I think it is very messy, but the choice to vote to recall a governor is the peoples' right by law in California going back to around 1911. The latest poll says 70% of Californians want the recall election to proceed. That sounds like a majority consensus to me, especially noteworthy in a state where the majority of the voters are from Davis's party. It's democracy in action. I also agree it is a circus sideshow, but it is lively and I think it is a way of people venting their frustrations. California is in very deep trouble, and just how badly few people could even imagine. The ruling by the 9th circuit was putrid, IMO. You sit down at your PC, staring at the screen. Perhaps you type in Joni Mitchell in your search engine, just for fun, to see what might pop up. Then you notice there are two web sites, and as you read through the offerings, you see that there's a discussion list. You might hold off for a day or two, knowing that there's a lot of weirdness on the internet, so you wait. And then you realize that all you are doing is thinking about that list, wondering, and then you decide, okay, I can always join and watch for a while, not say a word, no one will know you are even there. Curiosity. That wild animal. Sometimes gets the best of you. And all of a sudden you see...hey, there are people who think just like I do .. and hey, this isnt just about Joni. And at the same time, there's such a wealth of knowledge surrounding all things Joni, and you are completely blown away. And then you notice that people seem to know one another, and then you see that there are gatherings of the Joni kind around the globe. And that there's this big one that takes place each year in the North Eastern US. A lot of people seem to be drawn to the centre of that one, and you wonder what that's all about. And then you decide to check it out, just this once, and you realize what all the fuss is about. And you begin friendships, not just any old friendship, but the kind of friendships where people love and accept you for who you are, warts and all. A place of love, trust and acceptance for your talents. Maybe you've never had the nerve to stand up on stage before, let alone sing or play your guitar..and suddenly, there you are, blinded by the lights, trying to see out into the blackness of an audience that you know is there because they are breathing, quiet, waiting for you to begin. And the most amazing thing is, if you are scared to death up there, the audience loves you even more, clapping, cheering you on, saying it's okay, we're here with you...for you...because of you. You go home, back to "reality" and you think to yourself...did that weekend really happen? How is this possible?? And you smile, knowing that next year, you'll be back. So then tragedy strikes and you feel suddenly alone. And then you realize that you've got this mass of friends out there who DO care about you, and whatever life brings you, good and bad. So you try an email or two and nothing feels right and then you let go and pour your heart out and tell your Joni friends that your best and most beloved brother Dave died suddenly at the age of 53. You hit the send button. At first, there's silence, and you think...oh no...I shouldn't have revealed so much about my personal life. Wish I could take it back...too late. Sink. And then, for the next several hours and days and weeks to come, your email box is inundated with mail, hundreds of mails in fact, offering whatever I need. I dont know how to ask for what I need, and I mention to Ashara that this trip up to Canada to attend my brother's funeral is putting a huge strain on us financially. And she puts out a call to the community, to the people who love Joni, and then I open up a card from her today and am completely knocked off my feet. I cannot believe the generosity of this wonderful group of people. I have no idea who donated what, that's not really the point. The point is, that the people who could, did. And both Brian and I are completely moved to the core by this act of incredible act of generosity. my reality: On August 19th, my dearest brother Dave died suddenly. I felt and at many times during the day continue to feel as though Ive been broad sided by a Mack truck. He was only 53 and this was totally out of left field. Complications all round have made this even more difficult. Im still in shock, Im sure of it because sometimes I dont feel a thing. All that said, I want to take the time to express my deepest, most heartfelt gratitude to you, the Joni community, for all of the phone calls, emails, reaching out in so many ways to help me through this sad time. I even heard from people I havent met! Every ounce of condolences has helped tremendously. The depth to which I love my brother has been made even clearer to me as I navigated these rough waters. I ache for him terribly. The past few weeks have been complicated by moving through INS red tape to get back into the US, and a number of other road blocks. Losing Dave. It is a grief that Ive never experienced before and one that I dont wish on anyone. It is excruciatingly painful . and yet...Ive been graced with so much support, I feel like Im beginning to move through it, even a little all because of the people who love Joni. with love and appreciation beyond any words I can write, Mags and Brian. Thanks for admitting it first. I've tried reading the stuff that's published in the New Yorker and so on, and those are short poems, and I can't even stay awake for those. Oh, but I try, Lord knows, I try! (I even used to write the stuff, but I always fell asleep before I could finish them.) ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Sep 2003 19:56:09 -0700 From: "kakki" Subject: Re: California stuff (njc) Kate wrote: > sure its law, but is it democracy? perhaps it is but the way this recall > election came to be is a pretty sorry example of democracy in action, imo The law was enacted early in the 20th century to give the people recourse in kicking out corrupt officials. I think it is a very good safeguard for democracy. > i don't believe a poll proves much as its just a sampling (of > who?)...calling it majority consensus is a stretch... The recall movement got over 2 million signatures endorsing it. I heard 7 million voted in the election for governor and Davis won by a 5% margin. If you do the math alone you can see there is a consensus. Let me say I am not inclined toward drastic measures such as a recall and I did not in any way work to have this happen nor did I in any way endorse it. Interestingly, two of my friends who are registered Democrats went out door to door to get people to sign the petition to recall Davis. > i too am enjoying the absurdity of it all...as to why california is in > trouble well that is a whole nuther discussion that i will not get into... If you think it is because of the "energy crisis" alone, that is just the mere tip of the iceberg. > but i will say this, it is very frustrating to be working so hard to just > keep music & other good programs in our local public schools (due to budget > cuts) when so much money is being wasted in foreign lands... But we are not wholly dependent on Federal funds - we are set up to run a state tax based on people in the state being taxed for local programs. I really don't want to get into it because people here will just get bored or irritated, but Davis could have paid more attention a long time ago to peoples' concerns. He didn't take the recall seriously using the old canard of a "vast right wing conspiracy" when many in his own party were and are alarmed by his incompetence. The bills he is shoving through the legislature in the past few months and weeks are beyond the pale. He is all about special interests and being bought off. I don't say this lightly. I would rather have some kind of respect for my governor, regardless of political party. I love my state and have been proud of it for many years. But just what I personally have seen from having researched legislative history in just specific areas in the past year would blow yours and anyone's mind. It's beyond party, Kate. It's really bad news for everyone in California. That's not the ultimate point, however, The majority want a chance to vote on recall and that legal choice should not be denied by incompetent politically biased judges (the most overturned court district in the U.S. - 9 out of 10 decisions reversed) regardless of the outcome. I'm on this pop music kick, and there are not that many currently active in the top echelon of that genre. They do a cover of Gregg Alexander's (New Radicals) Someday We'll Know on their latest album, which I would like to get. Absolutely infectious song. Great pop music, I feel, isn't given the consideration it deserves much of the time. I know there was a thread here awhile back about the relative difficulty in writing really good pop songs. I contend it is a rare skill indeed.
