You become a non-citizen, like in the old Soviet Union. >This is not the case in most other states; it's an uncivilized vestige of the Deep >South. Does this not make it sound to the unfinformed reader from another country that Florida is unique in banning felons from voting? It is horribly slanted and does not contain all the true information regarding other states. I know for a fact that *most* states ban felons from voting and it doesn't matter to which degree, whether still in prison, on parole, forever, etc. The Palast article does not make those distinctions and gives the impression that Florida is almost alone in purging felons from the voting rolls due to as they say some "uncivilized vestige of the Deep South." This is so inflammatory and hateful. It is not true. The Washington Post is not some fringe newspaper - their article made sense to me. Bottom line is you cannot arbitrarily single one state out for your argumentative purposes when most (47) other states also prohibit felons from voting (and would purge them from the voting rolls) to one degree or another. In addition that law requires that an applicant to college without lawful immigration status must: "File an affidavit with the college or university stating that the student has applied for a lawful immigration status or will apply as soon as the student is eligible to do so." http://www.ilrc.org/ab540faq.html I don't have much of a problem with them attending CA colleges and paying in-state tuition, even though financially it creates another deficit because their parents have not paid most taxes into the system. What I was concerned about was talk of paying completely for their university educations. As for legal residents from other states setting up residency in CA to get cheaper tuition, that doesn't bother me, either, because I've always thought all the states have this rule so it's kind of a reciprocal situation. Everyone is paying into the big pot (Federal) and into their individual pots (State). So maybe someone from AZ comes to CA and gets in-state tuition. So then someone from CA goes to AZ and gets in-state tuition. It evens out to some extent and all these schools get some Federal funds, which come from Federal taxes. > absolutely it would be best for parents to become legalized...(i'm not sure > of the details of how long this takes or how difficult it is these days Pres. Reagan in the 1980s granted them amnesty and gave them citizenship. The current Pres. Bush was advocating doing the same until 9/11 hit.
