It's good to hear it again. Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark And Hilldale, The Good Humor Man He Sees Everything Like This - dig those wacky titles Arthur! Anyway, listening to Bummer In The Summer, I thought "my god, this is rapping!" The genealogy of rap has been much discussed, of course. One route is from Jamaican toasting, through dance hall and so on; then there are The Last Poets and Gil Scott Heron, who are often described as proto rappers; I'm fairly sure that Forever Changes (which appeared in 1968) predates Gil Scott Heron, though I know next to nothing about The Last Poets. And then again there are the "talking blues" which Bob Dylan used to go in for a lot, which some have likened to rapping. The extraordinary thing about Bummer In The Summer is how damn contemporary it sounds - Arthur's delivery has a looseness and feel for the rhythm which would be right on the money if made today - and of course with the never-ending and increasingly adventurous sampling on hip hop records, someone could listen to Bummer In The Summer and think "hey, I like that sampled backing track, sounds like it's from some old 60s record!" It always amazes me how Joni had so much wisdom at such a young age to write 'Both Sides Now' (I've always loved her version the most). I feel that this song is not all to specific though unlike 'Nothing Can Be Done'. I feel this is a big reason it has been covered so much - anyone can relate to 'Both Sides Now'. Also you said I was using her age as a filter - well as we know a lot of her music is confessional/biographical and I feel 'Nothing Can Be Done' is one of them. Like you said 'The Circle Game' was a reply to Neil Young and I remember the idea for 'Both Sides Now' came from a book. No, though I think 'Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody should have been a hit! According to this book I have it was released in the UK Feb 83 on 7" with 'Ladies Man' as the b-side and never charted! It was never put out in the states but 'Be Cool' was in the same month with 'Underneath The Streetlight' as the b-side and also never charted - this one was not put out in the UK. There were no more singles from WTRF. I guess she put 'Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody on HITS 'cos she thought it should have been a hit too. More Joni chart trivia! Janet Jackson's song sampling Joni actually charted higher (# 8 I think) than 'Big Yellow Taxi' - in the UK. Also the live version of 'Big Yellow Taxi' from MOI charted much higher (# 24) than the LOTC version (# 67) in the states where as the live version didn't even chart in the UK singles chart just like any other Joni single apart from the original version of 'Big Yellow Taxi' (yes that does include 'Help Me') which I mentioned previously. Oh I've confused myself and feel very tongue-tied without even opening my mouth! Of course none of this is really important, just interesting. ************** Steve T amelio@sev47.fsnet.co.uk "Red is autumn green is summer Greens are turning and the sand" - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, October 08, 2003 8:47 AM Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2003 #507 - hit or miss? > Also Joni only had one hit single in the uk; 'Big Yellow Taxi' > >which didn't even make top 10 (just missed - 11) and we know she has done so > >much more. > > Really, that's surprising. The greatest living singer-songwriter had this to say about her arrangement of "A Bird That Whistles". >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This is an old folk song, slightly adapted from Dylan's version (, missing) regenderized so I could sing it. Klein and I just jammed it up for the fun. We only took up three tracks so there were lots left over for Wayne and birds. We had a tree in our backyard at the beach that was always full of birds. Birds of a feather aren't supposed to flock together but our tree defied this natural law. It was a regular bird Babylon. We rand a cord (sic) out into the yard and recorded the "bird babble" and we had it in our files. When Wayne came into the session, the only instruction I gave hime was, "You are the bird." He's the only musician that I ever played with that could take metaphorical instruction. Wayne plays pictures. I wish more people could see / hear them and delight in them that way I do. He is indispensible to my music. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lama, the lead out groove of side one of RAM by some former Cricket or something. Kenny B ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Oct 2003 23:25:06 -0400 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: liner notes for NIGHT RIDE HOME Joni said, >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> There was a television show in England, an offshoot of Sesame Street designed to introduce a wide variety of music to children. It was called "The Ghost Of Faffner Hall." Faffener Hall was an old house and the ghost was an old woman who'd obviously died. She had left her house to her nephew, who was an Oil Can Harry type character, complete with a thin, waxed mustache and a villianous and mercenary nature. As the new owner, he was intent on tearing down the house for personal profit. In this house lived an assortment of characters - the mad impresario, a ruddy-faced, blond puppet who loved a wide variety of music - from Beethoven to the musical saw. In the basement lived a couple of punk-rocker puppets and then, of course, you had the ghost who haunted the house. The show was a set-up to feature a variety of guests ranging from Dizzy Gillespie to opera singers to me! (That's exactly as it's printed in the booklet. The entire sentence is free of commas.) They created an episode where the mad impresario gets a letter from an old sweetheart - Joni Mitchell - who is coming to visit him. The letter finds him as he is searching for the world's greatest sound. So he's banging on everything - listening to wooden sounds and metal sounds and glass sounds with rapture. The scene between the impresario and me takes place in a pink Cadillac by moonlight. Prior to taping the we recorded "Night Ride Home" and we did it quickly without the unnecessary pressure of mixing and remixing. Thank God we had that mix because one night, our second engineer accidently put the machine into "record" when she was setting up the tones. It was the first track on the master and it got wiped out! It was the only track we had a mix on so we got lucky. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I'll bet Rose is wondering if the pink Cadillac had crushed velvet seats and long black doors. I'm wondering what the story about "The Ghost Of Faffner Hall" had to do with the tape story? I think Norma needs an editor. Hmmmm.... I remove each page from the binder before I start typing now.
