There was no brawl, but there was at least one person who was outspoken about not really liking it from the beginning. (Hi, Ric!) I have gone back and forth on T'log, and have decided to hold off on judging whether it is good or bad. (I like Joni's current voice, so that's not an issue.) What T'log *is* is dark. It is very much -- from packaging to musical content -- a product of Joni's post-9/11 frame of mind, I think, and I can't take too much of that right now without going into an end-of-summer, pre-holiday funk. I'm pretty sure 'Blowin' Away' and 'Honest Lullabye' were on A&M as well and they both came after 'Gulf Winds'. Wonder if they're included as well? I have most of Joan's A&M recordings on cd but some of them might be worth getting remasters of. I know the sound on some of the cds I have is not particularly good (Honest Lullabye is particularly bad). I once heard a half-speed master of 'Diamonds and Rust' on vinyl and salivated for the day it would come out on cd. I was very disappointed. Well I'm off to Costco! Wish me luck! Mark PS: I'm thinking the 5 studio albums would be: Come From the Shadows Diamonds and Rust Gulf Winds Blowin' Away Honest Lullabye and the live recording has to be 'From Every Stage'. But I know that at least 'Honest Lullabye' was released after 1976. Probably just more mis-information from those half-wits at All Music Guide ;-) Joan's box set released the same day as Joni's. Includes much of her best work, I think. Does not include Blowin' Away and Honest Lullabye (wow, what a beautiful album) because those weren't on A&M, they were on Portrait, a division of Epic/Columbia (which later become Sony). Both of those albums were later re-released (in the 90s) on a small label called Guardian, which released several of Joan's new and older albums. I think that label is out of business but I'm not sure. I think the cds included are: Come from the Shadows Where are You Now My Son Gracias a la Vida Diamonds & Rust From Every Stage Gulf Winds I also love Gulf Winds, a lovely collection of songs penned by Joan. The live album is a gem. I've been talking to Paz about another source that he found that will duplicate the DVD's for less money than the company I was dealing with. I am still trying to figure some things out like the cost of duplicating just one set (expensive at the moment) so we can have it for the rest of the duplication. As you can imagine, this is a little more complicated as 1) I will (hopefully!) be offering refunds of the price difference to those that ordered DVD's (or you can donate the difference to the scholarship fund, put it towards next year's Jonifest deposit, etc.) 2) People will have the opportunity of changing their video orders to DVD orders 3) I will also take additional orders from anyone that didn't have a chance to order them from the original deadline I deeply apologize to everyone that has already placed orders and will need to wait a bit longer. I will get back to everyone as soon as I know anything. So, please just sit tight for now. Also, since we have this great opportunity to duplicate DVD's at a reasonable cost, how many people would be interested in the Jonifest 2002 videos/DVD's that were never released? If there is sufficient interest, I will make an effort to Master those as well for this project. **Please e-mail me at *this* address if you are interested in the 2002 videos/DVD's. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Sep 2003 22:42:00 EDT From: OzWoman321@aol.com Subject: NJC - In My Heaven (Mary Chapin Carpenter) Hello, All - Catherine asked (as a result of Bryan's post): > --- BRYAN8847@aol.com wrote: >Came across this when > cruising the web tonight - Dar > >Wiliams, Mary Chapin > >Carpenter, Emmylou Harris, Shawn Colvin, Patty > >Griffin and Lucinda Williams will > >perform at the Tall Stacks festival in Cincinnati > >October 15-19. Between yesterday and today, I listened to 75 songs from Emmylou's boxset "Portraits" and the CD "Spyboy". Now, I can understand how one could fall in love with her voice (though I wish she would use more of it straight up, and hide it less behind the harmonies). And like Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, who trio with her on several cuts (and like Joni, and Bruce Springsteen, for that matter), there is more than a little appeal to her 'whole package' - I mean this sincerely, not in any derogatory way. And I realize that she wrote very few of the 75 songs (she had a hand in writing no more than ten of the 75). But she got to pick the songs she covered. She tapped a lot of songwriters - including Gram Parsons, Lennon/McCartney, Delbert McClinton, Chuck Berry, Dolly Parton, Robbie Robertson, Don McClean, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Richard Thompson, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Spector, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Stephen Foster, Bob Dylan, Tom Rush, Roy Orbison, Townes Van Zandt (and others). Yet despite that, I found the songwriting truly paled by comparison to even a random sample of Joni's - for example, take her 200 or so songs, put 'em on a dartboard, and fire off 75 of them. And I'm just talking about the music - forget about the lyrical comparisons. And I really like quite a number of the songs - heck, I picked The Boxer for the song circle at the fest. Will an Emmylou fan out there please give me a list of what they think the really good songs on this box set include, so I can pay even harder attention to them the next time I listen to these albums ? (I already know and like Here, There and Everywhere, Evangeline, Save the Last Dance for Me, Mr. Sandman, And I Love You So, The Boxer, Millworker, To Know Him is to Love Him and Hard Times. That's 9 out of 61. Can we get me up to 25 (that would be batting .400 or so on really good songs). Now I know these are pretty much all considered good songs - she doesn't have to cover lousy songs, after all. I'm looking for really good. What I'm saying is not just that I'm spoiled. I'm saying Joni sort of ruined listening to popular music for me. Darn her. Her work is just so superior. By the way, did Kristofferson ever sue Dolly Parton for "To Daddy" - I mean, isn't that verse note for note the same as "Me and Bobby Mcghee" ? Shameless ! Anyway, after the Emmylou marathon, I watched the Let's Sing Out tape, then the WOHAM DVD (kudos to Susan Lacy for a truly artistic, sensitive and passionate job of producing and editing that show - the videos of Blue, Dog Eat Dog and Raised on Robbery were especially great on the music end, and the bonus interview snippets were impressive, also, and Joni enhanced her image on them, IMO) and finally the Shadows and Light DVD (and kudos to Joni for producing such an artistic piece so early in the 'video' era). No need to print out the setlist from those 3 collections. Stunning. I even have an earworm for I Was Born to Take the Highway - one of her 'baby' songs :-) Sorry to go on like this. There has been some complaining over tha past few days - much of it meritorious, no doubt - about the new 'box set' et al. But for the pleasure Joni's given me over the years - including that of admiring her and her work - she can have her way with me any time (and I'll try my best never to complain). Bobsart PS - By way of comparison, I enjoyed listening to Bob Muller's two "Sweet Sixteen" covers CD's more than I did Portraits - a tribute to Joni's songwriting, IMO. And of those covers, very few were 'better' overall performances than Joni's own on her records - a tribute to her arranging, producing and performing talents. She is really something (in case any of you all out there in the choir hadn't noticed) ;-) ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2003 #490 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
