NJC because we're all of european descendent, on christmas eve we eat about 600,000 calories worth of winter european dishes (mostly a mix of german, spanish and italian food) although the temperature is usually about 35 celsius. we have both creches and christmas trees with fake snow and at 12 midnight we toast and open our presents. some of us go to "misa de gallo", midnight mass. most people buy tons of firecrackers and the next morning, many of our neighbors come back from the ER short of two or three fingers they had before midnight. sometimes a nose is missing too. meanwhile, the rest of us eat lots of nougat and panettone and marzipan, adding to our general sense of not really knowing where or who we are. on the 25th, families get together again for lunch. throw in another 600,000 calories, give or take a few. it takes a whole week to recover and get ready for new year's eve, when we do it exactly the same as on xmas eve, minus the midnight mass. more calories, more presents, fewer noses and fingers. some naughty folks smoke a joint at midnight. it's an old tradition. the rest of us eat twelve different treats (probably a typical argentine misunderstanding of the spanish grape tradition) at the sound of the midnight bells. nougat, marzipan, candied figs. champagne or "sidra" (an alcoholic drink made from fermented apples) is in order. on the 28th we have our fool's day (strangely enough, memorializing the day herod had all those children slaughtered). on the 27th, the whole country stops whatever they're doing to celebrate my birthday. on january 2, we all resume our psychoanalysis sessions until february, when our therapies go on vacation until march. on january 6, we put away the christmas trees and leave our shoes at the door for the magi to bring us presents. we leave some water and fodder for the camels too. wally, who fixed christmas dinner last sunday so that he can look forward to his marzipan in peace. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Dec 2003 01:19:42 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: RE: Guess who's coming to Xmas dinner?
