In the AA big book, there is a chapter called "The Doctor's Opinion," and in that chapter, Dr. Silkworth suggests that alcoholism is an "allergy" to alcohol, that no amount of will power could stop a person from having alcoholism. This was written in the 1930's. Allergy usually implies a problem with the immune system so although the term "allergy" is used, it is not exactly what happens with alcoholism... but the concept is accurate. It has been known for years that there is alteration of the metabolism of alcohol in alcoholics due to a difference in the genetics for the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase that breaks down alcohol. In some races, like American Indians and Asians, the problem with this enzyme is dramatic. In others, it is more subtle. In people who metabolize alcohol successfully with this enzyme (people who can drink normally), an aldehyde is produce which is seen by the body as toxic which gives the person the sensation that they have had enough alcohol. In the alcoholic, this red flag so to speak never flies. First, many many thanks for starting this on list: I'm awfully short of time these days, so I haven't been able to post on list about this project (you know, I intended to make it clear, choosing words etc...) But you did it masterly! Of course the main interest is trying to involve all of you, so the resulting compilation would be the fruit of a work of love from each and everyone (well, not necessarily) people in this wonderful list. Maybe some of you are a little tired of making lists, but there's some of us who likes to play: choosing songs (with exact recording dates, etc, even photographs and letter fonts to the artwork, etc) There's something, though, that I'd like to add: I was thinking about not only weeding here, but also to make an [acousticharmonies] compilation. This list, that I know through Wonderful Mr Paz, is a very interesting one: aimed not only for weeding shows, but with a lot of interest: talking about music... with sections like SingerSongwriter of the week, Album of the week, etc. Through its year and a month of existence, there have been made some compilations (you could go to the next link, open to everybody, not only for members, and sustained by my italian friend Marco: http://www.mysongbook.org/ah/ah.htm) As you can see, there are Richard Thompson, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne... but no Joni! That's why I thought of arranging an [acousticharmonies] compilation of our SIQUOMB. There's much interest in this list (AH) about Joni's recordings, so I think it will be very well received. I only know, by now, the two last volumes, the ones being made after I joined the AH list, but I find them really rapturing. The compilation made some weeks ago by our Cover King: Joni Mitchell - Off The Record surely is of highest interest, but I even dare to say it would be interesting too compiling a couple of discs with songs performed live (unreleased officially in those exact dates) : ie: songs known in her official albums, yes, but with another version. Do you know what I mean? Something like the Jackson Browne's one. Well, of course we could arrange two [acousticharmonies] compilation double albums! One double for the unreleased songs (this is already made: Bob's Off The Record), and another double set with the other material. Of course this will be of lesser interest for us, at least for the nut completists who are already gathering all her live stuff, but I'd love to have (and even make) this compilation, too. Don't you? Please don't let me alone in this, if so, it's in danger of including that Rainy Night House/Blue Boy over and over again :-) Well, I know it's Chistmastime but we're in nooo hurry. I disagree with gene...the disease of alcholism, addiction is not a choice- who would choose to have such a disease? As an analogy, it is often compared to diabetes... Do people choose to have diabetes? Although there is still much that is unknown about it, in fact it is & has been for a long time, classified as a disease (but how slow our society is at acknowledging this fact in spite of the information)...However, drinking & using is a choice although at some point when the disease takes hold the choice disappears... Laura > Yes, I do think it will matter. Yes, there is still prejudice against races and other genetically determined traits and will always be most likely. However, there is a freeing affect that comes with truth. For example, alcoholism is now known to have a genetic basis so people are realizing it is not a moral issue any more than an allergy to pollen is a moral issue.< Gene> not all alcoholism is genetically caused, not all sexual preference is genetically caused. it may be hard (no pun intended) to believe, but some alcoholism...is purely individual choice. < ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2003 09:54:44 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Re: Caitlin Cary njc I have also heard good review of caitlin cary but like paz my list is long & I have not heard her yet... The band eventually came to be a collaboration between the two of them. So, she did contribute to the songwriting and the vocals plus her violin playing. Mix that in with some smart pop and country and you've got something. She is always a treat live. If you have the chance, go. I've had more than a few friends over the years who had alcoholism (all are now sober or in recovery) and I could never figure how they could just keep drinking hours and days on end, often to the point of blackout. (I throw up at 3 drinks - it's like an automatic shut-off valve LOL - I'm glad the aldehyde is working ;-) Thanks - this is great insight.
