Joni was referring to London Bridge, not Eastern Rain, when she called a song "pure nonsense." It's a little hard to tell from the transcript, but on tape it's clear. The confusion stems from the fact that she and Gene were kind of talking over each other. JM: "London Bridge." God, that's years ago that I did that. GS: Yeah, a lot of people called and said, yeah, what about the old songs? How come -- JM: Well, they're like old paintings. It's like if you're an art student, you have a portfolio full of paintings and you look back over it and you say, "my God, when did I do that? How did I do that?" And you can't identify with it after a while. Some songs -- some songs that are -- I'm afraid are lost until I reidentify with them. GS: Isn't it a shame that a lot of contemporary singer-songwriters, they write -- say you write 20 songs, just to use any number and they record their first album and they leave off some of the songs that everybody liked, and then they sort of move on to new things and feel the same way about their old songs, but people still, you know, never heard -- for instance, you're going to record a second album, and you're not sure at this point I don't think if you're going to record "From Both Sides, Now" which you haven't recorded. JM: Oh, I think I'll record that. GS: But you may never record "London Bridge" or -- JM: I don't even remember how I did that. That was really strange the way I used to do that. GS: Or "Eastern Rain." JM: I wrote -- that was just after I got back from London. It was pure nonsense and I can't remember anything about it now. Hi Maggie. Today is indeed a sad day. Baseball is such a strange game. I am powerless as well and yes, I think now is a good time to shift my attention over to music. This morning on Atlanta talk radio, host Neal Boortz was saying as far as he was concerned, the baseball season was now over. Bob Dylan's Statement on Johnny Cash I was asked to give a statement on Johnny's passing and thought about writing a piece instead called "Cash Is King," because that is the way I really feel. In plain terms, Johnny was and is the North Star; you could guide your ship by him -- the greatest of the greats then and now. I first met him in '62 or '63 and saw him a lot in those years. Not so much recently, but in some kind of way he was with me more than people I see every day. There wasn't much music media in the early Sixties, and Sing Out! was the magazine covering all things folk in character. The editors had published a letter chastising me for the direction my music was going. Johnny wrote the magazine back an open letter telling the editors to shut up and let me sing, that I knew what I was doing. This was before I had ever met him, and the letter meant the world to me. I've kept the magazine to this day. Of course, I knew of him before he ever heard of me. In '55 or '56, "I Walk the Line" played all summer on the radio, and it was different than anything else you had ever heard. The record sounded like a voice from the middle of the earth. It was so powerful and moving. It was profound, and so was the tone of it, every line; deep and rich, awesome and mysterious all at once. "I Walk the Line" had a monumental presence and a certain type of majesty that was humbling. Even a simple line like "I find it very, very easy to be true" can take your measure. We can remember that and see how far we fall short of it. Johnny wrote thousands of lines like that. Truly he is what the land and country is all about, the heart and soul of it personified and what it means to be here; and he said it all in plain English. I think we can have recollections of him, but we can't define him any more than we can define a fountain of truth, light and beauty. If we want to know what it means to be mortal, we need look no further than the Man in Black. Blessed with a profound imagination, he used the gift to express all the various lost causes of the human soul. This is a miraculous and humbling thing. Listen to him, and he always brings you to your senses. He rises high above all, and he'll never die or be forgotten, even by persons not born yet -- especially those persons -- and that is forever. - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2003 19:05:35 -0700 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: London Bridge amelio747 wrote: > Yeah I think it was probably one of those things she thought was good > at the time but got tired of, as I did! > I can't imagine that she ever thought it was good. It's interesting to watch, because the lyrics are so depressing and stark, yet the Lakota people in the video look very happy and are lip-synching to Joni's song. I'm not sure where this was filmed. My guess would be Wounded Knee in South Dakota as there is a picture of Mount Rushmore also in the clip. It doesn't appear that the Lakota people are offended by Joni's song. But Kate does bring up a good point. Perhaps after Joni wrote the song, she may have had second thoughts about releasing it and then later approached the Lakota people for their opinion and/or support. Joni lets the Lakota children do some of the filming too and credits them in the video. They are humble people of the delta past Crowley's ridge, of the farm lands, people of deep faith in God and country... they are people of hope. There are many who BELIEVE it, but there is a complete lack of proof of how many people have been disenfranchised. I keep hearing things like it would be a shame if felons were incorrectly purged because African-American names are disproportionately represented among felons' names. What I don't hear is "The black community says that 17,345 African-Americans have been researched and verified as incorrectly purged. We have turned over documentation to the state of Florida, every member of Congress, and the major media. We want this changed immediately." In the absence of action like that, I'm thinking it's an urban myth. After all, if it happened, the black community would mobilize the resources, alert the media, and fix it, right? This is like the fact that many people BELIEVE that Detroit knows how to get 200 miles to a gallon of gas and is withholding it. Because lots of people believe an urban myth does not make it fact. Lama I'm not picking on Kate this week, but she said, >> At any given time most states will be purging felons from the voting rolls in an election...do you really think it is possible in Florida to have screwed up that astoundingly?< there are many who believe that innocent people were intentionally purged from the roles...i don't know how to quickly find this the post from the archives but i remember julius giving a pretty good explanation of this... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Oct 2003 20:35:50 -0400 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: FW: "Lakota", the story behind the song... Lama - -----Original Message----- From: Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu Sent: Friday, October 03, 2003 10:30 PM To: _JMDL Subject: "Lakota", the story behind the song... About "Lakota", Joni said, >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I have a friend who is a Macatek Indian. His name is Federico. He owned a shop down the street from where we were recording in Santa Monica. I went in to see him one afternoon before going to work on this song and he told me there was an Indian artifact show at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium opening at 5 o'clock that afternoon. He said, "There's gonna be some great stuff there like hummingbird baskets." Hummingbird and eagle feathers are illegal now, like elephant ivory, and would have to be sold under the counter. Federico said I should go early and meet him there because he knew the merchants and they would show me those rare old things. So, at 4 o'clock, I told Shipley and Klein, "I want to leave for an hour," and Klein said, "Joan-Joan, we need you here!" In all my recording career, this is the only time I can recall that I was in the studio and wanted to be someplace else. I told them I would only be gone for an hour. Again they protested. Just then the machines went down and I said, "Okay! Down time!" and I borrowed ten dollars and a watch and promised to be back in an hour. I left. Inside the Santa Monica Civic, this woman came up to me, stuck a 16mm (film) camera in my face and asked, "What are you here for?" I looked into the lens and said, "I'm here to look at the artifacts and I can't stay very long." She asked, still filming, "Do you know Iron Eyes Cody?" I said, "No." "Would you like to meet him?" "Okay," I say. Up comes Iron Eyes Cody wearing a grey braided wig (he'd gone bald) tied like a bonnet under his chin. He had on gobs of turquoise. I say to him, "Do you know any Indian songs?" And he says, "Well yes, I know a few." And I say, "Would you sing me on?" Now we're standing in the aisle of this Indian show, he tilts back his head and goes, "Hey-ya-ho-ho, hey-ya-ho, hey-ya-ho, hey-ya, hey-ya," and I'm delighted. Now I say to him, "What are you doing right now?" And he says, "Well I'm going to dinner with some people at 9 o'clock." I say, "I'm recording nearby. It's a song about the Lakota and the Black Hills. Would you come and sing on it?" And he says, "You want me to overdub?" So I come back to the studio. I'm 20 minutes late. I come back with four Indians and a film crew. The machine is still down, but Klein and Shipley give me the stink-eye anyway, like I broke my promise. They finally fix the machine and we play back "Lakota" for Iron Eyes. He listens with his eyes closed and when it's over, he says, "Oh, it's got the haunting! I think you're turning Indian! You want me to overdub?" So, Iron Eyes Cody overdubs his beautiful song. He has just finished when we hear this clap of thunder. He and I rush to the back door and standing on the back steps, we see coming down the telephone wire - a golden ball of lightning - riding on the lines and its coming straight at the building. I run into the studio and yell, "Get the tapes off the heads!" That electrical storm was only in Santa Monica - nowhere else in L.A. I'd never seen ball lightning before. I haven't seen it since." >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lama ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Oct 2003 20:43:53 -0400 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: My weekend njc Last night: Emmylou Harris Nickel Creek Tonight: Shawn Colvin Dar Williams Mary Chapin Carpenter & Patty Griffin Costs: Free admission since the boss gave us all pins, $2 round-trip transportation per day.
