The video right now is REFUGE OF THE ROADS. In the chronology, I think it was the first video after the amazing keeper SHADOWS AND LIGHT. This one starts out with a bit of a shock. As was the latest style, there's an enormous tangled mass of electric guitar which drops to nothing and Joni goes: "He came / She smiled." What did Charles Mingus say? This broad has balls? Anyway, at the end she goes, "Wild thing/I thought you loved me." Maybe I had recognized this before and in my post-40 brain it seems new. She's quoting the Troggs, (and later by Jimi Hendrix of Seattle, Washington). "Wild thing I think you move me but I wanna know for sure. C'mon an'... hold me tight. ... You move me." Only Joni could put a visceral and vulgar track like that on the same collection as the ethereal and mytical "Sweet Bird". Everyone here knows it but it helps to reaffirm for me: The broad is one nervy broad. In the late 60s a lot of blues bands were getting open G open D tunings from the old blues masters. Although I would love to think that Jimmy Page was influenced by Joni alone, clearly he was more influenced by the blues greats who used these tunings a lot. Don't ask me to name names, I'm not an expert on blues history. Also, I know that there was a progressive movement in England that centered around the celtic sounds of Nick Drake and Fairport Convention (richard thompson) that also used alternate tunings. I'm barking out the back of my subconscious so if anyone wants to correct any of my musings, please feel free. To answer Catherine McKay's question, yes, there are Southern Lights. They're called the Aurora Australis. I've seen the Aurora Borealis twice: once very faintly in central Maine in the summer of 1992 or 1993 -- they were ghostly white and looked like glowing curtains. The second time was from an airplane flying over Greenland at night in the spring of 1998 -- and this was one of the most spectacular experiences of my life. We were almost IN the lights, and they were this amazing iridescent greenish-blue, undulating both vertically and horizontally, like a magical curtain. It was breathtaking. After I arrived in Stockholm, I saw a silver ring with a piece of labradorite, which had the exact same color combination and iridescence as the Northern Lights, so of course I had to buy it. I wear it both to enjoy the beauty of the stone, and to remind myself of that spectacular display. peace, Kay np: "Jitterboogie", Michael Hedges Kay Ashley Desktop Publisher Willis of New York, Inc. 7 Hanover Square New York, NY 10004-2594 tel: 212-837-0682 fax: 212-509-6487 kay.ashley@willis.com _____________________________________________________________ The information in this email and in any attachments is confidential and may be privileged. As part of my old-ladyness, I think I can safely say that I really don't like the big-venue concert idea at all. The seats we had weren't bad - they were directly facing the middle of the stage - but we were far back (not nearly as far back as most other people, but this is a frickin' hockey arena, people!) When the best way to see the performer is by checking the jumbo-tron, there is something wrong. However, the sound was good. Ultimately, my preference would be for a smaller concert hall, OK? His opening act was a young fella, who might have been Irish, but then again, could have been from the southern US, it was that hard to judge, whose name was (sounded like) Titer or Tighter or some durn thing or another (don't people have two names anymore?) who was very good but who was pretty overwhelmed, IMO, in such a large venue and who would have come across much better in a smaller hall. Not that he didn't do a fine job, but he was solo singer with a guitar, the type who kind of hunches over the guitar, so he would likely have fared much better in a more intimate setting. That's it from this old geezer. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 2003 23:48:01 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: alternate tunings - Moody Blues NJC --- Bob.Muller@Fluor.com wrote: > Bob, here are some similarities between Joni & The > Moody Blues: Muller, you are too much! But I need to de-lurk to tell you about this coming Friday, Nov. 7th... of course you all know it is Miss Mitchell's 60th birthday ( very hard to believe, isn't it? ). Anyway, thought I would draw your attention to the very fine radio station WFUV out of Fordham University in the Bronx, New York City. WFUV will be celebrating Joni's birthday all day long... meaning they will be playing lots of Joni... and talking lots of Joni. They do webstream... so those of you from out-of-range can listen too. ( www.wfuv.org ). Those near NYC, wfuv is 90.7 on your FM dial. I cannot guarantee... but I gave some info about the late great Wally Breese to the afternoon dj , Dennis Elsis, and Dennis told me that he would try and say something about Wally ( the founder of jonimitchell.com ) and Joni and how Wally helped put Kilauren ( Joni's daughter ) back in touch with Joni and all that stuff that I presume most of you already know about. I knew Wally... from e-mail and phone calls... but I really have fallen a bit out of touch with all of you here... so I hope this is all OK... I mean Wally was my friend too... at least a little... and he deserves a mention on the radio now and then... don't ya think? Anyway... hope this is all OK.. a bit presumptuous of me perhaps... but only a bit. Dennis Elsis is on the air between 2pm and 6pm, NYC time. WFUV is in the middle of fundraising... so all things Joni will happen inbetween begging for money... but that's the way things are in the world of public radio. Some of you might feel like sending them some money... who knows. I do not know what time the mention of Wally Breese might happen... sometime between 2pm and 6pm... sorry they cannot be more specific. I will try and catch whatever might happen on tape... and then... well... and then I don't know. Maybe there's a way to make it available so you all could hear it. At 8pm, the lovely and talented Rita Houston does a show called "The Whole Wide World"... and there's a chance Rita might play some Joni or mention Joni or something. Rita loves Joni almost as much as I do... and... just as a piece of trivia... I happen to know that Rita Houston once upon a time gave Miss Joni Mitchell a copy of one of the Cesoria Evora CDs. I'm guessing Joni loved it since everybody else does... OK... I hope this posts. Been a while, not sure I'm doing it right. HAPPY JONI'S 60TH BIRTHDAY EVERYBODY!!!!! See ya... bob paterson ( bobdog25nj@aol.com) and hello to the other Wally, and John...and everybody who keeps this list and jonimitchell.com running... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Nov 2003 04:00:47 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: RE: Joni's 60th on the radio, Friday, Nov. 7th, WFUV, NYC njc bob, what a great idea!!!!! as to our mention of the other wally, i assume you meant me. i don't anything to keep this thing going. i only give listers jolts and i shriek quite frequently. that's all. but you were sweet and you must one hell of a joni fan to have done this. love, wally ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Nov 2003 02:01:25 -0500 From: ljirvin@jmdl.com Subject: Today in History: November 6 1965: Joni performs at The Chess Mate in Detroit. - ---- For a comprehensive reference to Joni's appearances, consult Joni Mitchell ~ A Chronology of Appearances: http://www.jonimitchell.com/appearances.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Nov 2003 02:01:25 -0500 From: ljirvin@jmdl.com Subject: Today's Library Links: November 6 On November 6 the following article was published: 1998: "Mitchell influences folk, rock" - Penn State Digital Collegian (Biography) http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=637 ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2003 #550 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
