Keep those responses coming in...only 14 so far, but since most are on digest I'm hoping for some good numbers today & tomorrow. In addition to my prediction that there will be votes for each song (or nearly each song) on Clouds as "most favorite", I am also interested in one other statistic, which I will dub "most controvertial". This title might go to the song that is named most frequently as "most favorite and least favorite", using the lesser of the two results as the answer. For example, if a song gets 5 most favorite votes and 3 least favorite votes, it beats out a song with, say 8 and 2, respectively. We already have at least one or two such inversions posted on the digest responses to date. IMO, that goes not only to taste, but to the overall high consistency of Joni's work - almost all of her songs are high quality. My Dad is a fan, but it took me awhile to really give her a listen (I'm 19, a sophomore at UC Berkeley); now she's my favorite recording artist. Hi, Cory, and a big welcome to the list. The people here are really amazing people (some are musicians and even songwriters), and we love it when new members post. There's so much to learn about the list, this site and the people here - in addition to the postings, members get together formally and informally, in their travels etc - in some cases at medium to large gatherings (one took place this past week in England, and one back in August in New York, where about 70 people attended, ranging in age from 14 to 80 , from all over the country and the world - not just New England- played songs, recorded etc over a 4 day period ) We "older folks" especially love it when younger members join - apart from the young blood, it goes to Joni's legacy. Congratulations, you are among the elite, the connoisseurs, - and the cognoscenti. My daughter (23) had no choice but to give her a listen - and rejected Joni for years (perhaps because it was too close to attempted indoctrination). This past year, she opened up to her, and is now a huge fan (and has introduced joni to her friends in Paris and now Oxford). Your choices are astute - but you may well find yourself waking up one day in amazement at your "least favorite" choices. I once felt the same way about The Banquet, Black Crow and The Priest - but the latter nearly got my vote yesterday for most favorite (still edged out by Circle Game), while Black Crow did get my vote as most favorite (but on the Shadows and Light disc - live version). What turns you on the most - the music, the lyrics, the singing, the arrangements - or the whole package ? Tell us more about yourself. If you do not have the Shadows and Light DVD (and the Joni Mitchell - WOHAM DVD), those are two investments that I would recommend as next additions to your collection. I know that 'Ugly Man' is supposed to be about W and the sense of 'Tell Somebody' is pretty clear. Anyway I got to thinking about Rickie being politicized and trying to combine this with her art and I started thinking about the following excerpt from a letter written by Virginia Woolf to a novice writer that I had just read last night: 'I think your poetry and your realism are at present tripping each other up; but I remember this (how condescendingly I am writing!) in my own beginnings: two instincts each running away, and seeming to refuse to combine. Both are genuine in you; which is very attractive to me; the poet and the realist; but I am sure that writers thus complicated with two points of view develop more slowly and blunderingly than the simpler sort.' It seems to me that both Joni and Rickie Lee were realists with a flair and instinct for poetry right from the start. I don't see that either one of them developed 'slowly' or 'blunderingly', however. But when I listen to 'Living It Up' or 'Don't Interrupt the Sorrow' I get a sense of someone trying to communicate hard, not necessarily pretty realities in unsentimental but very poetic words. With the day off for my tooth extraction and the follow-up drugs :-), I got to thinking again about my ultimately mixed feelings about Travelogue (including my sense of disappointment that the project might have succeeded with 'something' different - perhaps a different arranger, or perhaps a few arrangers, or was it the song selection, or too much orchestration, or perhaps just too much - i.e., too much of a project for both the creators and the listeners). I realize that T has some critics who feel it is without redeeming value, and others who feel it is a great work. I felt it was somewhere in between. So, I got to thinking about which cuts I liked the best, and wondered if I shortened it from two 11 track CD's to one, would that help ? So, I started by picking the 11 re-creations that I liked the most, and then set about the task of re-ordering them. At that point, I came to a couple of conclusions and observations: 1. The task of ordering these songs must have been quite problematic for Joni. There were so many "big" songs that needed to be separated, and naturally there was no intentionally created 'theme' to the writings (which were culled from songs over a 30 year period). 2. Despite the need for 'change of pace', there were no real "love songs" on this record - why not, I wonder ? I surmise that Joni was looking for songs she felt were "important" songs, by and large, and perhaps had reached a point in her life where she viewed personal songs of romance to not be inherently important. Hmmm. But "Love" was OK in the sense that its plane was universal and spiritual rather than personal and corporal. 3. I discovered that I had pretty strong reasons for the songs I ditched - some, because I did not like the arrangements, a couple because they have not been among my favorites, but several because they just did not lend themselves to full orchestration, by the nature of the art itself (especially For the Roses and The Circle Game) Anyway, I digress. I ended up breaking the one CD into two sides - one of which I saw a more along the lines of universal / spiritual / societal, and the other a bit more personal in tone (one could argue about my placement). I ended up with the following order: Side One Otis & Marlena Slouching Toward Bethlehem Judgement of the Moon and Stars The Sire of Sorrow (Job's Sad Song) God Must Be a Boogie Man Side Two Hejira You Dream Flat Tires Cherokee Louise Chinese Cafe / Unchained Melody Be Cool Refuge of the Roads I will be trying to figure out how to burn these onto a CD, so I can listen to this subset and see if it increases my enjoyment. I wondered if this could lead to another poll - your 11 'most favorite' songs on Travelogue - whence to formulate a consensus single CD. Also, I wondered how skewed the voting would end up (i.e., would it be a tightly bunched set of selections, surrounding the 50% mark, or would some songs garner a very high percentage of votes and others a very small percentage). Anyway, if y'all want to have your crack at your "favorite 11 from T", I will be happy to compile the survey and report back the results. Again, you can keep your choices anonymous by sending them to me, or you can post them to the list (I'll keep my eyes open). We can tackle ordering them after the selections are done ;-) Bobsart For your convenience, the full set list is Otis And Marlena Amelia You Dream Flat Tires Love Woodstock Slouching Toward Bethlehem Judgement Of The Moon And Stars The Sire Of Sorrow (Job's Sad Song) For The Roses Trouble Child God Must Be A Boogie Man Be Cool Just Like This Train Sex Kills Refuge Of The Roads Hejira Chinese Cafi Cherokee Louise The Dawntreader The Last Time I Saw Richard Borderline The Circle Game ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 22:31:32 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Rickie Lee Jones in Toronto - njc --- Bob.Muller@Fluor.com wrote: > > Wow, thanks for the great report Catherine...I am > very jealous, especially > as RLJ isn't making a Southeast US pass on her tour, > not yet anyway. It was in listening to people here on the jmdl talk about her that my interest in her was renewed. She sang at least two (maybe more) songs from her new album - "Ugly man" and "Tell someone" and they were brilliant, so I will certainly buy her new CD. I hadn't heard any of it before, but had heard about it, some good, some bad reviews - my review, based on what I heard last night, is very, very, very good. After singing these two songs, she said something along the lines of, "What the f*ck went wrong with my country?" The venue wasn't large - it's more like a dancehall than a concert hall. The seating was just folding chairs all lined up, and the audience was right up to the stage, so it was so much more intimate than the usual concert. She was talking to the audience. People were yelling out, "We love you, Rickie!" and she'd say, "I love you too!" Then someone yelled, "Happy birthday, Rickie!" and she said, "Well, thank you - I had a very nice one." And at one point she said she needed a drink and it had to be Absolut. So someone brought her a drink and she tasted it and said, "This isn't vodka! It's Jack Daniels!" People kept bringing her drinks and she said everyone needed a good cocktail. (I thought she had given up drinking. Hmmm. She must have given up smoking though because when we went in, people were told, "No cameras and no smoking, at the request of the artist." Which is fine by me - my sinuses appreciated that. She was supposedly finished the show but said she'd stick around a while longer because she was having fun. When she came back for her encore she did about five or six more songs, the last one by herself. She told us all we should have another drink and someone yelled, "On you?" and she answered back, "I'm good." The guys in her band all looked like they were having a really good time too, lots of smiling and laughing and kidding around. If she wasn't a singer, I'm sure she'd make a great actress. She tells wonderful stories and her body movements when she sings are amazing - if she's singing a painful song, you can feel the pain, and when she's happy, everybody's happy. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 22:37:42 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Rickie Lee Jones in Toronto - njc --- Kate Bennett wrote: well ya just > can't see everyone > all the time huh? So true and why is it that a BUNCH of people you reaaallly like decide to come to town around the same time? I really can't afford this stuff, but I did it anyway. Took the kids to see John Mayer last week, took myself to see Rickie Lee last night - cripes! what a social butterfly! and I'd kind of like to see Jane Siberry who's doing a show in December, but maybe I should pace myself a bit. I really CAN'T afford it - but I need to get out sometimes! The property tax bill can wait! I really wanted to see Springsteen too - he was here a month or two ago, but the tickets for that in Toronto were either $35 (which was nosebleed country at Skydome) or $95 - nothing in between and $95 is too rich for my blood and my guilt wouldn't let me rationalize my way into buying even one! She certainly does tend to slur her words a lot in addition to some of the weird vowel-bending that she does in some parts. And many of her words can be kind of odd anyway. She sang, "Ghostyhead" last night, which is an odd song with odd lyrics (but haunting. Which is good, as the word "ghost" appears in it). I'd love to get the CD but hey! it seems to be out-of-stock/out-of-print (she was pleased when people clapped and cheered when she mentioned it because she said it was only for sale for about six months.) ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 22:46:15 EST From: HOOPSJOHN1@aol.com Subject: Re: Janis ian's website < I just want a chance to rave about Janis Ian.She seems to me to be such a wonderful, caring person. How many other famous artists respond personally to people on thier website, and in such a warm, kind, real manner?very, very few,I'm sure...> and she is so good at it too. gotta like a celeb who takes time for the peeps ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 23:04:29 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Travelogue "Top 11" - A new poll ? I amazingly won 2 tickets to her show in Columbus, a stroke of incredible luck considering that at $40 a piece, there is no way I could have gone otherwise. She was in great spirits, certainly compared to the performance I caught here back in 1983 for The Magazine tour where she left after 45 minutes and refused to return for an encore. Interestingly, she did only 1 encore this time, My Funny Valentine. I don't think she was drinking, as was reported at the Toronto venue. I did see her once at the Coconut Grove-a surprise concert during the Ghostyhead sessions. She was bombed! It was a treat to see her here the other night--especially when she played the piano. I was really thrilled that she played "Deep Space" which is one of my favorites. Hope you are all well. On her website Karin Berquist of "Over The Rhine", mentions Joni's "BLUE" as one of the pivotal documents in her youth. OtR has a new album, OHIO, and there's a Joni mention. I was leaving this stone unturned, like a Bouncing Betty, so that I'd know when some JMDLers came along the trail and "discovered" this new album. Since no one has uncovered it, I guess it means that inspite of my tireless Pimping for OtR, no one bought the album, OHIO. In addition, on the new album by Over The Rhine, she's revisiting her teenage home where the strip-mining has finally stopped... - ---------- Hello Ohio The back roads I know Ohio Like the back of my hand Alone Ohio Where the river bends And it's strange to see your story end In my life I"ve seen a thousand dreams Through the threshers all torn to pieces And the land lay bear Someone turned a profit there And a good son lost his life in a strip pit When the sun went down we would all leave town And light our fires in Egypt Bottom And the reservoir was just as good for Joni 'Cause we knew we would Dream outloud in the night air Holly said, Don't go inside the children's home Mary said, Don't leave your man alone Valerie was singin' to the radio Ohio - ---------- Let's do the math: 1. Karin mentions Joni's BLUE. 2. Karin invokes the Great One's name in lyric, and 3. The mention is followed by advice for the love-lorn. I'd say that's probably enough evidence to recommend this as a "Joni-in-song" mention. What say ye? Bob Muller asked: My heavens! Why would you not include "The Dawntreader"? One of the few reasons to own Tlog. .....don't know if I can come up with 11 tracks though - is there an EP or CD-single option? ;~) Well, if it is any consolation, Dawntreader was my number 12 - and perhaps the song I felt least strongly about leaving off. However, I fully expect to feel the same way about some of my choices as they are left off of others' lists. Again, my negativity toward T feels less pronounced than yours - I genuinely like about half the efforts, even by comparison to the original versions. And I am sort of surprised that T's critics do not seem to "get" the virtues of the better efforts on this recording. In answer to your question, I find The Dawntreader (a song that I loved from STAS) to be closer to ingenue work lyrically - and one that was better treated with guitar alone than with the orchestra. Also, the arrangement did not add much that was not already captured in the original, IMO - really, a wonderful composition by Joni from the beginning. So, that's why ultimately I left it off. As far as finding enough tracks goes, in this case, the whole concept relies on everyone picking their 11 "most favorite" - or if you prefer "least unfavorite". And yes, I think that the votes of those who dislike T are just as important to this process as those who love T. I know y'all love the songs - surely the results are not horrible in an "absolute" sense (the songs are just too strong) - even if one views them as inferior in a relative sense to the originals. Hope I get your list (even if you want to caveat the ones you actually "dislike the least").
