The UK press has had no choice to be secretive about the actual allegation: a court injunction was taken out to prevent the press publishing the direct allegation. So, what they're saying is... " The allegation that Prince Charles was involved with an alleged incident within the Royal Household a few years ago is without foundation. The allegation about the incident a few years ago was investigated and found to have no basis in fact. " Or thereabouts. Of course, everyone in the UK pretty much knows what the allegation a few years ago was, since it's been mentioned regularly enough in the context of the somewhat turbulent phase that the Royal Family is in at the moment. The press just can't talk about it. And I'm not going to either... In the UK, some very disturbing parallels get drawn between internet postings and publishing, getting posters, website owners, list owners etc. into trouble. There's a lot of very nervous UK chat forum operators kicking around at the moment. (Just to give an idea of what the court injunction can do, according to the lawyer I heard on the radio yesterday: If you *know* about the injunction, and you then *publish* the allegations in question, you can go straight to jail, do not pass go, and definitely don't collect $200. This raises some very interesting questions about freedom of the press and responsibility of the press, as well as the predicaments the Royals find themselves in by virtue of their being constantly in the public eye. On the one hand, it's not even clear what the allegations are, so people are guessing. The guesses could be totally off the mark. So rumour feeds on rumour. If the allegations are what the rumour mill says they are, I don't see it as such a big deal, but then again, I suppose a lot of people would. If people were more open about this sort of thing, it would have been public information ages ago and not news. (Here I am skirting around the issue as well, but that's out of respect for Chris, as well as to see if I can make my point without stating what "it" is either.) You would think, if there are rumours going around, the Royals would want to be honest and upfront about just what these allegations are, get it out in the open and so on. On the other hand, if it is just gossip and rumour, then the press ought to have more responsibility and realize this is NOT news. Back to my previous statement about slow news days. The world press is one big Jerry Springer show, and we're all doomed. If the allegations are true, then Charles's best bet, IMO, would be to stand up and tell the truth. If they're untrue, and he stands up and tells the truth, no one's going to believe him. Maybe he should say they're true, even if they're not. In which case, he's lying. No matter what he does, he loses. The Royals could use a good spin doctor, don't you think? ;) ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2003 08:24:44 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Charles njc OK, so the allegation isn't just the Prince who would be Queen. The writing and editing are meticulous, reflecting the attention to detail that Joni's work possessed and deserved in return. There are so many moments that I appreciate about Ms. Lacy's 'work of art' - I just think it's wonderful. I really ought to take notes and list a bunch of them that push my buttons. Here are two: 1. In the early scene of Maidstone in winter, with Urge for Going playing, immeditately after the line "now the warriors of winter, they gave a bold, trimuphant shout", the horses neigh gently but audibly. Whether one views that touch as nice, corny, cute or banal, it was obviously borne of love. 2. In the scene covering Joni's first appearance at Carnegie Hall, a male voice from the audience shouts out the best "I love you" and Joni laughs. However, that particular "I love you" and follow-up laugh came, in fact, from her second Carnegie Hall concert (right at the beginning of the 5th song - Blue). That Susan Lacy went out of her way to look for the best "I love you" from those two concerts in order to capture the spirit of that first Carnegie night (Nash follows with the words "The audience were ecstatic that night") again shows the kind of love that fired the passion with which this project was completed. Susan Lacy may not have received a Grammy for her writing and direction of WOHAM, but she surely would have gotten my vote. Bobsart PS - I was at that second Carnegie Hall concert, but felt too much fear to shout "I LOVE YOU" right out loud. That was someone else. My internal reaction then as now - "get in line, pal". ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2003 09:22:15 EST From: CDTraderJohn@aol.com Subject: great articles about lyrics, songs and songwriters I don't usually do a post like this, but I was trying to find the name of a song lyric that was running through my head (it turned out to be "The Ballad of Dan Moody" by Michael Smith -- I knew it from Steve Goodman) and a Google search led me to this site, amongst others. A gallery owner in BC who received an impromptu piano lesson from Joni on a hide-covered piano in his gallery. A tribute from a man who remembers hearing Joni composing the song Carey in her room at the B&B where he worked in Athens, Greece. He also remembered seeing her with her American friend, Carey, who indeed carried a cane and wore long black boots. But the best story, was from a woman who heard one of Joni's concerts at the Hibou in Ottawa way back. Joni had finished a long engagement there (1967?) and had stayed on with friends in the Gatineau Hills (in Quebec), just across the river from Ottawa. The small town nearby is called Chelsea. During a return engagement to the Hibou, the caller claimed that Joni introduced her new song, Chelsea Morning, there, in reference to Chelsea, Quebec! So is this, in fact, the origin of this celebrated song? The set list included You Turn Me On I'm a Radio, from MOA, Facelift (fitting for a 60th birthday celebration, said the caller!) My parents owned a cottage north of there and in the 60s we drove through Chelsea (about 20 miles north of Ottawa) every weekend. If "The traffic wrote the words" there would be hardly enough for one verse, I'm sure the population wasn't more than 100 with one gas station/store. "The streets are paved with passersby" would have referred to the flattened skunks and raccoons on the highway. In the last 15 years or so, Chelsea and the area has become a haven for artists and musicians. It was like they say animals get before a quake...but I don't think this is about that as jeff has a special relation with ravens/crows & says that things like this have always been a sign of something very good about to happen...& when I went to look at them out of the window & they all looked at me & then stopped cawing... 2 flew off & 3 stayed on the wire...they REALLY wanted my attention! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Nov 2003 09:07:58 -0800 From: Phyliss Ward Subject: Re: Joni's Birthday card That didn't work for me but try this... http://jonimitchell.com/BDCard2003/BDCardFront2003.html Phyliss RoseMJoy@aol.com wrote: >it's here... >http://jonimitchell.com/BDCard2003/BDCardFront2003.html[Unable to display image] > >[demime 0.97c-p1 removed an attachment of type image/jpeg which had a name of bdcard2003front2.jpg] ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2003 18:14:07 +0100 (CET) From: Alex Oudshoorn Subject: usenet posts of vcd's It's all great that vcd's are mailed around as permavines, but wouldn't it be much easier for lost of people if they were just posted usenet groups for everybody to download. Maybe this comes as a unconfortable idea to many collectors of joni material, to give away all their material so easily. And besides that, people might use the material and sell it to make money out of it. If that is your fear, then why not post it to some quiet newsgroup using encryption and post the password to the joni list, or just to the people that are interested. Oh yeah. I grudged every song that was not Joni's, every topic that was not Joni, every letter that was not about Joni. How's that for being an ungratefrul wretch? I was expecting two full hours of stories about meeting Joni; I cleared my schedule so I could bask; and all we got was a half-hour, which flew by in about three minutes. I don't know why I thought they could devote the entire show; got my wires crossed somehow. If you heard my request, Face Lift, you probably heard my letter about Joni giving her full attention to my son Emil at the art gallery in Saskatoon. Before that they played Chelsea Morning (the writer who requested it said she was there when Joni stood in for a performer who couldn't make it, and first played the song, brand new, after writing it about Chelsea, Que.) and You Turn Me On I'm a Radio. There was a Greek guy who wrote about hearing her writing/practising Carey in her room (#4) in a cafi/hostel in Greece; he said he was struck by her beauty at that time, and that he remembered the boyfriend Carey being with her there. The broadcasters said they had received a lot of tributes to Joni and that they were very touching; one said she had been in tears at her computer as she read. All three of the broadcasters are also fans. "Why didn't you people send these to her?" they asked. I thought yeah, why didn't we?, so I emailed them Sam Feldman's address and suggested they forward them. I like that idea and I'm sure others might as well. I think it would only work for people with high-speed internet access though and many people don't have that. I've been reluctant to agree to the vine thing because there's just too much pressure with copying it and getting the original out to someone else within a short period of time - and lately I've been living in fear of my computer crashing and my not being able to afford to get it fixed.
