Hi, folks! With many many thanks to Martin, I've received this wonderful two cd set: not only it has authentic masterpieces, but also is performed by wonderfully gifted musicians, too! Note: a man named Les Ross is singing a song named "Magdalene Laundries" in my sunny house, oh joy! I don't need to add the rest of the people here (Maria King, Dave King, Anita Gabrielle, Martin Giles, Debra McGregor, Chris Marshall, Phil Moreton, Steph Crawshaw, Michelle Reed, Philippa Partington, Strings & Sally Clay: in order of appearance) are of the highest level! I can make a couple (or more) of copies to the people who're interested, to spread the joy! Have a Wonderful time! Emiliano NP: Not To Blame, Les Ross, 8 nov. My daughter had driven down from Connecticut to visit and she was treating me to dinner. she knows how much I love Joni so she just sat there and giggled at me! Joni was playing her V-8 and it sounded fantastic! Believe it or not, I have never seen her live but I don't feel deprived in any way. Her music fills me up so much and as I have said in the past, in my opinion, live for Joni doesn't get any better than Shadows and Light. I think the broadcast was taken from "Painting with Words and Music". Was that the special that so many of our Jonilistas attended? I think the date on the video was 1998. Help me out here! (Conversation - Joni) Hello, All - Wow, where do I begin? - the Joni Tribute Night Saturday, November 22, 2003 at The Main Street Cafe in Homestead, FL was a phenomenal success! I had extended the invitation to Pearl and Mingus a few weeks ago and was absolutely thrilled when they RSVPed in the positive, and even brought their significant others - it's always wonderful to put faces to names and to share something with those who feel equally heartfelt. I have a standing front and center table at Main Street - it was my pleasure to have them join me, my husband and friend Nancy for the festivities. We gathered together to celebrate the 60th birthday of an accomplished musician/songwriter/poet/painter/genius - to many of us, there is Joni... and then there is everyone else... :-) Big thanks go out to Laurie Oudin and Laura Sue, the Silver Nightingale for having the idea to do this Joni Tribute. We all three (separately) watched and were inspired by the American Masters special, Woman of Heart and Mind. When they came to me many months ago with the concept and asked if I'd like to participate, I suggested doing it in November for Joni's 60th birthday. I was honored to emcee the event and perform two of Joni's songs (Woman of Heart and Mind and Last Time I Saw Richard) as spoken word pieces - I asked forgiveness in advance for whatever historical/sociological errors/omissions I made during the course of this evening (and there were a few!). I introduced myself as Susan Moss, a Joni-holic - I discovered Joni's music in high school (1968-72) and my line/joke of many years is that my then-boyfriend (now husband) and I Courted and Sparked to Blue... :-) Researching/compiling the between-song factoids/trivia, I felt as if I were back in college writing a term paper - the amount of reference material is overwhelming and I realized there was no way in hell I could cover everything (d*mmit!). I touched on highlights such as SIQUOMB, Little Green adoption/reunion, the Miles of Aisles Mick Jagger/Richard Nixon/Gomer Pyle fan comment, her bout with polio and resultant weird tunings/"chords of inquiry", her decision to miss Woodstock so as to appear on the Dick Cavett show, the many men in Joni's life, other artists who were influenced by Joni, the use of Joni-isms in everyday language (paved paradise, starmaker machinery, back to the garden), her mastery of language in her song lyrics, Joni's various Grammys and Hall of Fame Awards, etc. I promoted websearching of www.jonimitchell.com and www.jmdl.com... I still own Joni's first fourteen *albums* and brought them Saturday night to decorate the back wall of the stage - unfortunately, the duct tape only lasted most of the way through the first set, whereupon they began dropping like flies! It was a nice thought - in retrospect, I should have gone for the staple gun idea after all... :-) The line-up of local musicians was amazing! ~ Conversation - Laurie Oudin ~ Little Green - Laurie and Laura Sue, the Silver Nightingale ~ I Don't Know Where I Stand/I Think I Understand - Alex Kash ~ California - Laura Sue and Alex ~ Song To a Seagull - Laura Sue ~ Twisted - Lisa "Noodles" Hayden, Alex and Laura Sue, Mario ~ Morning Morgantown - Noodles ~ Marcie - Tom Keaton ~ Rainy Night House/Woodstock - Barbara Muze and DeeDee Finney (accompanied by Rob and Stuart) ~ Song For Sharon/Refuge of the Road - Sally Townes (accompanied by Stuart) ~ Hejira/For Free - Matthew Sabatella (accompanied by Damien Fuentes) ~ Cactus Tree - Laurie ~ Big Yellow Taxi/Free Man In Paris/Both Sides Now/Amelia - The Pathfinders (Laurie, Scott Emmons, Mario Carvajal, Josh Aberman) ~ Circle Game - Everyone Before we broke for intermission, raffle giveaways were awarded from slips of paper filled out with attendees' name and/or phone number/e-mail - prizes included: ~ collage poster of Joni faces, created by Luke and Scott ~ event poster with color Joni photo, signed by all the performers ~ the book Voices: The Work of Joni Mitchell from the exhibition of her artwork at The Mendel Gallery ~ "unofficial" recording of Joni at Red Rocks CO, 1983, Wild Things Run Fast Tour ~"unofficial" recording of Joni and James Taylor, London, 1970 ~ Sweet 16, Volumes 1 and 2 (Joni Covers) - compiled by Bob... :-) ~ program from the 2000 Both Sides Now tour and a poster photocopy of a Hejira oil painting bought in Hawaii (donated by Pearl... :-) ~ framed 5" x 7" photo of Joni in Atlanta November 1998, blowing out her birthday candles and a framed 8" x 10" photo of Joni in West Palm Beach during her Both Sides Now Tour in 2000 (photos taken, and donated, by Mingus... :-) Joni has said, "I sing my sorrow and I paint my joy" - impossible to categorize, over the course of her career (and 22 albums), Joni Mitchell has pursued avenues of self-expression, heedless of commercial outcomes. Before we kicked into the last song with all the participating artists (and the audience), I paraphrased Ms. Mitchell herself: We've looked at Joni from all sides now from up and down from give and take from win and lose it's Joni's wisdom we recall we really don't know anyone... who's her equal... :-) I then asked everyone to raise a glass to toast Joni Mitchell, a Woman of Heart and Mind, and help us sing Happy Birthday - I repeat, what a night! Pearl/Steve and Mingus/David: thanks again for being there (rearranging your schedules and driving over 4 hours round-trip, respectively) - after sharing such a special evening with you all, we must stay in touch (when's the South Florida Joni-Fest? :-) Susan http://www.heartsdesireconcerts.com http://www.horseofadifferentcolorbooking.com "I want to be strong, I want to laugh along I want to belong to the living Alive, alive, I want to get up and jive I want to wreck my stockings in some juke box dive..." ~ Joni Mitchell ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 2003 21:44:50 +0100 From: Emiliano Subject: Fw: am i right??? NJC Mags, what a great show! Thanks for the report. I really love John. I've met a lot of singer-songwriter types in different social and professional situations, but when I had the chance to meet John, I could not even LOOK at him, though he was standing next to me in a group of people chatting. The more I adore someone, the more incapacitated I become in his/her presence. Which is why I am so impressed with everyone here who has met and spoken or shared an ENTIRE MEAL with JONI because if I were to come face to face with her I would surely burst into tears and collapse at her feet or become paralyzed and act as if I hadn't a clue who she was and walk right on by. sigh. Sometimes I wonder if the "recognition" you talk about isn't their own fear that maybe they might, if not today, then maybe one day, be just a little bit attracted to someone of their own sex? Just a thought... If your Dad is a homophobe, does that mean he doesn't love *you*? Sorry if I'm being too personal, but I can't imagine NOT loving my children. They'd have to do something really bad (like premeditated murder, maybe) for me to stop loving them. Somehow, being gay just isn't on the list of things I might possibly stop loving them for (I don't have a list, but sometimes I wonder - what does it take for a parent to stop loving their kids? I just can't imagine not loving mine, even though there are times they drive me completely nuts.) > i can't > tell you why a person would be threatened, i suppose > there are as many reasons > as there are people. fear is a very personal thing > and can be a very > destructive thing. Sometimes I wonder whether some people aren't afraid that gay-ness is perhaps contagious or something? I dunno! >> as always you bring up some very interesting points. as i said, to me it seems the threat is as unique as the person who is threatened. some people are truly afraid that "gayness" is contagious or something that one can be somehow, even without their cognitive consent, they can be influenced into. a "whole world" of people believe that it is a gay persons mission to enlist as many others into the fold as possible, like army recruiters looking for prospective new soldiers. fear is an overwhelmingly powerful emotion. you question about my dad; my answer may seem counterintuitive, yes my dad loves me very much, he just hates with the fires of hell the fact that i am gay. turns into a sticky situation quite often. i love my dad and respect his beliefs and praise his conviction, but protect myself by distance, silence (though i keep no secrets, i just don't start discussions) acceptance, forgiveness and love. thank you for asking :) peace noel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Nov 2003 19:58:14 -0800 (PST) From: magsnbrei Subject: happy birthday to my honeyboi *november 25th* NJC alas, i am once again swept out of the land of lurkedom for a very special birthday announcement....yes my little friends, i realize that it is not quite november 25th in this part of the world, however, our canadienne birthday faerie is in dire need of some beauty sleep ;-) so I shall make my announcement ce soir...
