It really is a shock at 1st to listen to (yes I know I am 20 odd years late!!!)......but with head phones on..... it grows on to one..there are so many clever bits......it did seem disjointed at the first listening....but actually its pretty clever as it forces you to stop and think what is going on!! It seems to have a sudden end.....and I thought..."is there not more?"........that I was made to put it back on! I am sure Lord of the Rings the complete video/DVD will have this effect......"oh its the End?.....I had better watch it again!" I think most Airplane fans like Joni too. 2400 often veers into heavy political discussion and is very often "off topic," which doesn't bother me. Like this list, lots of people have been there for years. 2400 and JMDL are the only two lists I subscribe to. Both have lots of posts and as a result I usually get a million e-mails a day. Between the two lists this morning my eyes are crossing because you're both talking about Papa John's violins being "screechy," which is an odd coincidence! Have never been to NY or a show so really can't comment on her performances as Mama Rose. True, Rosalind Russell didn't have a show stopping voice but I found it most certainly good enough and very unique. What touched me about her was the performance itself and I must admit that I cannot possibly think of a finer scene or performance than the one at the train station. If that wasn't an Oscar deserving effort, I don't know what was or is. They don't make em like that anymore. Bette Midler? Love her but couldn't really find a place for her in that part after Russell though looking forward to grabbing her Clooney effort. Could see Daly in the part and I imagine she is quite grand at it. If these two greats underwent a musical apotheosis, they would be, if lucky, Joni Mitchell. Keith, it took me over 30 years to build toward such a bold view of Joni's work, despite my unmasked adoration of it during that period. That it keeps becoming more wondrous to me with every listen convinces me that you and I are not mad - although I doubt that those other two were very good singers or lyricists. (I imagine they could play an instrument or two, and composing for an entire orchestra must have been rather time consuming, I imagine ;-) ) I love it when the occasional critic comes out and says something close to that, too. This year's Wall to Wall Joni tribute afforded Symphony Space the opportunity to make a similar statement, by honoring her in a way that included some of the great classical and jazz composers. What I wanted to convey is that Joni is first in her order just as Mahler and Beethoven are first in their order--equally enjoyable when they need to be. Someone said to Paul Simon once, "Your music is poetry." His response went something like, "No, I am a songwriter. If you want poetry, read Wallace Stevens." As fine and enobling a self-understanding as a person could/should want. Yesterday, on my forty-mile drive home from work, I put in Joni's first album. Today, reading the list, I saw a reference to one of my top four or five songs by JM: "Marcie" (from the first album). Could there be a more haunting, lovely expression of sorrow? (well, maybe the Adagietto from Mahler's 5th Symphony : >) --the "imp of the perverse"! Let's face it, though, the only thing better than a JM song is another JM song. "Oh, brave new world that hath such people in it." You make feel like dancing, even though my feet are "covered with keloids from the slings and arrows of outrageous romance." Love to y'all--from Bowling Green, Kentucky. Keith ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Oct 2003 09:57:19 EST From: MINGSDANCE@aol.com Subject: RE; saskatoon in oct. I use the sage for smudging and consider that it is from Joni's homeland and that the Wanuskewin had 9,000 years of tribal history that the sage would be good medicine. Sounds like her to me. It couldn't have been Marni Nixon. Marni's a soprano. Think 'My Fair Lady', 'West Side Story' and 'The King and I'. She dubbed the lead soprano roles in all of those. (Eliza Doolittle, Maria and Anna Leonowens respectively.) Mama Rose is definitely not Marni's range. When I was in the Seattle Men's chorus many moons ago, we did a Christmas concert with Marni Nixon. We did 'The Twelve Days of Christmas' as kind of a vocal duel between Marni and the chorus. She hit a high note toward the end of the song that drowned out the entire chorus of probably about a hundred men. Very lovely, clear soprano voice. But no Julie Andrews, in my opinion. Still think Bette made Mama Rose her own. But that's just my *opinion*. I don't pretend to say that it's an absolute undisputed fact.
