Joni wouldn't talk to Karen so she had to use sources who would. Karen did her homework and thoroughly documented her sources. If one's read all of the interviews through the decades (as most of us have), there's little that's new. For me, it was worth it to read up on the polio, and the details of finding the right 1st label. JMDLers made copies of unreleased recordings for Karen, the appearances, probably the discography, and certainly with the list of Joni's songs which other artists have also recorded. Many of us were given credits but none of us "share" the profits. I'm not sure telling the nay sayers to fuck off is quite the sort of response Richard Curtis would support, but then again he does like throwing the f-word around with gay abandon. Anyway, I tend to champion films I love with similar passion, so good on you. I have to say, in the words of Gene Siskel (or is it Roger Ebert?) that I hate, hate, hate this movie. I thought it was a mishmash of cliches and recycled good bits from previous Richard Curtis films. And talk about saccharine! I felt *angry* at the end, as if an extraordinarily complacent and cynical team were trying to force me at gunpoint to feel good. Instead, I felt like drowning a few kittens. And couldn't someone have taken Curtis aside and told him that whole section with the gawky guy wanting to go to America was about as funny as being sawn in half with a rusty chainsaw? As for the moppet on drums, he made Trini Alvarado in Satisfaction look like Sheila E. Richard Curtis is too much of a pro for the film to be without some redeeming features; and any two or three of the stories could have made a far better film if he'd bothered to put some work in. Oh, and the Joni moment was indeed the most touching part of the film. Lest you think I'm a snobbish old curmudgeon, I will confess that I have enjoyed plenty of shamelessly sentimental feelgood fillms in my time. I loved Sleepless in Seattle; hell, I even saw Notting Hill twice. Love Actually was of a completely different order of emetic sweetness. I've just watched Monsoon Wedding on DVD. We know that Joni sees many of her songs as films in her head - she says she's a very visual person. Call it a film, a story, a poem, a song or a journey, these expressions of creativity are all inter-related. The journey seems to be a recurrent theme in Joni's work. Some are physical, outter journeys, while others are metaphysical, inner journeys; many songs combine elements of both. Here are some of my favourite Joni journey songs. While I enjoy most of Joni's earlier work, I especially enjoy her late work - I feel closer to her when I hear recordings that feature her voice as it sounds today; I recognize her mature speaking voice. Her first record is also beautiful, imo, since it features a calmer, deeper voice - before she settled into her ``helium`` register ! Best films (in no particular order): In The Cut - Jane Campion Rules; she may never make a perfect film, but she will never make one that is anything other than fascinating and unique. The sex scenes were really *grown up*, in a way they seldom are in films; the same was true of the conversations about sex. Meg Ryan has never been better, and I'm not just saying that for the obvious reason :-) (although she does look very beautiful and womanly). Mark Ruffalo is top drawer - why isn't this man better known? Young Adam - Ewan McGregor at his very considerable best; Tilda Swinton excellent as ever; Emily Mortimer a perfect picture of pulchritude. So dark. A feel like sh1te film. Lilya 4-Ever - Oh boy, makes Young Adam look like Mary Poppins. This film is *genuinely* shocking. I was tearful and stunned at the end, and felt angry and helpless. The lead performance is beautiful and heartbreaking and I believe this film is (dread word) important. I believe in fact that it either has been or is intended to be shown in schools in the former Soviet block. Anyone who has seen it will understand why. Good Bye Lenin - Just delightful, and truly touching. It helps if you have lived in or at least been to Germany (particularly Berlin), but anyone could enjoy this wry and poignant take on the old GDR. About Schmidt - Prime Jack. With The Pledge and now this, it's as if a lightbulb has gone on above his head saying 'hey, you know what, I could try flexing my proper acting muscles again, instead of my going-through-the-motions muscles, which don't need any more exercise.' He was so good in this, never trying to ingratiate himself, but not doing his lovable rogue schtick either. And his letters to Ndugu, the African boy he sponsors, are some of the funniest things I saw (or rather, heard) in a cinema all year. In This World - Another film that is not exactly a laugh a minute, but was brilliantly done, using non-professional actors. Again, it probably helps if you've lived in Pakistan or Afghanistan, but it's still a powerful ride with an inbuilt momentum and logic. (honourable mention: City Of God was sensational, but I saw it on DVD not in cinema) Albums (starting with the W's): Amy Winehouse - Frank Like Madeleine Peyroux a few years ago, this was a young woman who seemed to spring fully-formed from nowhere, causing me to drop whatever else I was doing, mutter an awed 'whoah, who the hell is that?' - and then I heard she's only 19! Her singing style can sound a tad mannered, but she carries it off with winning bravado and swaggering insouciance. And the songs are diverse and really strong. She has the right stuff. Willis - Come Get Some Another young British debutante with a strikingly individual style (and there are others: Joss Stone, whose album I haven't heard yet; Butterfly Boucher, whose album Flutterby was virtually a solo project by this multi-instrumentalist). Not all of the songs work, but overall this album is great as it's so confident and different. Lucinda Williams - World Without Tears One of THE great voices in music today. Songs that are built to last. Great playing. Effortless attitude with no artifice. What's not to like? David Bowie - Reality A bit like Jack Nicholson in a way. Well, not really, only in the sense that many sensible people had resigned themselves to never hearing a truly *great* record from him again, when he delivers Heathen, a remarkable piece of work by anyone's standards, then follows it up in short order with another cracking set. His voice has rarely sounded better, the songs have regained the focus that escaped him when he was roaming around the blind alleys in the 90s, and Tony Visconti's production is unimprovable. Thea Gilmore - Avalanche Yet *another* excellent young British singer-songwriter, although this one is no novice: despite being only 24, this is her 4th album, not including at least another LP's worth of songs on EPs and singles. She's a really sharp and peppy lyricist, has a strong and supple voice, and an ear for a good hook. Sandy Dillon - Nobody's Sweetheart Maybe my favourite of the whole bunch. She's always been an extraordinary voice in search of the right musical settings (and she's been around for a while: I bought her first single nearly 20 years ago). Finally with this album, everything came together. The songs have proper tunes, something she's often lacked before; the words are visceral and memorable; the arrangements are imaginative (including some excellent use of sampling), built around her own spooky Fender Rhodes. I dread to think how few copies this album shifted, as it pretty much slipped under the radar. You, dear Joni friends, do not have that excuse now :-) Right, time for bed...
