I could not tell if my link required access. I have copied the review below. That said, I stand by my earlier remarks. And, there were similar problems in the Buddy / Julie Miller concert downstairs at Zankel hall. Perhaps it's partly the limitations of electric music, but in this case I feel there was much that could have been done better. "If you want to hear this band with a great mix, I recommend the SPYBOY cd or the RED DIRT GIRL cd." I have those. I prefer the mix on RDG, perhaps because it's a studio mix ? And I imagine there is quite a lot that can be done to clean up the sound of a live concert performance so that that the recorded version is an improvement on the "live" sound. Best, Bobsart Here's the review The Sound Between Heavenly and Earthy By STEPHEN HOLDEN Published: October 27, 2003 Jack Vartoogian for The New York Times Emmylou Harris showcased some of her songwriting on Saturday in a concert at Carnegie Hall. READERS' OPINIONS Forum: Join a Discussion on Music silver-haired cowgirl dressed in a simple black gown with a rhythm guitar strapped around her neck, Emmylou Harris was every inch the high priestess of country music on Saturday evening at Carnegie Hall, where she performed songs from her three-decade-long recording career to a sold-out house. Ms. Harris has always stood one step removed from the country music mainstream. Even when she's down home, she exudes the cool regality of an oracle contemplating the field from a pedestal that affords a long, sad-eyed view. Discerning chains of musical connection in which country shades into folk, bluegrass, rockabilly and pop, Ms. Harris is a classicist in the same mode as her friend and sometime collaborator Linda Ronstadt. But because Ms. Harris has remained more of a country traditionalist, her scope is narrower. Her ethereal, crystalline voice, which hovers on a seam between the celestial and the gritty, is closest to the high lonesome sound of bluegrass. And her austere delivery conveys contradictory currents of emotional distance and cosmic heartbreak, brokenness and resilience. In search of a deeper expressiveness, she has allowed the rougher, darker edges of her voice to show on her recent recordings, which undercut the Nashville studio gloss of her early work. Ms. Harris's concert focused on material from "Stumble Into Grace," her second album for Nonesuch, the eclectic label whose imprimatur certifies the few pop performers on its roster as members of an artistic elite. Its material continues her late-blooming adventures in songwriting with mostly original songs, including several collaborations with the French-Canadian duo Kate and Anna McGarrigle, who appeared onstage on Saturday as backup singers. As a songwriter, Ms. Harris aspires to a self-conscious timelessness. Her music is more hymnlike than pop, her lyrics tinged with biblical inflections that monumentalize their characters as figures in a heroic canvas of the Old West, where sorrow and death stalk the landscape. One of her better new songs, "Strong Hand," dedicated to June Carter Cash, celebrates the transcendent union of a couple from a hardscrabble background. The heroine of the grim "Lost Unto This World," a collaboration with Daniel Lanois, is an anonymous everywoman destroyed by war, famine, rape and torture. Saturday's concert, which followed a series of smaller-scale performances curated by Ms. Harris at Zankel Hall, should have been the icing on the cake of Ms. Harris's New York City visit. But it was seriously compromised by the kind of muddy sound that often undermines amplified music in Carnegie Hall. Although her voice had body and fiber, barely a word she sang was intelligible in the drum-heavy, reverberant din of a fine country band, whose mainstays included Buddy Miller on harmony vocals and electric guitar and her producer, Malcolm Burn, on an array of instruments. And the contributions of the McGarrigles were all but inaudible. Only in the scattered acoustic selections when the band departed the stage did the mud begin to recede and the full radiance and intelligence of Ms. Harris's singing reveal itself. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Nov 2003 09:10:34 EST From: Bobsart48@aol.com Subject: Re: Hidden Treasures John Rose wrote: "I'll be celebrating Joni's 60th(!) birthday(11-7-43) on this week's "Hidden Treasures" show. As one of the relatively few fans who likes Dancin' Clown, I would in this case advise you that the initial request to play this song was a gag, dedicated to one of Joni's best fans (and the world's ranking authority on covers of Joni's songs - perhaps you do on-line interviews ?) Anyway, Mr. Muller (pronounced Mule -er) has expressed vociferously his relative distaste for this song over the years - hence the gag. In that context, I would suggest that you replace Dancin Clown with a two song sequence from the For the Roses CD - Lesson in Survival / Let the Wind Carry Me (they segue into one another, so there is no interruption in the music). The Harmonic Concordance is not astrology mythology. I just hung up from a conference call* with renowned scientist/mystic, Nassim Haramein. This already forming Harmonic Concordance and the solar flares impacting Earth now are REAL signs at a physics level of the huge change we are in. This is how the scientist explains it briefly. The sun is changing and has been noticeably changing in the past three years (since the Grand Cross cycle of fall 1999.) The solar flares coming to earth from the sun are particles and plasma of sun energy being thrown off and filling our atmosphere. It is a HUGE burst of energy coming our way. He said as an analogy that the difference coming on us is very rapid which is like going from the lowest note on a piano to the highest. That is our vibrational change. These solar waves are full of ions and electrical energy that raises the vibration of everything around us. The sun is changing its composition--it is becoming what the ancient Mayans and Egyptians call the 6th Sun. He says there is NO GOING BACK. We are still getting the hits of change in waves, but soon it will be a constant. He says the weather change this hot summer was not the greenhouse effect. It is the Sun's effect. This change in the composition of the sun changes the Earth's energy field and all that lives here. We will be in a higher vibration and we will all be more sensitive, telepathic, better healers and experiencing bouts of exhaustion. It's important to rest and assimilate change, then get back to work when you feel impacted. Meditation is very helpful as it raises your vibration. The 6th sun phenomenon is NOT a metaphor. It is an actual change. Part of the proof is the presence of auroras seen in the sky. I see these as rainbow colors dancing on the clouds any time of the day when lucky enough to tune in. Block out the face of the sun so you can look near the sun's corona and see the color play. It will show even in the night sky during these intense solar flares. The part we play in this change is to ground this higher vibration into earth, to join together in groups for meditation, support, chanting (OM helps us collectively unite) and to keep your personal evolution at the forefront--positive, Aquarian consciousness of Love, helping others, changing our mentalities (from the old Piscean model). Your hara, heart chakra and crown are the points through which these changes cycle in and out of us to earth, atmosphere, solar system. He said that your thoughts are more and more powerful as creation forces. Your thoughts and words are shaping things to come. Nov. 8 is the the major crack in the worlds when the lunar eclipse of the moon occurs (5:13 pm here) while the two triangles are interlocking (the heart chakra mandala). Your one life can make a difference. We can all shape a Humanity that works for everyone compassionately. We are entering the final stages of purification and preparation for the global event known as Harmonic Concordance. This unique influx of Light will take place during the Lunar Eclipse on November 8/9, and will build in momentum and power until the Solar Eclipse on November 23, 2003. During that time period, a multidimensional portal of Light will be opened into the Divine Heart and Mind of God-the omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent Cosmic I AM-All That Is. Once this portal is open, our Father-Mother God will flood the Earth with the most intensified frequencies of Divine Consciousness Humanity can endure. The Divine Intent of this unprecedented experiment is to catapult Humanity into a higher state of Divine Consciousness and to accelerate the Ascension of ALL Life on Earth into the 5th Dimension. Every facet of life in the whole of Creation is aware of this Cosmic Moment on Planet Earth, and we are receiving more assistance from On High than ever before in the history of time. The God Victorious accomplishment of this experiment will result in the creation of a whole new octave of Godhood. This will expand the borders of Divinity for ALL Life into previously unknown expressions of limitless perfection. Since the Lunar and Solar Eclipses in May, the Elemental Kingdom has been purging the planet of the miscreated thought and feeling patterns Humanity has manifested over the Ages. As a result of this intense purification, we have witnessed unprecedented wildfires, hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, floods, heat waves, and now Solar Flares. Through the gift of God's Divine Grace, this incredible cleansing process has involved relatively little loss of life. Any loss of life is tragic, but in the original predictions made aeons ago, it was thought that there would be massive loss of life during this purging process. Due to this cleansing, every person on the planet is now vibrating at a higher frequency of vibration. The higher the vibration of the atomic and subatomic particles that make up the cells and organs of our bodies, the more Light we will be able to assimilate, and the more effective our shift into Divine Consciousness will be. The Solar Logos from our physical Sun and the Solar Logos from the Suns beyond Suns beyond Suns that support this Solar System are well aware of this Divine Truth. That is precisely why they are intervening in unfathomable ways at this time. Our Father-Mother God is breathing Solar Light from the Core of Creation through the multidimensional spectrums of Light into the Heart Flames of the Solar Logos from our Great, Great Central Sun. These Beings of Light, in turn, are breathing the Solar Light into the Heart Flames of the Solar Logos from our Great Central Sun, who are breathing the Solar Light into the Heart Flames of the Solar Logos from our Central Sun, who are breathing the Solar Light into the Heart Flames of the Solar Logos from our physical Sun. The Solar Logos from our physical Sun are, in turn, breathing that Solar Light into the atmosphere of Earth through massive Solar Flares. On October 28th, the third largest Solar Flare ever recorded erupted on the Sun. It was classified as an X17.2 flare and persisted for more than an hour. It released an ejection of more than a billion tons of gas from the Sun's corona. Both the Solar Flare and the coronal mass ejection accelerated charged particles to even higher frequencies and hurled them at near the speed of Light directly toward the Earth. It takes Light about 8 minutes to travel from the Sun to the Earth. These particles reached the Earth in less than an hour. The coronal mass reached the Earth several hours later. This mammoth Solar Flare projected forth an electrified cloud of geomagnetic particles 13 times the size of Earth, which blasted this planet with supercharged Solar Light. As these highly-charged particles from the Sun were hurled through the atmosphere of Earth, they penetrated into the core of purity in every electron of precious life energy evolving here. The frequency of vibration of every facet of life on Earth was accelerated the maximum that Cosmic Law would allow. This accelerated Solar Light which originated in the Core of Creation-the very Heart of God-is the pulse beat of the Universe. It is the Life-force of all existence and the cohesive power of Divine Love. It is the quickening force within the soul of Humanity; it is boundless, unceasing and everlasting energy. For the very first time, the full power of Solar Light from the Heart of God has penetrated into the Core of the Earth and exploded as a mighty Starburst through the mental stratum of the planet. The majestic power of this Solar Light has burst asunder the almost impenetrable veil that has prevented Humanity from perceiving our own Divinity. This miraculous act of Divine Intervention has cleared the way for Humanity's Ascension into Higher Consciousness. Just for a moment, feel the rejoicing pouring forth from the Beings of Light in the Celestial Realms. In deep humility, please send forth the full momentum of your heartfelt gratitude and love to our Father-Mother God and the Solar Logos for their selfless service to ALL Life on this sweet Earth. Just stumbled across a site that claims BSN has been played over 4 million times on the radio http://www.classicbands.com/mostplayed.html I wasn't surprised to see which song has had the most number of plays (over 8 million, according to this list), but was very surprised to see that Gladys Knight's version of 'Heard it Through the Grapevine', which I can't even remember ever hearing, has had over 6 million, whilst Marvin doesn't even feature (?) Coincidentally, I spotted The Youngbloods version of "Get Together" down at the 3 million mark. I've always loved the live version of this from their 'Ride the Wind' album, which also includes Fred Neil's song 'The Dolphin' - love it - especially Banana's electic piano! There might be other recordings. Thanks for the further history! I was recalling last night that "Get Together" was sung by the Allan Ward Trio on the 1965 "Sing Out" video that was discussed here back in Sept. and wondering how they knew it so far back! Didn't know that We Five recorded it, too. I loved that group. I was reading a tribute to Chet/Dino by his sister a few months ago and learned that his parents were Gypsies and he grew up with them moving around the carnival circuit. It discussed how the unstructured life style gave free rein to his creativity. He lived a unique life and left us too soon. Just recently Laurent helped me get an "Urge For Going" that was available on a website payable in French francs...so the list goes on around the world. And above all...ABOVE ALL...I raise my Joni covers goblet to the uber-webmaster Les, who not only has also sent recordings but more importantly provided the webspace to easily sort and catalogue all this information.
