I guess I define it as free trade - people trading or selling their particular skills, services and goods in exchange for currency, other goods, services, etc. Isn't that the natural default throughout history? I guess I should qualify that it was/is in democracies and not feudal, slavery or other systems. > Capitalism does come naturally to some people but then > again, so does socialism. I'm just guessing here but > from what I see, most people don't do either > particularly well. If one system worked better than > another, we probably WOULD all be well off. I guess what I always scratch my head at about socialism is that there seems to be no recognition by pro-socialists that their programs are being funded by capitalists, whose earnings or profits are taxes to provide for welfare and social programs. I'm not saying that such programs should not exist - I am just baffled that so many socialists decry and condemn the very source of the money that pays for what they wish. Doesn't Canada still have some independent (not state-owned) businesses that are taxed to pay for social programs? Wasn't Canada largely settled and grown due to the Hudson Bay Company? > I'm not even going to try to talk you out of your > political beliefs and I know for a fact you'll never > be able to talk me out of mine. There's no point in > anyone trying that because it's just one of those > down-to-the-core things. I really don't see that it all has to be one way or they other. That is why I get baffled here sometimes. I just don't understand why capitalism is magically excluded from the socialist equation. Why I think capitalism should not be killed off - I do think giving people individual initiative and reward does more to promote social progress in the long run than any other system. I'm not sure what socialists quite believe - something like everyone should have the same money and goods as everyone else, regardless of effort or merit so everything is fair. But it doesn't quite work in the long run. If that system happened to all of us, someone is still going to have to clean the toilets and gather the garbage and do jobs that others don't think are fair. In countries where there has been total socialism (communism) many people have been forced to work at what the government decides at the point of a gun or threat of execution. In that light, a free system just seems a bit more human to me. I'm with Mack on this one, I would straight to Dog Eat Dog, either the title track or Tax Free, both of which are bitter snapshots of Reagan's mid-80's America with politicians and conservative religious fanatics holding hands, and the hyprocrisy of it all...interesting to me politically because separation of church & state was what the founding fathers of our country seemed to be trying to avoid. Not that Reagan was the first to do it, obviously, but it all seemed so calculated and behind-the scenes dirty. Plus it set a really bad precedent and drove some major wedges in our culture which have only gotten worse. Like Randy says, the lyrics are right there on the site for your perusal: http://www.jmdl.com/lyrics/TaxFree.cfm http://www.jmdl.com/lyrics/DogEatDog.cfm Hope that helps somewhat. The reason I'm not sure is that the picture was taken over 30 years ago, probably 1970-71, when Andrea and I were both in high school. (She went to the girls' catholic school and I went to the boys'.) We had friends whose parents had a house in Bayhead and we and our friends also spent time in Beach Haven. I even think I may have taken the picture. Though the photo is from a long time ago, Andrea did not look that much different as she aged. Although her hair was never that long after that. But, through much diligence, it remained the same color. Except, of course, when she wanted to go redder. Then the Moody Blues at City Center last week (they are sort of the anti-Dead, in that every concert is pretty much predictably the same, from what I have seen from the DVD's my wife owns and the concert we just saw. Ray Thomas has dropped out - for health reasons, I was told - replaced by a flutist/backup singer/guitarist/percussionist/Halle Berry look-alike. Distracting !!! Fun concert, but the second drummer/athlete was too loud most of the time - and almost drowned out the rest of the too-loud performance a few times (though not as irritating as the Emmylou debacle at Carnegie). I don't think I'll buy their new CD, but the oldies are still good. Tomorrow night Simon and Garfunkel at MSG ( how you ask ? I put in a call to my former next door neighbor from when I was a kid - he happens to own the Garden more or less at this point. Don't it always seem to go, you don't know what you got 'til you ........beg ;-)). Off to Ft. Lauderdale on Friday - for sun and fun, and son and grandson - review may have to wait a week or so. I think playing that version of BSN was a good choice and it sounded really good.Good advertising too for Joni as they showed the cover so well. As for the film, I was disappointed. It could have been so much better had they not decided to be so exclusive. Another funny thing about that film is that, out of 8 or more sub-plots/romantic relationships, there is no gay couple or character (Not Intended to Start a Gay Thread!). I hope it's not true that I have nothing better to do that look at sales on Amazon.com -- but it's true that sales of BSN have gone up dramatically since the film was released. Has been averaging at around #400 for a few weeks now (and was in the 3,000-4,000 range before). Is also in the top 1,000 on towerrecords.com. I'll go find something better to do. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Dec 2003 02:08:03 EST From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: andrea photo (NJC) In a message dated 12/2/03 10:51:04 PM Eastern Standard Time, kimerer@taconic.net writes: > Kate, I think you may be right.
