Because of the harmonies, it was difficult to hear his voice, and his guitar was out of tune. It was also bizarre to see the band, who were all young enough to be his sons, and they didn't quite nail those beautiful chord changes on the intro. The second tune (Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark And Hilldale) was much better, possibly helped by the fact that Arthur had dispensed with his guitar and could concentrate more on singing. And then there was an interview in which not a lot of sense was talked, although that may well be because Jools Holland is The World's Worst Interviewer. The finale was a stunning You Set The Scene, with full orchestral flourishes. Anyone else see this? If you play records or just want the artwork, you're eligible. Here are the particulars: ***************** SONG TO A SEAGULL ***************** This is a USA-issue, store bought LP. The vinyl is in VG+ condition but not mint. It's been played but it hasn't been abused. The drawing on the cover is in nice condition but the bottom of the cardboard sleeve is sliced. Joni's first album (often referred to incorrectly as "Joni Mitchell") showed us, right from the start, that she was not going to automatically deliver what people expected. Minimally engineered by David Crosby, Joni was mostly writing on the guitar. The final song CACTUS TREE foreshadowed a life of constant travel and short-lived but passionate attachments. *************** MILES OF AISLES *************** This is a USA-issue, store bought, 2 LP set. The vinyl is in VG+ condition. It's been played but it hasn't been abused. The cover carries a price sticker (not shown in the file photo). This album is Joni's first live album. For many of us, this album carried the first time we heard her laughter and charismatic between-song storytelling. Unlike the first CD pressings in the US, this 2 LP set has all of the patter that was ever made public. ****** MINGUS ****** a white-label promo, made in an early run for radio stations. Not mint condition, this record has been dropped as witnessed by a U-shaped gouge. It doesn't skip but there's an audible "SNICK.. SNICK" on the song "Sweet Sucker Dance". There's promo info embossed in gold lettering on the front. The cover has two price stickers on it and someone wrote "Selma #80" on the front in the upper right corner. ****************** SHADOWS AND LIGHT ****************** This is a USA-issue, store bought, 2 LP set. The vinyl is in VG condition. The cover and inner paper sleeves are wrinkled from exposure to water but of course, water did not affect the vinyl. The cover has a price sticker in the upper right corner. **************************** THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS **************************** This is a USA-issue, store bought LP. The vinyl is in VG+ condition. It's been played but it hasn't been abused. The cover carries a gouge where I tried to remove the price sticker (not shown in the file photo). The cover is embossed. This album is Joni's literary masterwork. He has asked me to help do his work for him by posting information here ;-) You must be between the ages of 25 and 40 and be a U.S. citizen living in Southern California. (I would love to go but am too old!) This is through Rotary International's Group Study Exchange Program and you can find more information here: http://www.rotary.org/foundation/educational/gse/index.html This is a really great community service organization. I have met a number of people from the L.A. chapter and they are very diverse and all fantastic. If you qualify and are interested or know of someone else who would be interested, please email me privately. I will be away for the weekend but will respond back when I return on Monday.
