(NJC) Hi Gary, I wanted to also send this to the group so that everyone can know how fantastic you are!!! I just listened to your tape on my way to work and I have to say that I absoloutely love it!!!! Is it available on a CD? If not, we will have to figure a way to get this onto CD Baby! I love the title of your project, "Little Gems and Rarities" because that is exactly what it is! "Hollywood Song" is the first song on the tape and my ears perked to hear your melodic voice and the great quality of the recording. Gary, you have "it", that's all I can say. You made me fellt he emotions of the song and your control and phrasing is fantastic. You sing with ease and confidence. It's very easy to see that you are doing what your heart loves when you are vocalizing on each track. I think each one of the songs are so very interesting and excellent choices. I love your original tune, "Nun Like A Lover". The piano accompaniment is fantastic (Is that you playing?) and the emotions are so Joni. That song along with "Tom Cat Goodby" by Laura Nyro are so raw and real. They both took me on a journey. I'll have to listen again, but one of your songs has a country flavor to it that I absolutely loved. It reminded me of Nickel Creek a little but had it's own identity. For those who have never heard Gary Zack sing, his voice is smooth and melodic. The words seem to flow effortlessly from his mouth. He seems to be able to tell stories that are rich with intonation and emotion. His choice of songs is excellent and I could seriously listen to each and every one at any given time. Gary does two Joni songs (Winter Lady and Carnival in Kenora) as well as two Laura Nyro songs (The Cat Song and Tom Cat Goodby). It's hard for me to pick a favorite off of this project because each song is so very good and so full of emotion and meaning. I would love to see this put together in a package and put out for the general public to enjoy. A talent like Gary's should not be hidden under a bushell. Gary if you are not already doing it, you should be out singing and promoting this project. I love it!! Not many people have been participating and it would be nice to have much more input from everyone. I am suggesting the following: For The Roses-From the Greek BSN performance Sex Kills-From the Jazz Fest performance (the guitar sounds so nasty on this one and it was the debut of the VG-8) Other submissions so far are below. As you remarked earlier, the sound quality of many of these unofficial recordings is quite poor, and unfortunately this probably eliminates a lot of stuff. However, as you know, there are some good quality recordings out there, including the Hissing Demos, A Day in the Garden, and the Gene Autry Museum concert. Another that has quite good sound is the Tokyo-London concert series of 1983. I particularly like A Case of You from this, which features a very soulful Joni on solo guitar. In "INTERVIEW", the writer is on his way to apply for a job and he fantasizes that the fabulous babe at the reception desk might try to change his life, by first picking him up. The Greek Theatre where B&R festival was held is in Berkeley, not the one in LA. Also listed as 2nd & 3rd of Sept on appearances link below. Regarding: The Hissing Demos in circulation has kind of a weird blanket of sound processing on it, like someone ran it through some kind of denoise or (ironically) dehissing program, sucking some of the life out of it. I would love to get ahold of the generation before that and remaster it or retransfer it. If anyone has access to that, I'd be glad to do it in the interests of quality. And to hear it myself! Those are my suggestions. If I think of any more, I will post them. I also have all of her Leno/Letterman appearances in excellent sound quality, and the Rosie O'Donnell appearance for BSN. You should have no trouble at all booking yourself to play gigs and I would be happy to pass on your stuff to anyone around here in New Orleans. Thanks very much for the lovely gift of your music. HEY how about some colaborating at the next Jonifest??? Kakki you will positively LOVE this CD as will many of you tasteful people on this list. Gary do you have this on CD? It is much cheaper to produce and distribute cd's now then tapes and I had to wait to hear it till I got home cause all I have in the car is CD. If you do not already have it on CD I can help you transfer it as soon as I get my new copy of Cubase software in. Best of luck to you and have a very Happy New Year! Mark Tatum: The unreleased stuff I have is due to the generosity of Bob Muller. We definitely need a sample of the good quality Hissing Demos; I would vote for either Sweet Bird or Shades of Scarlett Conquering. From the Gene Autrey Museum show (1/26/95) I like Moon at the Window because you can hear her guitar work so well and because its an outstanding performance of this song. My last suggestion is Trouble Man from A Day in the Garden (8/15/98). I like her version better than the original. Stephen T.: Oh and I'll nominate "In France They Kiss On Mainstreet" from the Hissing Demos because I think it is a lot different because the THOSL vers is so much more electric. I do love both versions though! Still have those great shades of the old English beat, hybrid Beatles/Byrds but also some new shades of a little bit country and a little bit trance. This one is a bit quieter than his other releases but as beautiful as ever. I learned today that the word we use for royalites, "mechancicals", does not have it's roots in the jukebox. It's even older than that. "Mechanicals" originally meant the royality earned on piano rolls. Cool huh? How come David Lahm didn't mention that? Speaking of the devil, one of the interviewed was a decendant of Jimmy McHugh who wrote music to lyrics by Mr. Lahm's mum, Dorthy Fields.
