I had woken up feelign very nasueiois, soaked in sweat and in a great deal of pain in my chest, shoulders andarms. John called the paramedics. It turned out i knew on of the paramedics from dog club, which made me feel more secure. anywa, i was immediately put on the ecg machine and taken off to hospitla where i was out on oxygen and another ecg machine. all my readings were normal. the consultant said i have definately gota disc problem in my neck and that accoutns for the pian. a few hours later i was released. However, that wasn't the end. I got sicker, extreme nausea, more sweating, i felt like i was dying. By Sunday morning John had called the doctore ebcause he said i was talking to the JMDL and telling him to be quiet because you lot were all talkign at once and i needed quiet to hear properly. I havenot been near the pc till just now). I was clearly not on this planet. This is very weird: Ashara and Kate were stood together and they were joined by a huge ring that went thru their breasts. No one seemd to think this was odd, not veen me, at the time. Anyway, it was not a temprature that caused this bu dehydration. I had been drifiting in and out of sleep but could not stay asleep because of all the jmdl chatter and when there wasn't any, i seemd to be retracing our tour of France. Madness brough on by dehydration is not funny-it felt awful and part of me was are somehting wasn't right and made me rather scared. Today is the first day I have started to feel okay agin but still crap. I think i spoke with Lucy and some point but not sure when but am failry sure i did and don't think juts think i did. I had hundreds of mails when i logged on and have deleted them all-can't deal with them. so if you are expecting an ansswwer you now know why you ahven't andif anyne had a birthday, hope it was a good one. - -- bw colin http://www.btinternet.com/~tantraapso/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 11:15:11 +0100 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: Who Are You, njc Better late than never, so here it is: 1. Yes, but for the most part that task has already been done with the "Second Fret Sets" compilations...although there are some ommissions there. She did released UFG as the B-side to "You Turn Me On I'm A Radio", so it was available prior to Hits. And there would be some live versions of songs that should be included; the versions of My Old Man, All I Want, Case of You, For Free that feature different lyrics should be there. > > Even if you don't do that (which I think you should - hint, hint), could you > compile a set list for our inspection ? I guess there's two "box set" discussions...one of which would be a boxset of the stuff that's already in circulation, the other would be the set of stuff that's not in circulation or at least not readily available at our level. The latter collection should include the alternate Mingus recordings and other demos, unreleased things that we don't know about. The former is one that I could assemble, I suppose, hypothetically at least. I'll look through my collection and see what I would theoretically put together. > > Also, is there a list of songs that Joni is known to have > written and > performed but with no known recordings in circulations ? And the good news - NO new BSN's! And in the mail when I got home yesterday, a jazz vocal recording of "Song For Sharon". Whoo-Hoo, Hejira covers make me SO happy. ICE Magazine has this blurb about the box: Joni Mitchell's The Complete Geffen Recordings (September 23) box set enshrines, on four separate discs, the Canadian empress's four label releases - 1982's Wild Things Run Fast, which reflected her growing interest in jazz music; Dog Eat Dog, her political-awakening album; Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm, featuring a stellar guest roster including Willie Nelson, Peter Gabriel, Don Henley, Tom Petty and Billy Idol; and 1991's Night Ride Home, her final Geffen release that served as the artistic stepping stone to her next album, Turbulent Indigo. An unreleased piano-and-vocal version of "Good Friends" accompanies Dog Eat Dog, while a previously unheard demo version of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" enriches Night Ride Home. As compilation producer Mike Ragogna explains to ICE, "We hardly did any remastering. In fact, these are basically flat transfers of the albums, since we found them in such good shape. We had the original master tapes, which have only been used once - when Mobile Fidelity licensed the Wild Things Run Fast album. Otherwise, these masters have never been touched." A candid introductory note by Mitchell, her insightful liner notes (where she individually addresses 90% of the tracks) and rare photos from the Dog Eat Dog and Night Ride Home sessions - all housed within an 88-page booklet - fill out the collection. http://www.icemagazine.com/cubes/cubes_198.shtm#joni > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-joni@jmdl.com [mailto:owner-joni@jmdl.com]On Behalf Of > Catherine McKay > Sent: Monday, September 22, 2003 10:12 PM > To: SCJoniGuy@aol.com; joni@smoe.org > Subject: Re: "Complete Geffen Recordings", Due Tuesday! > > > --- SCJoniGuy@aol.com wrote: > me why I'm supposed to be > > > > > Two words...bonus tracks! > > There's how many... two? WTRF reflected her running like a wild thing AWAY from jazz music after the commercial failure of Mingus. She recruited a cracker-jack troupe of rock and rollers to back her up. Sure, she may have gotten some jazzers to contribute (Shorter, Larry Carlton, Victor Feldman), and some of these melodies have been re-interpreted in a jazzier style, but I don't think Joni was thinking "Ooh, let's explore jazz further" with WTRF. Absolutely, Bob. There are cuts on WTRF that are wonderful: my favorites are "Chinese Cafe" and Moon at the Window," but she is running away from jazz. The big problem with _Mingus_ is that it pales compared to actual Mingus in his prime. And I find the lyrics to "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" kind of embarrassing, to tell you the truth. Then, after WTRF, we get Joni experimenting & I think floundering for the most part, Thomas Dolby stuff, weird guest stars like Billy Idol. And her politics become less and less nuanced. (This lack of nuance carries over into "Sex Kills" later on _Turbulent Indigo_, esp. compared to the magnificent "Magdalene Laundries.") Of course _Night Ride Home_ has many wonderful moments, including political ones on the recently discussed "Passion Play." The floundering may just be a necessary step for an artist to make good art again. I wondered with the "no need to remaster" remarks, "who needs this box?" But there is that 88 page booklet with candid Joni commentary . . . > -----Original Message----- > From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com [mailto:SCJoniGuy@aol.com] > Sent: Tuesday, September 23, 2003 2:45 PM > To: rflynn@frontiernet.net; joni@smoe.org > Subject: Re: "Complete Geffen Recordings", Due Tuesday! > > > > 1982's Wild Things Run Fast, which reflected her growing > > interest > > in jazz music; > > Say WHAT? > > WTRF reflected her running like a wild thing AWAY from jazz > music after the commercial failure of Mingus. It's "Two Grey Rooms" the dipthong mix, and "Baby Blue" is almost exactly the same chord progression as NRH's title track, but still pretty cool. One can easily see that there's absolutely no way both tracks could've been included on the same release (they're almost identical...it's amazing the way she 'joni-izes' it compared to, let's say, Judy Collins' beautiful early 90's version...). "Good Friends" is the winner of the lot (I had a feeling). As the track ended, I found myself saying aloud "They should've left these just the way they were." Between this demo and the 3 piano/vocal tracks on Rock's Master Class (1985), you can get a real feel for what could've been a stellar JM album. Oh well, I guess we're lucky to even have those 4. The lyrics and phrasings on the GF demo are different - "Synchronized & Vital" as opposed to "Synchronized Like Magic". I'll be rotating it heavy for a while. - -Chris ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2003 #481 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
