Hi all, I like to point out that at www.sharingthegroove.org there are a number of Joni Mitchell BitTorrent trades going on. And quit a number of interesting JM trades have been going on there. It's a pitty I'm only joining in just now. For those who don't know what BitTorrent is.. it's like kazaa except that it's much faster but the files are only provided for the short amount of time that a lot of people are downloading them. While downloading a file everybody shares his downloaded portion with all other people that are downloading it. I would encourage interested people with an ADSL or broadband connection to take a look at this site. The more people who start using it the faster everybody downloads. To actually use BitTorrent you will need a BT Client like TorrentStorm. Alex ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Dec 2003 17:54:46 -0500 From: "Joseph S.E. Palis" Subject: Re: Fw: Love? Actually? njc now movies Count me in as one of those who enjoyed the movie for its sake. _Love Actually_ is not really _When Harry Met Sally_ but the best moments more than made up for some indulgent scenes (I didn't care quite enough for the Colin Firth and Hugh Grant sub-plots). And yes, Emma Thompson was great in that scene even if I thought it was a little like her most effective scene in _Howards End_ where she basically supressed something heartbreakingly painful. Much as I enjoyed this film, that time I watched this, I was reeling from a combination of being homesick, new to my environment and breaking up with my girfriend of 7 years, so I was a bit depressed because the movie highlighted so much joy that sort of highlighted my own sense of alone-ness. But that's in the past now, I think. I don't know about _The Cooler_ yet but I heard that Alec Baldwin was good in it, and Maria Bello was in it too, so I may watch it and find out for myself. This afternoon, I watched _Something's Gotta Give_ starring Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton, Keanu Reeves and Amanda Peet. I thought the film is a high-minded romantic comedy and I liked most of it. Diane Keaton especially. Here is Annie Hall in middle-age and she did not bother to hide her wrinkles and laugh lines and crow's feet and other signs of aging a woman of her age should already have. Initially I thought Jack Nicholson is a bit too over-exposed and too larger-than- life to be believable, but he just dissolved his persona in the role and I actually liked him in this film -- an endearing old man this side of Richard Harris' character in _Wrestling Ernest Hemingway_. Keanu Reeves nicely underplayed his doctor role and again I thought he did a good job in playing a low-key physician besotted with Diane Keaton's character (this is actually the second film I liked him in -- the other one being his supporting role in _The Gift_). Nice to see Frances McDormand spewing hilarious one-liners. This woman does not look uncomfortable playing a supporting role and she even managed to steal a few scenes she was in. Amanda Peet is drop-dead gorgeous. But where can I meet a woman of Diane Keaton's character? She is funny, unafraid to show her aging self and just plain lovable -- I can imagine Nicholson and Reeves' characters falling for her. And she managed to convey the inexpressible. In one scene where Nicholson's character said to her that he will sleep in his room rather than with her, her face was like a prism of conflicting emotions -- exultant one moment then melancholy the next and back again. It reminds me of Fernanda Montenegro's final scene in _Central Station_. There were some scenes I am quite unsure whether it was pulled off effectively or if I should trust my instinct that it was a bit over- acted, but the film made me feel warm inside. The musical scoring helped too. It was like incipient happiness or maybe just plain excited anticipation with a delicious kind of melancholy underlying it. I loved it. It sort of captured the film's spirit. Lastly, this film has wonderful dialogue and great actors to act them out. Its never too self-consciously clever the way Nora Ephron movies sometimes are wont to lapse, nor too talkie this side of Woody Allen. Its like a candelight dinner with someone you knew for a long time. And that person's companionship made you appreciate why life is worth living. Ooops, I sound like someone else. I also watched _Cold Mountain_ and loved it. But if others already did, I want to discuss it with you on or off list. Another example is a song called "Wave" by Alejandro Escovedo. This song was in heavy rotation on the singer-songwriter stations a couple of years back called "Wave". (Hi Alison) On the interview+music show "THE WORLD CAFE" he said it is about people left behind when other emigrate to the US. He changes the refrain slightly as the story unfolds. At the beginning, the people in the "old country" think the US is a dream world. In part it goes: "Wave goodbye. They've made it to the other side. The sun shines brighter there and everyone has golden hair. " Later on, one of the emigrants looks back on that expectation and reports: "Don't you cry. I made it to the other side. The sun's not brighter here. It only shines on golden hair." In lesser hands, that minimalism might have been sing-songy. I've had the CD, "A MAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE" on infinite repeat all day. My opinion? Not bad, but not terribly inspired. Stays fairly close to the original in its arrangement. Moore has a decent voice, but nothing particularly special, IMO. Maybe she needs to mature a little? Needs to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous romance, or something. Her singing is too pop-py for this woman's taste. Do they actually teach people to sing like that? with the overdone and not-from-the-heart melissma (sp?) that's supposed to pass for emotion of some kind. I have Moore's Coverage CD. I have to admit - I like it. Yes, the young Ms. Moore will benefit from further experience and maturity, but I think she has an impressive vocal range. Help Me and I Feel the Earth Move don't fare too well, but songs by Todd Rundgren, Joe Jackson and John Hiatt do, I think. She took a big risk by doing this CD and is to be commended for that at least. The revered singer/songwriter sheds light on the songs in entertaining liner notes and a bonus DVD documentary. The 44 tracks include demos of Two Grey Rooms, It's All Over Now Baby Blue and Good Friends. This review of the Geffen box appeared in USA Today (I think) recently. It mentions a DVD. Did anyone find a DVD in their set?
