I was reading about the January 1975 Grammy Award nominations today over at www.jonimitchell.com . Joni's COURT AND SPARK was up for 4 nominations. She and her arranger, Tom Scott, apparently shared a Grammy for "BEST ARRANGEMENT ACCOMPANYING VOCALISTS". When the awards were presented later that year, she won that category. Stevie Wonder's "FULFILLINGNESS FIRST FINALE" was the "ALBUM OF THE YEAR", over "COURT AND SPARK". I can't complain about that. There were lots of terrific albums released in '74 and that's a worthy selection. On the other hand, Joni's nomination for the song "COURT AND SPARK" as "BEST POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE, FEMALE" didn't come through. Carole King's song "JAZZMAN" (which featured Tom Scott too if I recall correctly) was not chosen either. It went to that ultra-sweet teen sensation, Olivia Newton-John for "I Honestly Love You". Joni's nomination for "HELP ME" as "RECORD OF THE YEAR" also went to Olivia Newton-John for "I Honestly Love You". Ouch. And of course, the worst was yet to come: Disco lay just ahead. I do not live in a mansion in London.. London mansions are very very very very expensive. a two bedroom flat in the outskirts of London will set you back about half a milion dollars!!!! I live on the south coast of England in a three storey Victorian house. It does not have the sort of sweeping steps up to a front door that most people imagine it would have, it does not have much of a garden. When I say I have a yard at the back I do mean that I have a yard. It is no more than 20 feet wide and about 6 feet deep.... I can get a table out there with chairs round it and when Ashes came to stay (and Chris Marshall) we had breakfast out there under a parasol. There are five bedrooms and three reception rooms.. alll in various states of chaos and refurbishment but eventually it will be something a bit nice.. but it all takes time and money. I love the uppy downyness, the twisty turniness of the corridoors and the old (1888) glass in the sash windows. The view is always slightly rippled in those panes of glass and at sundown the sun glints off them and they twinkle.. whereas new flat glass does not... you have to have impurity in the surfaces for the twinkles!!!!I love the banister rail that sweeps down with its spindles and peep throughs. I love having my stereo on in the kitchen diner and seeing the light come in through the skylight in the sort of conservatory on the side of the house.... My favourite moment after moving in was a few months later when I had been out, bought cut flowers and turned up the stereo and the shuffle play sprung into Chelsea Morning... and the dog and I danced around the house enjoying the freedom of the day and just being aloud to play the music I loved, at a time I wanted, at a volume that suited me and would not upset the neighbours........... So now you know a little bit about what Lucy does in her non mansion house in England the pictures can form for you all... What do you all enjoy, what is your fave room in your house, what makes you feel glad to shut the door and be living where you are living............? What Joni moment sums up your house/flat/mansion/estate/castle/island/room/ and you? You sing two verses of AG for one verse of SftD and on the chorus, subsitute the words "Jesus loves me, yes I know For the bible tells me so". I used to do a medley of Dear Mr. Fantasy/Sympathy/Amazing Grace. It was our big hit in the college duo I was in that played mostly originals and Joni Mitchell songs. It's a Sarah McLachlan song, and a very beautiful one at that. I haven't heard her version, but I do have a stunning rendition by Christine Collister on her album An Equal Love. You know, occasionally I roll my eyes at Vince shoe-horning another Eminem reference into a post. I now think think 'Ah, but Azeem, that's probably exactly what people think about you with your incessant Christine Collister name-checking...' With a child like Grace running all around this place It should be said, "my, how you've grown..." She was only three when she taught herself to read "I do not like them, Sam I Am" She taught us how to love We learned so much but not enough I'm sure that's when we learned to give a damn She will grace our lives no more She was only four She died before she was five Now it's a grave mistake God in his wisdom makes What does he care? He fashioned us from clay Lay me down in a bed of sunflowers Overgrown and wild I've survived my own child See the fields and meadows crying, yeah Proud dandelion heads turned grey Now the wind in a puff blows you away... John wrote songs "words first," while Paul generally had the tune first and put the words in later. The original name for "Yesterday" was "Scrambled Eggs." Sometimes Paul would stick some words in as placeholders until he could come up with something better. One of these was "the movement you need is on your shoulder" (Hey Jude). Paul wanted to fix that but John thought it was the best line in the whole song. He said, "we know what it means, but we don't know what it means." ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2003 #621 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
