Why would a singer..who lost me after 'Horses'..do this?..( I saw a live version of this.....I kept thinking Mick Jagger?) would she not be better off with..say.."My Way"? or a Janet Jackson number? When I was younger...I did like 'Lucky numbers' by Lena Lovitch and 'Money' by the Flying Lizards/ Anne Lennox and these would stay in my head for days. On TV was 'O Superman' by Loni Anderson..I would hum that to death......"American planes....made in America" I showed this to my kids......I think it may have lost some impact?.. I better hide those Phillip Glass records!...oh I did...in the bin......hee tee!! and we now have 'Australian Idol' (you lot had American Idol) and guess? these would be superstars..do all that 60's stuff..but no Joni! I hope the man/woman wins!! Explain..... One Entrant..Courtney..... he sang as a man..but did not win....so entered as a woman and is doing quite well... his/her 'bits' are female on top and male down below..all very confusing to me! but as a woman..mmmmm not bad! Will Joni ever tour Oz? Fleetwood Mac are coming here next year..boo hoo no Christine McVie! I saw Stevie Nicks here in late 80's...she had just joined Tom Petty (Don't go draggin etc...) on stage..we all thought she was drunk! then she did this concert in Brisbane...and it was awful!...crying and hugging..mainly with the women singers.. next day she flies out to the states and goes to somewhere called the Betty Ford? But I have seen Fleetwood Mac in the UK a few times and they were brilliant and yes I loved the Buckingham/Nicks record (okay I bought it at 1st for the cover..as I did for Pattie Smith) but I would do my 'air guitar' to 'Rumours'...sad! I met Wendy Woo of the Plasmatics once...sigh...and with clothes on! and have any of you just based your entire record collection on one song from a group/singer? I did with Genesis. I saw them in 1970 and heard 'One Eyed Hound'...then followed them thru till 'Lamb lies Down' ..when Gabriel leaves..I did like 'Trick of the Tail'...and bought all the solo stuff ( I went to all the ex members concerts till 1985, i.e. Philips, Hackett, Gabriel etc..even Phil Collins Brand X) and even when there were 3, I continued to buy...I count at the moment 120 Lps/cassettes/CDs I have of the Genesis family...Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel and Womad and soooooon Peter Gabriel and Joni....yes I also bought that awful album 'World War 2' and all that..people doing Beatle covers as Peter was on that. This includes all the best of stuff......I was lucky, as a lot came from bargain bins and garage sales and to be honest..I only really loved the 1st 3 records! so maybe I should have stopped there and saved time and money???? and Kate Bush...I loved everything of hers....even Red Shoes!! but in my weekly mooch thru 2nd hand music stores...I aint come across any Joni!! Dolly, Kenny, Linda Ronstadt (sp), Carly, Joan Biez, Buffy St. Marie etc..but no Joni.....I came across a damp and scratched 'Last Waltz' with only one record...so are there a lot of secret Joni Fans, keeping hold of their treasures? I do check out Ebay..I loved the Joni wall light switch!!! and is MP3 legal and can one download Joni on it?......just asking, as my 14 year old is on Kazaa! No, it's not legal to download Joni from Kazaa, but yes there are some Joni tracks there. There are also some songs attributed to Joni that are not Joni tracks..."One Tin Soldier" being the most infamous. You mean THIS song? http://bertc.com/dropkick.htm LOL ... it was released in the U.S. around 1977. Hi Mike, I have never heard of any Palestinian terrorists giving advance warning before blowing themselves up in a crowded place, have you? I did however hear about the jewish "terrorist" movement calling the King David Hotel circa 1947 to warn of a bomb explosion hours ahead. So how can you compare the 2 approaches? Without commenting on the merits of Israel's decision, on the method itself I think that at least Arafat knows what to expect if he doesn't leave voluntarily. You are aware no doubt that Israelis could have killed Arafat hundreds of times over the years if they had wanted to. Now they are upfront about it. That's more than I can say about any government in the world who decides to eliminate someone. In general, I feel that Israelis are held to a much higher standard by the rest of the world and by themselves as well than their opponents. And I know you disagree on this double standards issue. Yes you surely have read some Israeli "new historians" who write about the moral decay of the country. For one thing, these writers represent a minuscule percentage of israeli opinion, yet they get much publicity from the foreign press. At any rate, I'm yet to read any criticism from Palestinians about their acts. Perhaps those who think that way are afraid to voice their opinion, don't you think? But you did hit a nerve as I'm very warped and depraved when it comes to Barbies. It all started when I was in the 3rd grade and my older sister would put on "Barbie strip shows" for me & my pals ...she'd put about 3-4 different outfits on her Barbie and play some music (probably NOT Joni but I don't remember) while Barbie would peel off a layer or two and dance around. So Lucy, I guess "Stripper Barbie" was my favorite. Then as if THAT wasn't bad enough, my younger sister got one of those giant Barbie heads one year for Christmas...no body, just the head with a ton of hair and I suppose you were supposed to play makeup and do hairstyles or something. I never did anything inappropriate with this life-size Barbie head, but I remember it looking at me, with those lips, and it all contributed to my eventual Barbie-induced warpage. Yes, this CD is so incredibly sweet! 'Blue' is definitely a gem. And just when I had grown tired of 'Both Sides Now' along comes a singer named Terry Gonga who brought the song back to life for me! One of the best covers I've ever heard! I just finished watching the 'Let's Sing Out' video. What a treasure! Joni is so young and beautiful.. and her facial expressions while singing are still the same ones that she uses today. I guess I don't know what I'm saying here, except that she is still the same beautiful person now that she was back then. There was another group on the video who performed 'Get Together.' I really liked their rendition, and it somehow reminded me of Joni's 'This Flight Tonight.' Instead of singing "try to love one another, right now," they sang "try to love one another, yeah, yeah," which immediately made me think of Joni's line "you got the loving that I like, all right." Something about the "yeah yeah's" and the "all rights" seemed so similar to each other. Combined with the fast strumming also made 'This Flight Tonight' come to my mind. Is my mind going? Or is it just late? Thanks to Bob for the CD's and video.... and to Simon, and everyone else who may have been behind the scenes on these projects. Bob NP: XTC, "The Wheel & The Maypole" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Sep 2003 15:34:12 -0700 (PDT) From: Ed Beauchamp Subject: Cure for String Breakage? njc Fellow guitarists, If you have a problem with string breakage when retuning, try this tip I learned a few years ago. Take a sideways look at your tuning pegs. See where the shaft comes out of the headstock? See how the shaft is wide, then narrows down in a kind of "U" shape toward the free end? Usually, when you restring, you thread the string through the hole, then wind the string around the shaft 2 or 3 times. These windings usually end up in that u-shaped part of the shaft. Now, the next time you restring, allow a lot more slack after threading the string through the hole. You want to allow enough extra string to get 10 or 12 windings around the shaft. When you do this, the first few windings will still be in the u-shaped part, but the extra windings will eventually be wound around the fattest part of the shaft, back towards the headstock. And how exactly does this help prevent string breakage, you might ask. It works like this: String breakage (when retuning)is caused by bending and unbending the string as you tighten and loosen the string, just like bending a paper clip back and forth until it breaks. (Ever notice that the string always breaks near the tuner?) When the string is only wound around the narrowest part of the shaft, the bend radius is smaller and the string flexes more. When the string is wound around the wider part of the shaft, the string flexes less and doesn't break as quickly. BTW, you really only need to do this with the 3 top strings - the 3 lowest are not as sensitive to tuning/retuning tensions. I've had other guitarists tell me that I'll have tuning problems doing this due to slippage from the excessive number of windings but I've never experienced this. I hope this description is clear - if not, email me off-list (since I'm an only-Joni digest subscriber). Since I've started restringing this way strings break much less often (they do still break eventually, just not as often). I don't have to hold my breath and turn my face away while changing tunings anymore ;-). Give it a try, and let me know if it works for you. Now if someone could only explain why the string is more apt to break when tuning down...... Ed __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I always played a classical guitar until just under a year ago when I bought this steel-string beast. The play on a classical guitar string is a lot greater - you can pull and stretch them and bend them all over the place and they still won't break. I still haven't got used to putting new strings on this guitar and I think that's half my problem - what you describe is exactly what happens when my string breaks. Here's what I came up with: 1. Grace Slick - Manhole Not an obscure performer but I think only die-hard fans are familiar with this one. It was recorded around the time when the Airplane was disintegrating but the Starship had not yet been born. Grace has always said that she was never particularly interested in being a solo performer. Her reluctance is evident on this record (there is one track that she does not perform on at all). For a long time I thought this record was a mixed bag at best and I didn't play it too terribly often (and I am a die-hard fan). However, recently I ordered the cd from Amazon and have been listening to it with new ears. Grace was in the full flower of her substance abuse and I used to think that this recording really showed the strain on her voice and on her brain. It seemed disjointed and unfocused and her singing didn't seem up to par. But now I am finding 'Manhole' to be a work of amazing creativity and originality. On the vinyl, most of the A side is a long piece of music, partly sung in Spanish and accompanied by an orchestra as well as electric guitar, bass, drums, etc. It is an impressionistic, passionate and inspirational piece about the powerful, liberating, healing & sexual energy of music (Spanish music in particular). The liner notes say that Miles Davis' 'Sketches of Spain' was part of the inspiration for this piece. The song that was the opener of the B side is a very honest confession of Grace's unfortunate tendency to be verbally inappropriate when under the influence, her awareness of that tendency, and a twinge of guilt and regret that it may have been hurtful to others: "Well it seemed like it might be the right thing to say at the time/And I know I'd say it again if you give me just a little taste more wine/I'd be flying, flying out wide and old, old as the whole world/And I'd just turn around like a baby and I'd crawl right back inside'. A rare moment of self revelation. There is also a bluesy, bawdy number called 'Better Lying Down' that Grace 'shouts' in the tradition of Bessie Smith and the album closes out with one of Paul Kantner's early mini-epics titled appropriately enough Epic (#38) that features a rousing accompaniment of bag-pipes. 2. Iris Dement - My Life If any of you saw the movie 'Songcatcher' you saw Iris Dement sitting on the front porch of a mountain cabin singing 'Pretty Saro'. Her voice and style couldn't have been more suited to the setting, the song and the part she was playing. She is also a songwriter, not in Joni's league, but nevertheless, quite a good one. Her songs are probably what you would call very down-home. Usually about family and the deep feelings that come with love and loss. Her voice is totally unique and touches the very heart and soul of everything that she sings. 3. Laura Love - Octoroon Laura Love has a powerful, agile voice that she wraps around her very unique songs. Musically this record is hard to describe. Some of it sounds like Celtic music, some of it sounds like gospel, some of it sounds like Zydeco. There are many thoughts in her writing about what it means to be different from the so-called 'norm'. She also performs a very pretty cover of Kurt Cobain's 'Come As You Are', and shows off her gospel soul on 'Blind Bartemus' and 'Amazing Grace'. She plays bass as well and is a very unique and engaging talent. 4. Lambert, Hendricks and Ross - The Swingers Most of us know 'Twisted' and 'Centerpiece'. Joni was a fan of this jazz trio who were masters of the art of vocalese. Their best known records were vocalizations of the works of Count Basie and Duke Ellington. However, their first record 'The Hottest New Group in Jazz' is a highly accesible and very enjoyable outing which features their take on Miles Davis' version of Gershwin's 'Summertime', Annie Ross singing her lyrics for Wardell Gray's 'Twisted' (of Court and Spark fame) as well as 'Centerpiece' (of 'Harry's House' fame), 'Cloudburst' and one or two other songs that may be familiar to some of the people on the JMDL. I love LH&R and in my search for more of their stuff (there is little available on cd) I discovered 'The Swingers' which, as far as I can tell, is only available as a Japanese import. Of all of their catalogue that I have managed to get my hands on, this one I think is the least conventional sounding and the most challenging. Jon Hendricks wrote most of the lyrics, putting words to pieces by Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Zoot Sims, Sonny Rollins, Oscar Pettiford and Randy Weston. There is also another one of Annie Ross' interpretations of Wardell Gray, a whimsical little song called 'Jackie'. If you like jazz vocal stylings that are not pop songs masquerading as true jazz, you will love this record. 5. Steeleye Span - Parcel of Rogues I know Ashara has heard of these guys and I'm sure others have as well. Usually people on the JMDL write about Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention when the subject turns to folk rock from the British Isles. Sandy's great but personally, I am partial to Maddy Prior and Steeleye Span. Maddy has a brighter, more focused voice than Sandy had and it is wonderfully suited for the material she sings (as was Sandy's in a different way). I chose this particular record partly because it has some prime examples of the way this group's voices could blend (the title track is a stunnig a capella example), partly because of Peter Knight's fiddle and partly because it has my favorite Maddy Prior vocalization on it, the exquisite 'The Weaver and the Factory Maid'. This gorgeous song begins with Maddy singing by herself accompanied by Knight's violin which weaves in, out and around the chorus of this lovely melody. The guitar and bass join the fiddle in a mechanical sounding accompaniment that suggests a loom or some kind of factory machinery as Maddy sings the story of the weaver who falls in love with a factory worker. To close out the thing, Maddy repeats the chorus a capella and singing three part harmony with her own voice, infusing each note with a bell-like clarity and accuracy that causes goose bumps. It is indeed a thing of beauty. Well, as usual I've gone on way longer than I needed to. I still don't know when to shut up. If you don't know these records, give em a try. You never can tell. You just might like them as much as I do.
