guzzi - sweet bird - fest 2002 (ps - wanna get joni to the fest - send her a selection of the music!!!!) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jan 2004 20:40:11 +0200 From: "ron" Subject: Re: was "an update on my DVD player," now an infomercial for gisele NJC hi >>>cindy wrote >>>>and we have a tiny little stash still here at the house, and i have christmas bills to pay. if you're interested in taking one off my hands and you live in the US, send me 10 bucks (yes, a check is fine!) and your mailing address, and i'll send you a copy. if you live outside the US, i don't have any idea how to handle the money thing, so let me know you're interested and give me a bit to sort the details out. this cd is certainly highly recomended by me (& im sure many others too). now when the hell are we gonna get a full cd!!!!! giselle is one of the most electrifying and rivetting performers ive had the privilege of seeing live, and i, for one, would love to see her get the recognition she deserves. and to elaborate on "drift away" i have versions of the song recorded by people such as bruce springsteen, rolling stones, tom rush, and uncle cracker. giselle blows them all away - she makes the song her own, brings out the emotion, and move me to tears every time i hear it. so giselle - if youre out there - thank you!!! ron ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jan 2004 16:54:42 EST From: Michaelpaz@aol.com Subject: Ray Davies of the Kinks Wounded in New Orleans This just in FYI for all. NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Singer-songwriter Ray Davies of the Kinks was shot and wounded in the leg while chasing two thieves who snatched a purse from a woman he was walking with in New Orleans on Sunday night, police confirmed Monday. Police said Davies, 59, and the woman were walking near the edge of the French Quarter, near the intersection of Burgundy Street and Esplanade Avenue around 8:30 p.m. when the theft and shooting occurred. Davies was treated and released at a hospital, Capt. Marlon Defillo, a police spokesman, said. One suspect was captured within hours of the shooting and another was being sought. The woman was not hurt. Police would not release her identity. The shooting happened blocks away from Bourbon Street, which was awash with people in town for Sunday night's Sugar Bowl, a national college championship game between LSU and Oklahoma. Police were stationed on every corner of the party area and were able to respond quickly to the shooting, Defillo said. The area of the shooting was relatively quiet, however, Defillo said. It is a largely residential area on the border of the French Quarter and the Faubourg Marigny area. Less than a week earlier, Davies, along with singer-guitarist Eric Clapton, received royal honors in London. They were named Commanders of the Order of the British Empire at a ceremony on New Year's Eve. The Kinks, part of the 1960s British invasion, had a string of hits including "You Really Got Me," "Sunny Afternoon," "All Day and All of the Night" and "Lola." Epiphany Related: Christian (ipif4ene) [Gr.,=showing], a prime Christian feast, celebrated Jan. 6, called also Twelfth Day or Little Christmas. Its eve is Twelfth Night. It commemorates three eventsthe baptism of Jesus (Mark 1), the visit of the Wise Men to Bethlehem (Mat. 2), and the miracle at Cana (John 2). In his baptism Jesus' sonship to God was manifested to the world; in the visit of the Wise Men he was manifested as king to the Gentiles; and at the marriage feast at Cana his power to perform miracles (a divine prerogative) was shown. In popular celebration the feast is far more ancient than Christmas. Technically it is more important than Christmas, ranking after Easter and Pentecost. It is a day of gifts in many countries. In the Eastern Church the waters are blessed on this day. The word epiphany means a manifestation, usually of divine power. Thus the actual appearance of God (as in the burning bush) or a moment of divine revelation may be called an epiphany. And this, which I cannot attribute, but has circulated widely on the net, and a favorite of ours: Three Wise WOMEN would have... Asked directions Arrived on time Helped deliver the Baby Cleaned the stable Made casseroles Brought practical gifts and there would be peace on Earth. By the way I heard she entered a trepidation contest in the UK some where and the first time she was at the farting post she melted the damn thing! At least that is what somebody told me, but you did'nt hear that from me. I hope the "newbies" don't take you too seriously. Gisele rocks. Watching her perform (not just listening to her) was one of the highlights for me of fest 03. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jan 2004 22:17:30 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Kaki King rerun on Conan tonight (1/5/04) njc --- Michael Paz wrote: > Hi folks, > > For those of you who didn't catch 24-year-old phenom > Kaki King before (not > to be confused with my dear friend and traveling > companion Kakki), She's gotta helluva nerve stealing Kakki's name. Thnaks Jack. Ray Davies was on the local news but I missed it cause I had a business call and I hate those cause they always come when there's something good on like "Ugly Joe 2" or whatever it's called.
