I think of myself as being a lot more middle-of-the-road than my results came up with and that I'd end up a lot closer to the middle than I did. There were only two or three questions where I answered "extremely agree" or "extemely disagree." There were some where I would have liked it if they had a "neither agree nor disagree" choice, because they're not things I think are that important, or where I'd have to qualify it with a "depends on whether or not..." This meant I was then forced to decide on "agree" or "disagree". The concept of something like this is probably pretty good but it definitely looks biased to me. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 13:05:37 +0100 From: "Gillian Apter" Subject: RE: Spanish names NJC Re: Spanish names NJCI believe it Mike. For people on our list outside of our local news market, yesterday our highest court ruled that it was illegal under the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to bar gays from civil marriage. The court stipulated that the Legislature must amend marriage laws within 180 days, and conservatives in the legislature are balking, but legal experts say that they have no choice, and gay marriages must be allowed. A proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage will be difficult to undertake - it requires majority vote in the legislature for two consecutive years followed by a state-wide referendum, a minimum of three years during which gay marriages are mandated to take place. > The Town Clerks Office at Provincetown Town Hall is expecting "an army of license-seekers". 180 days falls on a Saturday in mid-May, so the first day possible to apply for a gay marriage license will be Monday, May 17th. Both applicants need to be present, but neither need to be residents. You will also need to provide a valid medical certificate, which can be obtained from your doctor (Outer Cape Health Services in P'town can also do the pre-marital blood work). There is a three day waiting period for issuing the marriage license, and it is valid for 60 days. > The marriage license will need to be signed by an ordained minister or justice of the peace. Massachusetts law also allows a friend or family member to apply for "special permission to perform a marriage" by contacting the Governor's office. (Since Governor Mitt Romney opposed gay marriages, it will be interesting to see if he will follow the law - it is worth a try.) The existing rules for obtaining a marriage license are on line at http://usmarriagelaws.com/search/united_states/massachusetts/index.shtml. > For information on accommodations and services in Provincetown, check with the Provincetown Business Guild's web site: http://www.ptown.org . You could of course interpret it sexually, but I've always heard it as a case of "just past the last minute cold feet"; that is to say that instead of leaving his bride at the altar, he takes the vows, seals it with a kiss, heads off for the honeymoon, and THEN gets hit with a big case of "Oh-my-God-what-have-I-done", can't consummate the marriage, spends the night in another room, and splits. I went back just now & read the 11/19 reviews of the record and it's obvious that this is a very complex work, not really one that can be dismissed with a simple "this sucks" or "this rocks". Really, Muller, I have read some very sophisticated analyses of Joni lyrics from you, so I am surprised you don't think this song is about sexual dysfunction." Well, "love" doesn't necessarily equate to doing the nasty...but I think your comment about it simply being bad songwriting probably rings more true than anything. Then again, from what Guzzi has told me...well, let's just say that sexual dysfunction is a hot topic with you and leave it at that. Next up, let's lyrically dissect Sammy Johns' song "Chevy Van"! It's up and down Hollywood and also Vine and a few other streets. You must come see Hollywood Blvd. again - it has been tremendously renovated, restored and revitalized since 1997 and is a top destination once again. The Kodak Theatre complex, where they are now hosting the Academy Awards, is fantastic. A funny aside - there was a group, whose name I forget, that spearheaded the Hollywood makeover. One faction in the group, however, wanted to clear out all the seedy businesses. The other faction argued that those seedy shops have always been on the Blvd. since the 1920s and it would be historically inaccurate to eliminate them and would be worse to make it all look like some new mall. The historically accurate faction won, so the seedy shops remain in place and have all been spiffed up LOL Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 15:53:48 -0500 From: "Joseph S.E. There should have been a "neither" or "sometimes" or "depends" or "rephrase the question" category. Because of the way the questions were posed I simply marked agree or disagree rather than "strongly agree" to try to moderate it. Then, as an experiment, I went back and took the test again and marked all my answers "strongly disagree" or "strongly agree" and my libertarian/authoritarian score went from -2.9 to - 9.2!!! That kind of indicates it may not be what you believe but how passionately you believe it that categorizes where you place on the graph.
