[ash Subject: re crosby interview... SJC Kakki, I think your post, a tiny snippet of it below, rang very true. It is funny how in life we can know the same people but have different experiences of that same person. I have a completely materialistic friend who is only concerned with her next car, her latest decor and the new and the most costly... But I find in her a real core of absolute "I am in a fix can you help me" rock solidness at the darkest times. Other people who have never bothered to talk to her hate her and think she is a waste of space. But things happened to my friend when she was little, she is also hyperactive, that have never been fixed with psycho babble and extensive counselling and she makes of her life a fist that is about as good as it can be. She is a valuable human being despite her faults and her influence on me has been to make me look behind the mask, the "faces we prepare for the faces we meet" (T S Elliot.. Prufrock) Joni has her temper (or maybe had her temper have there been any recent outbursts?) and she has her undoubted talent. WE on this list recognise something in her voice, her words, her amazing skill with a guitar, the path she wove through the sixties that keeps her fixed in the hearts and minds of people like us. MOre and more, I find her being enjoyed by kids of my children's age as they strive to find something that is meaningful amongst the dross. My son has discovered his enjoyement of playing guitar through listening to Joni ("just a few mum, her voice is a bit...well you know.... screechy..... but the lyrics and guitar are wonderful") and in the biographies he reads about other artists finds her being referred to as an influence. WE have, most of us, defined our Joni Moment, when we realised there was something special about someones singing that made us want to know more. AND HERE WE ARE and THANK WHOEVER FOR THAT.... Yes Joni may still grouch about stuff and be fed up and feel under appreciated, but is that not how many artists feel? No matter how much they have they are unsettled inside.. "caught in their struggles for higher achievement". Maybe Joni has not had the chance to realise that like many of us you really only find yourself when you live empty for a while.. I think she did find that space many years ago and those songs are in her early years when she was truly LIVING her life. The success of those albums distanced her from the struggle and, whilst allowing her to do her thing on a bit of a financial and critical cushion, she maybe lost touch with the real things that moved her. Her later work seems to me to be a bit off course... however wonderful much of it is, a good deal of it is somehow detatched observation. I do not get the feeling from (and I am battening down the hatches here) Hejira... that she was living some of it, but was trying to do so through observation. There are wonderful songs on that album but they do not strike me as he actually FEELING what she was writing about..... There is a precision to it that is both briliiant musically, but emotionally unconected no matter how much she writes about what is in her sphere at that time. I know that many of you came into Joni via HEjira and it remains your JONI MOMENT.. but for me (coming to it much later after a gap) it does not do it for me emotionally. I am writing totally off the cuff here, I have yet to read a joni biog... and I hope that my observations will be taken as those. Perhaps she is so much a woman of heart and mind that she is revered for her music over and above the person that she is... Perhaps that pisses her off/pissed her off.... And Maybe Mr Crosby has a whole load of axes to grind for reasons he is never going to explain.... Anyway, thank you Kakki for prompting me to de lurk and to write for once about my feelings about Joni... I usually wade in on any other topic... but hey its a crisp morning, I am off to work in a moment and saw I had time, for once to read my digest... How are you all?........ I miss you and I want fest all over again NOW...... It's a disc that don't play in my DVD player (mine's a very cheap one, indeed). But I can enjoy it through Windows Media Player. As you could guess, I'm very glad for getting this, so... If you like, I'll offer this as a Vine: this means: you make your own copy, and pass the "original" (at least the one(s) I'm going to send) to the next person on list. Right? I'm willing to send two copies on this Wonderful list: one copy for European people, and another to America. So, send me your snail-mail address and your promise to Reoffer it on list, and... maybe you'll be the next one to enjoy this. techny details: Originally broadcast BBC September 1970,re broadcast September 12th.2003 BBC 4. 7 tracks 30 minutes digital TV > Radeon capture card > VCD Have a Wonderful time! I read it in an interview in the JMDL article data base that Joni herself has said that it was traumatic times that brought out the poet in her. It was something she had to do. Here's a snippet from it http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=503 Joni Mitchell could hardly be described as a "coward." Indeed, looking back on Blue she once said it was probably the purest emotional record she'd ever make. "In order to survive in the world, you've got to have defenses and mine just went," she explained. "Actually, it was a great spiritual opportunity but nobody around me knew what was happening. All I knew is that everything became kind of transparent. I could see through myself so clearly. And I saw others so clearly that I couldn't be around people. I heard every bit of artifice in a voice. Maybe it was brought on by nervous exhaustion. Whatever brought it on, it was a different un-drug-induced consciousness. In order to make that album we had to lock the doors in the studio. Only (engineer) Henry Lewy and I were in there. When the guy from the union came to the studio to take his dues I couldn't look at him. I'd burst into tears. I was so thin-skinned. Just all nerve endings. As a result there was no capacity to fake. I'll never be that way again. And I'll never make an album like that again." Looking back on that quote now, Joni Mitchell finally reveals why she was so fragile at the time. "All those songs I wrote the way I did because I had to," she explains. "I was emotionally disturbed, again, which brings out the poet in me. I had some hard life changes handed to me. The story is out on the streets now, but what happened was that I had to give up my daughter for adoption. Because of poverty. Not having the money to feed and clothe her and put a roof over her head." Perhaps we've all had some hard life changes handed to us and that's what brought us to Joni. I know I have. I wonder if we could talk about them here. As for myself, just at about the time I was introduced to the music of Mitchell, my high school sweetheart had broken up with me. I was an emotional mess! I was truly heartbroken at the time. It was those sad romantic melodies that I found so compelling. How are you Lucy? I can't even listen to his music now without thinking what a master PRICK he is. For all his false lyrics of peace and love why was the SOB arrested for carrying a gun, It just sums up the man. His son was a jewel though and talked with us for a while, but then he was not raised by his father. Remember Crosby spent time in jail so he has a lot of unresolved hostility towards the general public and ex-cons tend to stretch truths to make them feel better about their own shortcomings as a person. He is incredibly flawed in my opinion. On the other hand Joni owed me nothing the day I met her, but through out the day she approached me three times to continue our talks, It was like we had been close for years. She was true to her self not living a persona like that asshole Crosby. I believe Joni gave him one of his first breaks out of prison by putting words to Yvette for him. It just shows who bites the hand that feeds him! I'm coming late to this conversation, but if only the black keys are used, it might be Eb minor (same as Gb major). Please excuse if this is a dumb butt-in. DAVID LAHM (Now isn't that a genteel - and nice - way to handle that kind of correction, when you know you're right ?) Anyway, I realized that the inferior arrangement I had from the LOTC songbook was not the only one I owned, since I also have the HITS songbook, which appears to have a good arrangement of the inital LOTC version. It is written in E minor, so you would have to transpose it down a half-key in order to play it 'just like Joni', but just from looking at it (I don't want to wake my wife right now), it looks pretty much right on. (In looking at the intro, I see that there are a couple of notes in the intro (and the outro, I suppose) which - if transposed down - cause you to hit white notes - in this case, A, the second note of the song, and C a few measures later. But I believe that there are none in the body of the song, and only those two grace notes in the intro and outro). Kate, if you'd like a copy of this, let me know off list. Performances begin Oct. 31 at Danny's Skylight Room in Manhattan's midtown theatre district. Kreston and Lahm were owners of the recently closed Judy's in Chelsea, a respected cabaret on Eighth Avenue. Directed by Richard Hendrickson, the new evening was developed from four acclaimed shows that the duo presented at Judy's. Musical numbers range from "Good Ole, Bad Old Days" by Anthony Newley to "I'm All I've Got" by Felicia Sanders to "Baby Dream Your Dream" by Dorothy Fields to Lahm's own "Never Too Little." Lahm, whose mother was the great Broadway and Hollywood lyricist and book writer Dorothy Fields, is widely recognized as the official keeper of the Fields musical canon. As a lyricist, the late Fields is represented on Broadway this season with Never Gonna Dance, a stage version of the musical film, "Swing Time." At Goodspeed Opera House, her songs are being heard in a revised revival of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn , in East Haddam, CT. A Broadway revival of Sweet Charity is also in the works. Playing with Lahm and Kreston are Tim Ferguson on bass and Bobby Shankin on drums. Anthony, Felicia, Dorothy, David and Me plays Fridays Oct. 31-Nov. 14 at 7 PM and Saturdays Nov. 22 & 29 at 9:30 PM. Danny's Skylight Room is at 346 W. 46th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. There is a cover charge of $20 with a $10 minimum. Michael Paz has found a less expensive way to get the DVD's duplicated, so.....now, the DVD's for Jonifest 2003 are the same price as the videos. What this means is everyone's previous order is potentially wrong, and I am confused to no end over here in MA. If you have already sent in an order for Jonifest Videos or DVD's, you need to do one of two things. 1) e-mail me at this address and tell me you'd like to keep the previous order exactly as is. (This is pretty much for those people that ordered videos and would like to keep that same order, as the price has not changed.) 2) If your order is to be changed in **ANY** way (DVD's instead of videos, overage of money paid, etc.) Please go to: http://www.jmdl.com/jonifest/store.cfm and send in a new order. You will need to fill out a completely new order, and check off whether it's a new or an updated order. You will also be asked to check from several options what you would like done with any overage you may have paid for DVD's. If you have not yet sent in an order for DVD's or videos, this is the time to do it. I'd like to get these DVD's and videos into everyone's hands as soon as possible. So, the deadline for all orders will be November 3rd. This should give everyone ample time to figure out what they want to do, and get me the info. Of course, the quicker the new orders are placed, the longer I have to make sense of everything, which would be very helpful. :-) NOTE: The DVD's are Region -free, and will be able to be played on ANY system, regardless of where you live. Filled with one-take panoramas of Lakota tribesmen re-creating the controversial Ghost Dance -- a practice that brought the full force of the United States Army down on South Dakota's Native Americans, and led to the massacre at Wounded Knee -- "Miyelo" is also a current installment at L.A.'s Stephen Cohen Gallery, through Nov. 8. It offers a significant amount of commentary and context on what remains a relatively obscure and tragic chapter in American history. <<< i thought those interested in the "lakota" (joni) thread and those into the LOTR movies might appreciate the above. as for me, i appreciate VIGGO! -- emily, in chicago The New Yahoo! I hope I manage to spell my thoughts even with my bad English. I don't find Joni beeing ungrateful when she criticizes drawbacks of the music business and the way she is beeing treated in it. (Personally I think getting hurt for such distinctions like "the best female sing&songwriter.." among all different drawbacks is justifiable). I think there are lots of reasons for women to become bitter in this world. Only thing that holds the feeling to ravel out is selfishness: we all know bitter mind just poisons it's carrier's life. I believe Joni is very aware of that. But she is also very eager for life and she has always had the certain sparkle. She wants a good life in sequel as well. Men are much easier allowed to be arrogant, but women mostly become punished and are returned to their places and roles pretty fast, if they rise with too strong opinions. I think this is something Joni just can't swallow without coughing. She has used to express her thoughts, and she's a person of enthusiasm. She also knows too well that she's a brilliant artist. There are lots of women who find this subject too painful to discuss about it. It's also true that it is easy to subdue such opinions 'couse it smells too feministic (and that word has suffered a bad inflation). Still the problem doesn't disappear. I find Joni very brave in beeing open with her opinions. Who else would have courage to open the line singing "Let me speak, let me spit out my bitterness." In it's concentrated message it's killing me every time I hear it. How could she write such a strong song without having ever felt bitterness that incising? She definetely has her reasons, but she's also enjoying her every-day champagne, paintings and beautiful relationships. And she's still enjoying of life. G'n H "Croz interview re: Joni DC: Well, she knows just how I feel, so it's no secret. She carries around so much anger and bitterness, and stuff, baggage that is so unnecessary, and she shows so little gratitude for being given the gift that she's been given. She treats it like it was her just desserts or something, you know, and it's ball I can say is if that had been me, I would have been very, very grateful and tried to be nice to everybody. And, she's very angry and bitter and feelsunderappreciated, and she'll tell you about it for hours. And, I think that's graceless of her, you know. I wrote it all down in a song which I can't print.(laughter) I wrote a really good song about Joni, which I can't print anywhere." _________________________________________________________________ Tilaa nyt Hotmail postit kdnnykkddsi! http://www.msn.fi/mobiili/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Oct 2003 17:44:57 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Crosby Interview with Joni Content NJC "I hope I manage to spell my thoughts even with my bad English." - ---------------------------------------------- I thought you did a wonderful job with the English, I understood you very clearly. From Tasmania. Well last night watched Joni on Australian TV......(and no ad breaks!!!!) brilliant.. I sat there for a whole hour spell bound (er did I say I have that fidget disease..in which I can't sit for more than 30 seconds??) well it was wonderful and so many amazing photos and the music spoke so loud and clear...or is that clean? I know most of you would have seen it? but it was beautiful! I looked up at the wall clock and thought well this has been going an hour and we are only up to 1973 in Joni's life...how are they going to put 30 years into 20 odd mins left? So they didn't!!! They seemed to skip thru lots......okay there is at least 2 hours more they could have put in?? and near the end of this show...was the kicker!! Nash and Crosby etc were saying her life was now COMPLETE and OVER???? ....!!!! and now she had gone into retirement.!..with the bit of Joni saying .......am I not relevant anymore???. This left me feeling quite sad at this view...I have seen Springsteen, Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton interviews and they are sooooo positive and all the old Jazz and Blues players..they intimate that even if they are old..they still have plenty to give...as was seen with Mingus..even up to the end....quite weird! So this is the next morning.....I can't seem to shake that annoying feeling from the film. I have now looked at Joni's 'Hits'.....and can see only one song of Joni's from the 1990's and one from the 1980's..the rest are 1960's and 1970's! so are the 1980/90's stuff on Miss's? But overall I felt the film gave me a very good impression of Joni Mitchell and I felt more of an understanding of her as an artist....and as a human being. I loved the bit near the end.....Joni has always needed love! Graham Nash seemed to make out that Joni was mad..ie her going into a trance for hours....being there but not being there .....( I do that all the time at work!).....maybe that was my interpretation of what he said, he seemed like a jaded/spurned lover! I did think that by joining this site, I would learn things about her that I did not wish to know..but up to now...its all been good!! Its funny how politically correct we have become? most of the time in the film....Joni seemed to have the cancer sticks (cigarettes) in her hand...tsk tsk. Maybe Jewel was being groomed as the new Joni? But what was funny was seeing Pat Metheny! One of my favourite Lps is 'As falls Wichita, so falls Wichita Fall'......I equate this with the group of records under the title of Windham Hill...what ever happened to WH???? But what did strike me from the film...was this nagging thought of why Joni's voice was so familiar? Then it struck me! Renaissance and Annie Haslam !! She had that similar voice and range. They came out of the period of Jethro Tull, Lindisfarne, Fairport Convention.....Electric Folk (British).. I saw Renaissance quite a few times and actually met Annie..yes I was the all gushing. fan..I asked her why that idiot Roy Wood (Wizzard and Ex ELO) was on her solo album? She just smiled and said......Coz I live with him...... oooooooh shot down Renaissance, made some terrific music...which sounds now a bit dated, (some of it even now gets the toes tapping and is that not what its all about?) they consisted of John Tout, Jon Camp,Terrence Sullivan and Michael Dunford.
