But peace does. I never have been able to buy the anomaly. That we make war to have peace. Any of the things that this particular administration is touting?it is the exact opposite thing. In order to have safety in our land, we spy on each other. It's the fox in the henhouse kind of philosophy and I just don't buy it. For us, to live in truth is how you live in peace. You are able to say you make mistakes, you are able to say if you really want to free the people of Iraq, or if there are hidden agendas there. A lot of us think there are and they're just not being talked about. Yet, they seem to be glaring. As Chris points out, the difference between his comment above and Tea Leaf is that Joni uses the offices of her art itself to point at the dream of peace that we all share (and which I suspect she undestands is not presently attainable with a radical pacifist's action plan), while Chris expresses his own not so impressively thought out opinion via the medium of this interview itself rather than via his art - he should stick to TLP to do that. (He also seems to have his head stuck in the sand of absolutes - would he have believed in the Holocaust ? In what the white man did to the Indians in North America ? Need I go on ? He does not think war makes beauty in any way - ever, even after it is over ? The whole point of terrorism and evil is that it - axiomatically - forces people of good will out of their game plan, relegating absolute peace to dream status until either the terrorism is wiped out or the targeted victims of the terrorsim are wiped out - with the complicity of those who would allow the terrorists to have their way in the name of 'peace at all costs' - that is, passive resistance. War is not a simple matter - it is complex, there are no absolutes, and unfortunately, it needs to be studied - that is obvious IMO, but apparently not to Chris.) This is a magical date: we're celebrating the birth, the life of the greatest SingerSongwriter of all time: Joni Mitchell! Thanks you for all this Beauty! In the high school I work there's an experiment taking place in playtime: it's a "radio station" open to pupils who want to participate: Today, our truly friend & fan Emiliano managed to take care of the entire programme: in first set (from 10:10 to 1:30) Morning Morgatown was heared through all the High school, delighting every people's ears! Emiliano took the mike to anounce a very special edition of the show: the birthday fest of the ONE; he talked about growing on, developing the art with no boundaries, etc. Note: the official language of this radio show is Galician, not spanish! Then played All I Want & Electricity. After a short speech about accepting differences and weirdness, Twisted put an joyful en to this first set. (Emiliano then ran to the smoker's room for a quick rest before explaining differences between emic/etic, but that's another story :-) in second set (12:10 to 12:30), after hearing Passion Play (When All The Slaves Are Free) took place a passionate lecture of its lyrics (somewhat edited to adjust to short time). Then, one of Emiliano's favourite speeches about the need to take one's helm, to be the captain of our fate, to try to arrange one's troubles instead of waiting for another one to resolve them (alluding to polio illness, etc). Show came to its end with a medley of Circle Game/Dreamland. Many pupils (mostly girls) came to ask about these songs, and some of them declared enjoying it! My Best to You! Have a Wonderful time! Happy Birthday, Ms Mitchell, Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Nov 2003 10:01:01 -0500 From: Subject: Joni LPs for sale I have some duplicate Joni LPs on ebay: http://tinyurl.com/u2m6 I wrote text for the auctions, or course. Some samples: - --- Thank God for Bob Dylan. If he hadn't kicked down the barriers and cleared the way, nobody would know about the finest singer-songwriter of his generation: Joni Mitchell. If you think of Joni as a hippie chick with a guitar, you haven't even scratched the surface. - --- Anyway, Joni doesn't work with everyone who rings her up but Charles Mingus would not take "no" for an answer. I guess he saw a friend of spirit in her strong will. So, Charlie gave her some tunes to work with. Joni wrote stories about Mingus, Lester Young, a lucky dry cleaner in Las Vegas, and the wolf spirit within all artists. The last one is especially poiniant because it was Charlie's farewell to Lester and here it's become Joni's farewell to Charlie too. If you think of Joni as a hippie chick with a guitar, you haven't a clue. For "downbeat magazine", jazz reviewer Leonard Feather started out with "This is a wonderful piece of work." --- - -------- If you think of Joni as a hippie chick with a guitar, you don't yet have a clue about her gifts. - ---- This album is Joni's literary masterwork. She masterfully tackles the Big Themes like honor, love, the church, civic duty, and self-destruction. If you think of Joni as a hippie chick with a guitar, she broke free from that stereotype way before she built this album. Joni put a synthesizer on top of Burndi warrior drums long before Paul Simon went to South Africa. A lot of what Joni laid down here in 1975 is related to the slinky-cool music with cynically hot lyrics that Walter and Donald create on their Steely Dan albums. Joni's birthday is November 7th. Thanks for EVERYTHING, Joni! ALL of it. - ---------- This album is Joni's first live album. For many of us, this album carried the first time we heard her laughter and charismatic between-song storytelling. Unlike the first CD pressings in the US, this 2 LP set has all of the patter that was ever made public. This album is back in the good old days when Joni played piano. - --------- This is the album that defined for our generation, the pinnacle of songwriting when an artist is holding nothing back. She was hurting yet, luckily for us, she had some amazingly incisive and often breathtakingly cathartic skill with rendering a story. This is not navel-gazing. This is the sound of a phoenix burning and beginning again. - -------- Joni's first album (often referred to incorrectly as "Joni Mitchell") showed us, right from the start, that she was not going to automatically deliver what people expected. Minimally engineered by David Crosby, Joni was mostly writing on the guitar. The final song CACTUS TREE foreshadowed a life of constant travel and short-lived but passionate attachments. - ----------- Lama ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Nov 2003 10:03:11 -0500 From: Subject: MINGUS, the cd, ROCKS On today,Joni's birthday, I want to set the record straight on MINGUS. Usually, there is a common theme or thread, though it is not a requirement. On Fridays, the 9 a.m. hour is the show-within-a-show "Women's Music Hour," and consequently, the Select-A-Sets, like the rest of the hour, feature female musicians. Today, the Select-A-Set was: Folky Joni, represented by "Big Yellow Taxi" from "Ladies of the Canyon"; "Jazzy Joni," represented by "Drycleaner from Des Moines" from "Mingus"; and "Mature Joni," represented by "A Case of You" from "Both Sides Now." I did not catch the name of the set submitter. During the hour, also observed were the Nov. 8 birthdays of Bonnie Raitt (turning 54) and Rickie Lee Jones (turning 49). The in-studio guest was (guessing at the given-name spelling) Kyler England, from North Carolina (I think she said Raleigh, but the signal faded at that point), now based in New York City. Kyler cited Joni as an influence, and said her mother "always played Joni." So Here's To You, Joni...you are the most gifted writer, singer, and performer I've ever seen. The most beautiful Woman, in every way." Sounds like you like her, eh Russell ? As one of the Good Morning America hosts said to the fan in the audience who proposed to Joni on TV - "Get in line, pal" "And I'm sure if the Clintons were still in the White House, November 7th would be proclaimed a National Holiday!" Er - I think they had their chance - they needed 12 years to get that bill through Congress ? 8 wasn't enough ? "I interviewed her for the first time (and Leonard C. whom she was "going with" at the time) in her dressing room backstage at The Troubadour in June of 1968. And their songs on the dvd are both at the end of Side One, separated only by Kris Kristofferson singing "Me & Bobby McGee." Hmmm - that's the kind of clue I was looking for. So there is more than a fair chance they met. And maybe traded notes. I wonder when exactly Justin started playing in open G. Still haven't studied the DVD. Plus, I do not know which albums they released before Isle of Wight. Worth a look maybe. Anyone know exactly when Isle of Wight took place, and which Moodies albums preceded it ? Hmm, well I don't think anyone knows how Arnold will be as Governor and I think he will definitely have to prove himself because I think people in CA want problems fixed or dealt with. He has been reaching out to all parties in the State and is taking an inclusive bi-partisan approach with naming many diverse Democrats to his transition team and as advisors. I think a lot of people are sick of nasty politics impeding progress and solving problems at this point. The idea of everyone working together is a good start. As far as him being a "gropinator" who knows? His long and very good record of work and contributions to charity, the community and government is extensive and speaks for itself.
