Oh Wally, well said!!!! We should all think our lucky stars for this project Bob has taken on. Even though Bob mentions my bowling a perfect game, it certainly is a MUCH MUCH harder task to compile 300 covers of BSN plus all the other Joni covers. The quality is VERY good. It starts out in black & white, some of the performers talking about folk music, or the guitar, or both. It's subtitled in Japanese. Joni has a fairly long monologue section, talking about starting out with the ukelele. Then there's the Dylan "Subterranean Homesick Blues" video (from Don't Look Back) where he flips the cards, then Joni has her live performance of "Little Green" (in color) which as I said is a nice performance and a couple of times looks as though she's going to cry. The live performance is interspersed with the cover of Blue, the lyrics to the song, some other photos. Then there's Dave van Ronk doing BSN - man is he awful, he sounds & looks like some wino derelict singing, but I suppose I shouldn't be so disrespectful as he's passed on. Then there's Joni again with Marcie, only the audio is dubbed. Instead of the actual performance audio the filmmakers dubbed in the studio recording. This also is blended with pics of & from STAS. Then it cuts to Tim Buckley then it cuts off. I would suggest that this go to Ashara so these tidbits can be compiled in the next video compilation. Again Lord, forgive us ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Nov 2003 00:03:33 -0400 From: Bruce Kimerer Subject: underrated Linda (NJC) There have been a few posts recently about Heart Like a Wheel -- no question a great album. I've been re-listening to a couple of Linda's late 90s solo records -- Feels Like Home & We Ran -- and I contend she's really just as good as ever. In her song selections and her performances. There are some beautiful choices on Feels Like Home, including the Randy Newman title track from Faust. (My one quibble: she changes Neil's lyric in After the Goldrush from 'felt like getting high' to "felt like I could cry.') Even Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues has grown on me, although I first thought it was totally out of character for her. Linda doesn't pander. And although her style, arrangements and musical choices have not changed much over the past the past 30 years -- she has not lost the ability to spot a good song and connect with a lyric. I only wish she would record and release records more often. Plus, when she collaborates with Emmy Lou (recently featured so frequently in the JMDL) they both really soar. The Western Wall is a must have. It seems sometimes that she is demoted as an artist because she is not a composer. This I think is unfair. On a different topic: TV music marketing Cyndi Lauper's new record At Last is getting heavy TV advertising. I read a very positive review in the NY Times of a club date where she performed much of this record's content of covers. Apparently not over-orchestrated, but fairly minimal. Sounds good to me. However, her choice of covering classics, I guess, makes this record a prime candidate for TV. As was/is R. Stewart's and B. Midler's. BTW, yes, I think Rod really lost his way. His first few albums were truly something different at the time. Rod Stewart & Gasoline Alley sounded very fresh and idiosyncratic. Every Picture Tells a Story, too (the title track of which is a huge amount of fun). After that, he seems to have a become simply a 'vocalist.' Believe it or not, my high school, in New Jersey, in 1970, arranged and booked a fund-raiser at a local movie theater that featured The Faces (with Rod of course) and Mountain (with Leslie West & Felix Pappalardi etal). Those were the days.
