Anyway we have daily email chats and I mentioned that Ms Mitchell was celebrating a certain birthday and her reply was..... "Will see if I can manage a Joni track tomorrow. No promises!!"..... but she will, as yesterday she played 'Yellow Taxi'.......and talked with a (1960's) Australian guitarist about Babyboomers, he saying that the babyboomers are stuck in a music limbo..which is good for Joni fans! Ash......STOP PRESS...The lady above has rung and said yes there is to be 'huge' Joni birthday bash!!....its to be done by the morning crew...at......5.30am!!!!..they will play 3 songs and a bit of a bio...I am informed! oh a for am alarm clock!!! Very sad news as these things always are. And of course, there is a little Joni content as Bobby was half of The Righteous Brothers who had the world's most-played hit with "Unchained Melody" that Joni copped for her classic "Chinese Cafe". Of course, ironically, they also had a big hit with "Rock & Roll Heaven" where they listed of those performers who had passed from this life to the next. Those of us who have been here awhile take it for granted...we shouldn't. In a world of borderlines, we need to remember to embrace & celebrate those things that draw us together, as Joni does. I could just as easily tell the story of how you ilegally parked your car and waited in a LONG line at Borders in Chicago to get an XTC CD with Andy's autograph for me...and we had never even MET! I guess that most of the time we (particularly as Joni fans) feel somewhat disconnected in this world, and when that connectivity strikes - WHAM - it's pretty damn overwhelming. Joni Mitchell's "The Tea Leaf Prophecy" ? CW: Yeah, what a tune. GS: ? and Jane Siberry's "Bound By The Beauty." The magic that occurs on "The Tea Leaf Prophecy" is not only due to the fact that your voice so beautifully matches Joni's, but with Holly picking up the "Study war no more/Lay down your arms" repetition throughout, the song is taken to a new level. CW: I picked both of those tunes. I was listening to a lot of music to bring to the table. I wasn't sure how we were going to do them, but Holly agreed that I should carry the narrative on that one ("The Tea Leaf Prophecy") and that she should carry the narrative on "Bound By The Beauty." I think they are both songs that may have missed the attention of some people. They carry their own weight with them and their own beauty. "Tea Leaf Prophecy" certainly speaks to the endless hope to lay down the arms and absolutely study war no more and have real peace. There's something about it that says this always happens during war and in the background there is this plea to not study war no more and to lay it down, lay it down. It never quite happens, but it speaks to the constant dream of peace. "Bound By The Beauty" is what artists are. It's why we do what we do. All artists?painters, dancers?anybody who does their work in an artful way. Whether they are writers or maids in a motel. If you do it in an artful way, you are making more beauty in the world. That's what I think we should all be doing in some way. Not making less. And I don't think war makes beauty in any way. But peace does. I never have been able to buy the anomaly. That we make war to have peace. Any of the things that this particular administration is touting?it is the exact opposite thing. In order to have safety in our land, we spy on each other. It's the fox in the henhouse kind of philosophy and I just don't buy it. For us, to live in truth is how you live in peace. You are able to say you make mistakes, you are able to say if you really want to free the people of Iraq, or if there are hidden agendas there. A lot of us think there are and they're just not being talked about. Yet, they seem to be glaring. I think it is the job of artists to be bound by beauty and to speak the truth everywhere you can, which is sometimes risky business, especially these days. Hello to all of you -- had a dream about JoniFest the other night. Amazing that after 13 years here in San Francisco, I *rarely* have dreams set here, but after two fests (what -- eight days, total?) at the Full Moon, I now have dreams set there. Sigh. Speaking of the fest -- a couple of people at the fest asked if I would send them copies of Joni Noodles, the, um, dada-esque and extremely badly (on my part) prepared and feverishly performed (ditto) series of vignettes that Susan Guzzi and I performed on Friday night at the fest. I had intended to add some performance notes, etc. (e.g. -- poor Susan's panicked eyes as I blithely skipped lines here and there -- Susan, i know I've said it before, but if you're reading this, *please* forgive me -- it was the fever...). Then I got back still sick, got better but again lost the practical use of my hands, and...yadayadayada. I'm doing better lately, and I'd like to keep any promises made. Anyone who'd like the full script with performance notes, please e-mail me off-list. I'm back on the piano, too, and working on the stuff I'd *originally* intended to perform at the fest (of a more musical nature). I also had another idea -- two actually, but I'll keep one to myself for now - -- for performing Joni's music chorally (I know from hearing some of Bob Muller's cover CDs that it's been done before here and there -- like the Yale Men's Chorus singing I Don't Know Where I Stand, I think -- yes, Bob?). Would anyone be interested in exploring doing some songs... oh, I'll have to just come out and say it -- Would anyone be interested in becoming part of the Morbid Little Christmas Chorus? I worked out a piano-and-voice arrangement of Gift of the Magi a year or so ago, and I'd be willing to work out four-voice arrangements of that and the other three (River, the "Christmas is sparkling" verse of Chinese Cafe, Facelift) if I got some nibbles among likely fest-goers. Nibbles from people who can read music or would like to contribute instrumentally are especially welcome, but all nibbles are welcome, so to speak. Reminder for nibblers, and noodle seekers, and jmdlers in general -- I've changed my screen name for just my jmdl friends to "JustALittleBreen@aol.com". The program has a nice mix of serious local, national and international political commentary, quirky (Sydney-based) stories, the usual traffic and weather reports all interspersed with a little bit of music. The program is presented by Angela Catterns, and she has a segment every morning called "Voice From the Vault". Here, she plays a small excerpt from a radio interview with an unidentified famous person, and listeners phone in to guess the owner of the voice. This morning's segment was a no-brainer, with the first caller correctly identifying Joni's distinctive, unmistakable voice. It turns out that Angela Catterns is a huge fan of Joni's, and the winner of this morning's segment is also a fan (which is quite serendipitous!). Angela Catterns went on to play "Come in From the Cold". Given the time differences, could Sydney be among the first to celebrate Joni's 60th??? Happy birthday Joni! I really love their "core 7" albums, but I'm not as fond of some of their later stuff. Actually I hate some of their '80's music. I've seen them several times, but I'm sitting out the current tour. Their early albums were so psychedelic. Magical to listen to, when in that frame of mind!
