The album, Scarlet's Walk, has been one I've returned to over and over since hearing for the first time, and this song leapt out the most. Continues to do so in fact. >> Oh yes, hear hear! This is a very, very strong collection of songs. It seems that Tori has ironed out all of the creases, achieving a lovely, organic band sound, writing uniformly excellent songs, cutting out the tweeness that occasionally marred her early work and the tunelessness that crept into her later work; and her singing is a joy, with none of the histrionics and odd yodelling that could creep in. She was always supremely talented, and never made a bad record, but made a few unsatisfying ones. For anyone who parted company with her after the debut, this is the one to take you back to her. My song of the week, the earworm, is the opening song on Sophie B Hawkins's album Timbre, from 1999; the song is called either Strange Thing or Walking In Your Blue Jeans, depending on which version of the album you have. Either way, it's an instant grabber: a lovely little electric piano intro, ushering in her gorgeous, husky, rough-edged voice. And I can't describe what's so magical about the way she sings the opening line, except that it doesn't sound like the start of a song. It sounds as if she's coming in in the middle. Hmm, that makes no sense. Does anybody else know this song and have any idea what I'm going on about?? Azeem in London NPIMH: The Two Towers, special extended edition and a load of appendices, which I watched on DVD today. Mind-boggling stuff. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Dec 2003 22:31:29 -0800 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: get ready! njc I LOVE this song!!! I think Gary has hid these gems from the world way too long and it is great that you are doing this. I was so amazed the first time I learned there were Gary's recordings of both my favorite Laura Nyro and rare Joni songs. He has one of the naturally pure and most gifted voices and musical sense I have ever heard (and the same goes for Sherelle while I'm mentioning it!).
