I have always loved that album, every note and every word. It's as if the albums immediately preceding it - masterpieces like HOSL, Hejira, DJRD - were leading up to this risky adventure. But as early as Blue, Joni was demonstrating the kind of spontaneous vocal flexibility and keen ear that reached its apex (imho) with Mingus. It has always been an album appreciated by the few and loved only by the aficionados: it was destined to be. No other "popular" singer/songwriter of the late 1970s could have come anywhere near it: not as vocalist, lyricist, or guitarist. I hope that now, after her 60th birthday, Joni reflects on it as an opportunity to be proud rather than bitter. Mingus is, to me, a great achievement, all the more profound because its reach sometimes exceeds its grasp. And, truth be told, I'm happy that, as Tesser points out, Herbie Hancock is reduced in the mix. The album belongs to Mingus and Mitchell, with Pastorius as the obvious front runner instrumentally. Someone told me recently that we're living in an age of mediocrity. Fair enough - although people have probably been saying that since the 14th century. Well, in my lifetime, Joni Mitchell collaborated with Charles Mingus to produce an album that is intimidating and formidable, but is anything but mediocre. F*cking amazing, Joni! And thanks...... Problems? a) People need high-speed connections (as has been stated) b) People need a high-degree of IT literacy to deal with multi-part postings to newsgroups. Even with the right tools, the process is a frustrating one littered with issues of article propagation and retention issues, then the fun and games of trying to reassemble a 45 part usenet post, decode it, unzip it, etc. And when the middle post out of 45 gets lost, it's a royal pain in the y'know. c) It's a lot more like "publishing", should any legal types happen across it, than either a PermaVine or something like the Direct Connection peer-to-peer thing, which only "we" (the list) made use of. - --Chris Marshall chrisAThatstand.org (AIM: Chr15Marshall) "If you're ever lost, I'll beat the world to finding you" Stryngs, "Bobblehats and Beer" Band website, with downloads, at http://www.stryngs.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 2003 10:19:07 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: WTRF Tour "At the Houston show she also picked up a saxaphone and played it on a number." It was only $7.99 so I knew I could flip it on ebay at a profit. One guy got $46 for this title, which is ridiculous but it points up the fact that people just can't find SACDs "at the mall". This is progress? Over the years, I've noticed that the ebay ads which have something interesting, some individual mark, do better than generic ads. I guess this is fueled by something I learned in marketing class: if customers spend some time interacting with your brand they are more likely to buy. I resurrected the image of Bryan and Cindy watching PazFest in 2000 from the balcony of The Howlin' Wolf in New Orleans. I am afraid that Joni will have to wait until she is 62 to start collecting. As far as I know, you can't "write it in" for Social Security - so, if you were to hang out at her local Social Security office starting 2 years from now, a sighting is possible - but you might want to keep your eye out for Art Nouveau while you are at it ;-) In any event, Joni cannot collect full benefits until age 66 (however, actuarially, it would be in Joni's interest to start at age 62, since the reduction factors for early commencement are somewhat more favorable than "actuarially equivalent" for 'healthy' lives - and much more favorable than actuarially equivalent for less than healthy lives. There you go Joni, some free actuarial advice !). When she collects at age 62, her benefits will probably be around $1,500 per month (assuming she has been a good girl and paid all of her self-employment taxes over the years). If she waits until 66 (which she shouldn't), it will probably be around $2,000 per month. Bobsart ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Nov 2003 12:04:16 EST From: Bobsart48@aol.com Subject: Re: More on Social Security - NJC (actually, VLJC) And AMO asked again "(Or don't you do that sort of thing in Bushwop-land?)" Well, here in the US, the primary (nearly universal) national government retirement scheme is called Social Security (the "Old Age" part of the Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance, or OASDI). Social Security, along with Medicare (the old age health insurance scheme), are paid for with what are called FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) taxes for employees - and with what are called "self employment taxes" in the case of people who are self employed (like Joni). The OASDI tax scheme is "regressive", but the benefits scheme is even more progressive than the tax scheme is regressive, so everybody ought to feel pretty good about it (except the cheap and greedy segment among the wealthy who understand the system so thoroughly that they know they are being gypped a little bit, and/or can't see the forest from the trees in terms of the wisdom of having a stable annuity scheme as a safety net against poverty among the "superannuated" - I love that word. That includes our president, who has the wrong view on this issue - IMO, defined contribution schemes for Social Security are folly from the standpoint of social policy - and I lean toward the right, so there. The mutual fund people love the DC concept, too, since some of the DC individual account balances would be invested in mutual funds. Revolting). Anyway, the benefits I (in my earlier e-mail) projected Joni might receive above would be the same for anyone her age who has earned at or above $87,000 (adjusted backward for inflation) over the years. If one earned half that (say, $43,500 in 2003, adjusted backward for inflation over the years), he or she would receive far more than 50% as much - closer to 80% as much (that's a rough estimate - I do not have my tables in front of me). That's what I mean by a progressive benefit scheme. An even more egregious example of the progressive benefit scheme is my wife, who only worked in covered employment for 13 years (from 1971 - 1983) and paid a total of $8,500 in OASDI taxes and $1,500 in Medicare taxes during that period (matched by her employer, for a grand total of $20,000 in taxes), and who is now entitled to receive, in return, $600 per month for life starting at age 62, indexed for inflation, plus full Medicare benefits starting at 65. Of course, she will be entitled to even more as my spouse when I turn age 62. That's how "poor people" in the US benefit under the Social Security system. And many liberals still complain about the regressive tax rates !!!!!!!!!!! What are they trying to do, incite a backlash ????? Anyway, the tax rate for employees and employers is 7.65% each (for a total of 15.3% of pay). This breaks down as 6.2% for OASDI and 1.45% for Medicare. The tax on OASDI stops after $87,000 in earned income in 2003 (the Medicare tax has no cap, so the executives in the US making, say, $10M per year pay $145,000 in Medicare taxes each year - as do their employers). For self-employment taxes, the 15.3% is reduced to something closer to 14%, since the first 7.65% tax is deducted from income before computing the 15.3% tax. I am not an expert on what constitutes self-employment income, so that is a factor - but I assume that royalties count. For Joni, then, the Social Security tax is over $12,000 per year (assuming she has self-employment income of $87,000 or more). I can't even guess at her Medicare taxes, since I have no idea what her self-employment income amounts to, after business deductions, etc. Medicare is more complicated, but here the benefit scheme is 100% progressive - - everyone gets the same benefits. Prescription drugs are not covered, in most cases. (Some poor people get Rx drug coverage through state-run Medicaid, however). On top of the public sector plans, there is a rather substantial voluntary pension plan environment. A substantial minority of people are covered by defined benefit plans (covering workers for some 30,000 or so companies, including many if not most large companies, and covering what we call public sector employees - teachers, government workers, police, firemen, etc). In addition, a majority of workers are eligible to participate in DC plans (most of which are called 401(k) plans after the Internal Revenue Code section that allows for them), wherein employees contribute pre-tax dollars to their accounts, which are usually fully or partially matched by employers). Much needs to be done to improve this scheme, but it is an important part of retirement income for millions of Americans How does that compare with the Social Security and retirement scheme over in "UK - land" ?
